What are the atomic bombs
Atomic Bombs are an explosive device that derives its destructive force
from nuclear reactions, either fission or a combination of fission
and fusion reactions producing a nuclear explosion.
Who Invented The
Atomic Bombs
J. Robert Oppenheimer born on April 22,
1904, in New York City.
He was an American theoretical physicist and
director of the Manhattan Project's Los
Alamos Laboratory during World War II. He is
often called the "father of the atomic bomb".
J. Robert Oppenheimer died on February 18,
1967 (aged 62)
The Two Types of
Atomic Bombs
Fission Bombs:
In fission bombs, a mass of fissile material like
enriched uranium or plutonium is forced
into supercriticality allowing an exponential
growth of nuclear chain reactions either by
shooting one piece of sub-critical material into
another (the "gun" method) or by compression of
a sub-critical sphere or cylinder of fissile material
using chemically fueled explosive lenses.
Fusion bombs (Thermonuclear bombs):
The other basic type of nuclear weapon produces
a large proportion of its energy in nuclear fusion
reactions. Thermonuclear bombs work by using
the energy of a fission bomb to compress and heat
fusion fuel.
The world's first nuclear explosion occurred on July 16, 1945.
The first test for Trinity was the code name of the first detonation of a nuclear
weapon, conducted by the United States Army at 5:29 a.m.
an atomic bomb The test was of an implosion design plutonium bomb,
nicknamed the gadget.
Little Boy was the name of the type of atomic bomb used in the bombing of
the Japanese city of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945 during World War II, making
Little Boy it the first nuclear weapon used in warfare. It exploded with an energy of
approximately 15 kilotons of TNT and caused widespread death and
Atomic Bomb destruction throughout the city. The Hiroshima bombing was the second
nuclear explosion in history, after the Trinity nuclear test.
Fat Man Atomic Bomb
Fat Man also known as Mark III was
the codename for the type of nuclear
weapon the United States detonated
over the Japanese city of Nagasaki on
9 August 1945. It was the second of
the only two nuclear weapons ever
used in warfare.
1) United States : 5,428
2) Russia : 5,977
3) France : 290
The countries 4) China : 410

Word Meanings
1) Fission: Division or splitting into two or more parts.
2) Thermonuclear: Relating to or using nuclear reactions that occur only at very high temperatures.
3) Implosion: A sudden failure or collapse of an organization or system.
4) Exponential Growth: Growth whose rate becomes ever more rapid in proportion to the growing total number or size.
5) Warfare: Engagement in or the activities involved in war or conflict.
