MBA Internship Report Analysis

Here are the key steps I followed in applying the concept of vouching during my internship: 1. Obtained the cash book and supporting vouchers/receipts from Sikkim State Legal Service Authority for the year. 2. Carefully examined each voucher/receipt to understand the nature of transaction and ensure it is appropriately recorded in the cash book. 3. Matched details like date, amount, payee/payer name etc. mentioned in the voucher with the corresponding entry in the cash book. 4. Ensured all vouchers have proper approval/authorization as per the organization's policy. 5. Cross-verified arithmetic accuracy of entries in cash book by re-calculating totals.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 What is an internship?
An internships provide an opportunity for students to apply what they have learned in
institutions to practical work experiences related to their academic or career goals, in other
words it is an opportunity offered by an employer to interns, to work at a firm for a fixed
period of time. Interns are usually undergraduates or students, and most internships last
between a month and three months. It is usually part time if offered during a university
semester and full time if offered during the vacation periods. An internship would give you
practical skills, workplace experience and greater knowledge of that industry, in exchange for
employer benefiting from your labor. An internship can be either paid or voluntary. The trend
is increasingly (and rightly) towards the former, as voluntary internships are often cited as
exploitative. As you would expect, internships that pay well are usually the most competitive.

2.4 APPLICATION OF THEORIES, CONCEPTS AND SKILLS

Concept/ Theory: Golden rule of Accountings

Description: vouching
According to Spicer and Pegler, “vouching is the examination by the auditor of all
documentary evidences, which are available to support the authenticity of the transaction,
entered in the clients records”. In other words it is the only way of detecting all sorts of errors
and planned frauds. Thus, it is the backbone of auditing. We along with staff went to Sikkim
State legal Service Authority. Wherein I was instructed to see all the different vouchers &
receipts and tally them with the cash book of the year.
How the theory/ concept was applied
In each and every transaction in the cash book follow the golden rule of accounting.
Real account- debit what comes into business and credit what goes out
Personal account- debit the receiver and credit the giver
Nominal account- debit all expenses and losses, credit all incomes and gains.
Example: suppose a rent a property worth 25000. Rent is an expense and hence belongs to
nominal account. Cash is part of real account. As per the golden rule of nominal account and
real account; debit all expenses and credit what goes out. So the entries would be
Rent account Dr. 25000
To cash account Cr. 25000
Learning’s/ Insights
While going through every voucher and receipt and tallying them with the cash book, I found
that each and every transaction are in accordance to the golden rules.

Concepts/ Theory: TDS (Tax deducted at source)
Description; TDS returns and filings
Usually, the person receiving income is liable to pay income tax. But with the help of TDS
the government makes sure that income tax is deducted in advance from the payments being
made to the person. The recipient receives the net amount (after reducing TDS). The recipient
will add the gross amount to his income and the amount of TDS is adjusted against his final
tax liability.
.
TDS RETURNS
TDS return is to be submitted quarterly and various details need to be furnished like TAN,
amount of TDS deducted type of payment, PAN of deductee, etc. Also, different forms are
prescribed for filing returns depending upon the purpose of the deduction of TDS

How the theory/ concept was applied
The concept was applied by while filing TDS returns with its required forms and details

2.5 ON THE JOB LEARNINGS
Networking
During my internship, the organization working environment was very favorable where
communicating and asking for clarification was easy. Most of employees where nepali so
communicating with them was easy and made learning process a fun. Few times, I even got
chance to go for auditing which gave chance to know more about the corporate circle
What was learned?
I learned how to communicate and build relationships with the people I worked with. I
learned how to introduce myself, talk about my interests, knowledge and skills with
entrepreneurs and business owners, as well as how to ask questions and gain a better
understanding of businesses not only in the co-working space, but also others in the market.
This process overall helped me develop my professional network and emphasized the
importance of creating these connections.

Tally entries
Tally is an ERP accounting software package used for recording day to day business data. It
helps in maintaining financial records of the company that includes all receipts and payments
along with taxes and deductions. At first, we were briefed regarding how to use tally and
enter the data on it for few days. Later they provided us with raw data and punch data in tally.
What was learned?
Since tally is one of important software in business world. And getting the opportunity to
learn regarding that would help me boost my career in future.

Data entries in excel sheet

I punched data’s of customers like their bank transactions, sales, purchases and so on in excel
sheet
What was learned?

Through this, I learned regarding segmentation of data’s into different heads. It also helped
me knowing many technical aspects of MS excel and also improved typing speed with more
precision.

Page | 14
Following the organization culture

Every organization despite their size has its own culture. It’s essential to observe others and
learn how they engage and interact with co-workers, or help them with projects and task.
What was learned?
During my internship in that organization, I was able to adopt quite well in their working
environment as employees were kind and helpful. It also helps me know how the
organization culture actually feels like. A simple example can be a bio matric for attendance,
which aid me in knowing the value of time.

Keeping a journal
During my internship, I had a journal and took notes every day about new things I learned,
feedback I was given by CA, strength and weakness I noticed, and things I wanted to research
and learn more about.
What was learned?
Keeping journals helped me understand myself more and identify the areas that I needed to
improve in.

Communication skills
Communication is the key to success in a professional environment.
What was learned
I learned that it’s important to communicate with CA or other employee via phone or email or
SMS if I have questions or if I don’t know how to work on a task. Asking for help and
clarification is better than pretending to be understood. As an intern, good communication
will help with productivity, efficiency, engagement and growth.

Page | 15
2.6 ASSIGN TASK AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Process involved accomplishing the assigned task in internship.
GST filings
 At first we were briefed regarding taxation. Then provided us with different taxation
norms and tax slabs.
 Later they instructed us in preparing ITR’s statements of clients in excel sheet as per
the specified format.
 Before entering data into income tax site, we also prepared offline for cross checking
and to avoid errors.

Vouching
During the internship term, we visited few firms wherein we did vouching before the audit.
 In vouching, we had to cross check the company receipts and payment alongside with
the company’s cash book.

Tally entries
Most of utilizes TALLY ERP 9 for recording all their financial transactions as it is more
accurate and there is low risk of data loss. So it’s kind of required skills for employee to have
knowledge regarding tally. As for interns like us, who will be doing work for short period,
it’s kind of difficult to fully understanding of tally. Yet there are following process to be
followed to accomplish the task.
 Firstly, we carefully review all records of vouchers and arrange into different heads
like purchase, sales and so on
 Then we create a company in Tally software by that company name and started
entering data’s.
 After completing entries posting, then we rechecked the data by Balance sheet, Trial
balance and Day book.
 In case of difficulties during the task, we immediately contacted our mentors in the
firm.

Page | 16
2.7 SELF EVALUATION
As I had opportunity to have one and half month’s internship at GABS & ASSOCIATES, I
have done different tasks such as vouching, filing GST returns and calculation of taxable
incomes and so on. During this internship, I came across various pros and cons within the
organization. The internship had helped me gain numerous knowledge regarding the
functioning of the organization its strengths and weakness. This will help me in near future
by inculcating all those learning’s when I become a professional.

PROS
According to study, while interning, I found numerous good things in GABS &
ASSOCIATES
 Security.
Despite being a small firm consisting of around eight member (including CA), the
firm had excel in its security. They have biometric to maintain for entry and exit of
employees with CCTV surveillance. They even have backups in case there is no
electricity so that it won’t affect their productivity.

 Well organized
Secondly, every employees are been well instructed regarding rules and regulation of
the firm. Each and every one has to abide by these norms. Having biometric helped
the firm to maintain proper timings.

 Healthy environment
The firm has strict rules and regulation in the matter of healthy surroundings. In the
company premises, one can see dustbins, clean toilets and clean drinking water
facility and proper sanitization of office equipment’s

The employees in GABS & ASSOCIATES are very humble and helpful in nature. In
office, we can see that each one is helping other for the growth and development.
Even CA comes forth to provide assistance in case of difficulties. They also provide
internship programs in their company

Page | 17
CONS
 Task Assignment
There is absence of daily task assignment in GABS & ASSOCIATES. Every
employee follows the same routine. They do not have a certain target for a day. So
because of the absence of task assignment there may be a monotonous in work routine
which can demotivate employee

 Failure to retain employees.

In GABS & ASSOCIATES, they are failing to retain their employees. As most of the
employees resign because of better salary packages in other firms

While self- evaluating myself during the internship period, I discovered the
strengths and weakness about myself such as
 During the internship, I learned about the application of theoretical concept
into practical
 I am flexible to adopt to any place
 I am a quick learner.

Page | 18
2.8 SWOT ANALYSIS OF GABS & ASSOCIATES

 Some of the employees are not from finance background.
 The employees are not well trained
 Company is technologically backward
 Lack proper strategies for expansion

 Grow of indirect tax practices ( Government implementation of GST in India)
 Better customer satisfaction

THREATS

 Increasing complexity in the tax laws, fema, auditing etc

Page | 19
3.0 CONCLUSION
The internship report is prepared to explain the different tasks performed during the time such
as vouching, data entry in tally, TDS returns, GST filings and returns. Though all this jobs are
challenging and need more focus and concentration to perform. And activities like vouching
and tally are very useful and will add more value towards the person’s performance and
resume in future. Yet, all this required more practice, which cannot be accomplished in a
short time period.

Furthermore, GAB & ASSOCIATE team were very helpful and ready to assist us in our
learning’s. Despite, the firm being small with fewer members there was good cooperation
among them. However for better operations and growth firm need to opt for better technology
and need to have more training programs.

All this are the crucial findings through in-depth study of the different operations of the firm.
