Foreword

In 2007 the Green Forum held an event on “Climate change, a challenge for the new Millen-
nium – Linking climate change, natural resources, livelihood and policies” and subesequently
published the inventory “Climate change in Ethiopia - Who does what? An inventory of ac-
tivities and expertise”. By that time, most organisations stated that they do not have activities
that fit into the climate change framework. Since then and especially in the last months the
landscape of organisations and institutions working on climate change related topics has
changed tremendously.

The present directory therefore aims to take stock of organisations and institutions currently
working on climate change related topics. The publication shall facilitate information ex-
change and a better coordination of actors and acitivities. The information provided in this
directory is based on a questionnaire which was distributed between September and Novem-
ber 2010. All information listed here was provided by the respective organisations and institu-
tions themselves.

The directory focuses on civil society organisations and institutions active in the field of adap-
tation to climate change. As the directory depends on the participation of actors and as the
field is dynamic and changing throughout time, there will be more organisations working on
climate change related topics which are not listed here. This particularly applies to the Wereda
or Kebele level. This publication is therefore not conclusive and can only be a first step to
map actors active in the field.

Therefore, we would like to invite organisations and institutions to support this inventory
by encouraging other organisations to participate in the survey and by sending us any
additional information or updates on activities until the end of August 2011. Interested
organisations can contact Ms. Britta Horstmann, Britta.Horstmann@die-gdi.de or Mr. Gebru
Jember, gebru_j@yahoo.com.

Area of work and specialisation of organization:

The main focus of AEPA is on awareness creation & environmental advocacy through public
debate & discussion, training & workshops. AEPA believe that planting in the mind of people
is more valuable than planting by ourselves. From the beginning AEPA select & give priority
up on the following points based on the problem assessment taken in the region implementing
area. These are urban environment & energy; forest & protected area; climate change adapta-
tion techniques; wild fire; capacity building; water and soil conservation; population & devel-
opment.

The activities are focused to minimise the target group
problem & contribute to global climate balance. The
main activities are training of target groups especially by
focusing on youth’s environmental clubs living in rural
Kebeles. The training are mostly targeting to support
food security of these groups such as training on cassava
utilization & propagation, vetiver propagation (soil &

ject will remain one year span of life. Similar activities
will continue. These activities have benefited & contrib-

Gumuz Region by Assosa Environmental Protection
Association (AEPA). The source of fund for the project
is SIDA through Sustainable Land Use Forum (SLUF)
via Forum for Environment (FfE), which is partner with
AEPA. Implementation of the Project in Benishangul
Gumuz Region that the over all facilitating and organiz-
ing the activities is by AEPA and final screening by the
regional Green Award Committee. The Benishangul
Gumuz Region President is the Patron for the regional
green award Project.
The Project implementation is first awarding about the
Green Award (GA) through different publications
(poster, brochures etc), coordinating discussion meeting
and disseminating letters signed by regional patron to
each Wereda Agriculture and Development office. Then
collecting application forms from each Wereda and
screening at regional level and giving. Finally nominat-
ing outstanding winners from each category to national
level award. Promoting the success of Green Awarded
heroes through several techniques.

The award categories are civil societies, NGOs, youth

Groups, private sectors, individuals & school environ-
mental clubs. One of the results of the project is that the
community sectors in the region begin to protect envi-
ronment especially plantation & the regional EPA plan
to support the program (Green Award).

Goal/ objective: protecting the environment in Benishangul Gumuz
would be recognized, acknowledged & expanded

year since 2006.
The main problems initiate the project are:-
- The fast deforestation in the region
- Environmental degradation especially soil erosion
- The climate change occurring in the region, the rain-
fall which was for eleven month before 30 year now
decreased to almost five month.
Problems project seeks to ad-

viduals & institutions acting against these problems
can reduce the existing problem. It is the means of

Planned activities on climate change

Currently AEPA being Partnership with related organization selected one of our implement-
ing Kebele, youth environmental club, to be benefited from the carbon sale. This Kebele is
Amba 14 youth environmental club. We made 2010 Ethiopian tree day celebration there by
planting bamboo trees & vetiver grasses on 25 hector degraded land & it is this area we ap-
point to be benefited from carbon sale. The Clean Development Mechanism: Benishangul
Gumuz Tree Planting Initiative already accept the idea & start to Support them. Such activi-
ties are in our plan & will be continued by AEPA.

Publications:
AEPA learned more when implementing these activities. Some of them are working in colla-
boration with stakeholders is saving time and money. AEPA able to implement these projects
in the region with very small amount of money due to there is positive influences and better
collaboration made with stake holders. The result of this collaboration brings more people in
the protection of environment especially plantation and conserving their soil through biologi-
cal method. It is clear that these activities contribute to world climate change adaptation.
AEPA believe & continue working in collaboration with related GOs & NGOs and become
successful.

Area of work and specialisation of organization:

The organization is mainly dealing with wetland and integrated watershed management
within a given micro watersheds. Under this main theme, in our project intervention areas
various activities have been undertaken in an integrated manner. The following are some
among others:

- Biophysical soil and water conservation through promoting Vetiver grass;

- creating or supporting alternative livelihood such as on farm activities and introducing
“Inset” (which can adopt in a wide range of agro-ecological zones) plantation to new ar-
eas;
- wood lot establishment and fuel wood saving stoves distribution to halt deforestation;
- striving to make drinking water available and accessible (water security);
- supporting sanitation and health of the rural community; intervene in environmental carry-
ing capacity and population (working on family planning and reproductive health);
- supporting “save for change” micro credit groups;
- supporting forest dependent communities in producing and improving non timber forest
products and link them with marketing outlets;
- supporting and facilitating establishment of community based organization for natural
resources management such as forest resources;
- implementing participatory forest management projects;
- engagement in payment for environmental services activities (carbon credit trading);
- implementing a project that aimed at wild coffee gene pool in-situ conservation using
PFM as a main implementing tool.

The above mentioned activities in one way or another contribute in supporting communities’
resilience towards climate change impact and also contribute in mitigating climate change.

The project shall be implemented in the selected two
eco-regions of Ethiopia (central and southern Rift Valley
lakes’ regions and south-western eco-regions). It has two
major components with which it attempts to tackle wet-
land degradation in integrated manner within watersheds
or river basin and improve the contribution of these eco-
systems for betterment of communities who are vulnera-
ble to environmental shocks. The first component of the
project deals with environmental policy advocacy and
awareness creation, which focuses on decision making

which is part of south-western eco-region. The project
aims to maintain ecosystem integrity of wetlands-
