A hairdresser is one engaged in the art or business of beautifying the hair
through hair color, bleaching, perming, trimming, and many others. To become a
successful hairdresser, one should learn to extend his understanding and patience
in this art. Beyond the hair coloring, bleaching, and cutting, one must be able to
check and analyze the hair and scalp condition of the client or patron to determine
the appropriate application needed to be used.

What’s In
Let’s review our previous lesson:

Notes to the Teacher

Instruct the students to have a 1 Big notebook for their hand
written outputs and learnings.
The answers to the matching type quiz printed in this module
will be written on big notebook.

What’s New

Preliminary Activity: Let us watch that video?

The reputation for good application of hair bleaching builds friendly

relationships with the patrons and is the foundation for future business. Preparing
the client is an important preliminary step for various hair treatments. The
importance of considering the factors in hair coloring should not be under-estimated.
That is why your hairstylist will give you the best salon experience, by giving analyzing
first your hair and scalp condition before applying the hair bleach.

Have you tried bleaching your hair? How was it?

Did your hair technician or hairstylist tell you some stories? Or even advice
you some techniques on how you take care of your hair on your own and be groomed
all the time without them?

Do you know any celebrity who bleach their hair ? Can you name them? Do
you admire their hair ? Did you wish to have that kind of hair? Are you happy with
the way they carry themselves?

Let’s talk about some of the hair bleach commercials in our country or other
countries. Do you know any other famous brands of hair bleach? Have you tried using
those hair bleach?

Have you noticed their promises in using their product? What are those? Did
it meet your expectation after using those products?

What can you say about the pictures below?

HOW TO BLEACH HAIR WITHOUT DAMAGE

• Use a good quality bleach, and 20 or 30 Vol developer.
• The right bleach to developer ratio is 1:2 ratio.
• Use 20 Vol for the regrowth area, and when you need to lift by 1-2
levels.
• Use 30 Vol for the lengths, and when you need to lift by 3 levels or
more.
• Lift to a very pale yellow (level 10). If there is orange in the hair after
bleaching, you need to rinse and do again.
• Some brands never require you to use 40 Vol develo per. Using 40 Vol
developer may compromise hair integrity.
• How long to leave bleach in hair? Development of the hair to bleach
may vary on the brand you are using but bleach are usually between
15 and 30 minutes.
• How to bleach evenly? always apply bleach f irst to the parts that are
the darkest or the brassiest so that they get more processing time.

11

Downloaded by CristellAnn Jebulan (cristell.alternatives083094@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|20805849

• For full head bleaching, it is generally a good idea to start at the

back, where the hair is the thickest.
• How long to leave bleach in hair: aim to bleach until the hair reaches
level 9 or 10.
• Hairstylists frequently under-bleach, leaving the hair too brassy.
Don't be like this!!

STAGES OF BLEACHING HAIR:

1. HOW SHOULD I PREPARE THE HAIR FOR BLEACHING?

• Hair bleach is just like hair color, it is best applied on dry, unwashed
hair.
• Unwashed hair contains natural hair oils & this helps protects the
hair during the bleaching process.
• Before bleaching, brush the hair so that you can then section & apply
easily.

2. HOW DO I MIX THE BLEACH WITH THE DEVELOPER? WHAT IS THE

CORRECT BLEACH TO DEVELOPER RATIO?
• The recommended bleach to developer ratio is 1 part Bleach to 2 parts
developer.
• This will give you a fairly runny mix which will be easy and quick to
apply.
• Our recommended "fairly runny" mix will m ake it easier to cover all
the hair evenly, thus avoiding patchy results.
• It will also allow you to work fast. This also means you have longer
to work before the mixture turns dry.
• The only time you will need a thicker mixture which won't drip is
when you are doing a balayage (free painting of highlights) or when
you have a small area - for example a dark regrowth which you want
to focus on.
• If a thicker mix is preferred, 1 part lightener to 1 part developer is
good.
• Use the scoop provided in your Ugly Duckling bleach to measure out
the bleach. Then you can use the same scoop to measure out your
developer.
• Later, when you are more experienced, you can do it by sight.

12

Downloaded by CristellAnn Jebulan (cristell.alternatives083094@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|20805849

• Mix the bleach with your color brush until it forms a smooth
consistency (similar to gravy).
• Do this in a plastic mixing bowl. Add the developer to the powder
bleach a little at a time, stirring as you do.

TIP:
• ITS VERY IMPORTANT TO READ THE MANUFACTURERS
MANUAL BEFORE MIXING THE BLEACHER AND THE
DEVELOPER.

• A BLEACH MIX SHOULD LOOK LIKE - RUNNY, BUT NOT TOO

RUNNY.

PRINCIPLES OF HAIR BLEACHING (HAIR LIGHTENING)

Bleaching – means removing the natural pigment of the hair to obtain a lighter
shade.

Hair Lightening – brings a more natural hair color effect, that most clients
preferred this.

Lighteners – are used to achieve many lightening variations and effects.

Other uses of Lighteners:
• Lightening used to remove the color from one level to another.
• Lightening one shade level or seven shade levels can be achieved with a variety
• Lighteners can be used as a pre-softening treatment before color.
• Lightener may be used as an artificial color remover, especially after

Kinds of Highlighter/Bleacher
1. Oil, Gel or Cream Lighteners – these are the mildest form of lighteners. 20% or 30%
volume (6% or 9%) of hydrogen peroxide in which they are mixed gives a slow-acting
lightening action on medium-textured hair.

2. Powder Bleaches – are used for high degrees of lightening and usually go through the
red/gold stage. They are most suitable for off scalp lightening techniques. If you lighten a
natural dark hair you can expect the hair to go through the following stages of lightening:
1. black/ dark brown 4. Gold / yellow
2. brown 5. pale yellow
3. red/red gold
3. Toner – when you want to obtain toning results it means of pre-lightening the hair to the
desired stage and then applying the formulated color that will give the desired result – to
neutralize unwanted tone, enhance the tone to achieve the result.

When applying toner , the hair requires not only the right degree of pre-lightening but also the
correct degree of porosity. In applying toners, it also require precautionary patch test as they
contain ammonia. It is advise to read and follow manufacturers instructions.

13

Downloaded by CristellAnn Jebulan (cristell.alternatives083094@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|20805849

When you apply a pre-lightening mixture to the hair, it does two things:
1. it lightens the natural pigmentation of the hair,
2. it makes the hair more porous.

When bleach is mixed with hydrogen peroxide, oxygen is released. The product penetrates
the cuticle and then the cortex. Oxygen mixes with the melanin in the cortex creating
oxymelanin, which is colorless.
The oxygen forms with different color pigments in a certain order:
1. black 5. orange yellow
2. brown 6. yellow
3. red 7. pale yellow
4. orange

2.3 PERFORM HAIR BLEACHING ACCORDING TO ESTABLISHED

OR ACCEPTABLE PROCEDURES AND PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS
HOW LONG SHOULD I LEAVE THE BLEACH ON THE HAIR?

• If your client's hair is blonde (level 7 and higher) aim at between 15 -

20 minutes using 20 Vol developer.
• If your client's hair is dark blonde/light brown (level 5 -6), aim at
around 30 minutes using 30 Vol developer.
• If your client's hair is brown/dark brown (level 4 -5), aim at around
around 30-40 minutes using 30 Vol developer with fresh mix added
in during processing time.
• Not all bleaches have the same lifting property.
• More important than the time is the target
color that you are aiming for.
• You need to keep watching and rinse only
when the hair has been sufficiently lifted.
• To go blonde, you need to try & achieve is a
very pale yellow - level 9 or 10. See pictures
below for what level 9 and 10 look like.

Hair Lifted to Level 9

• You need to check that the hair is lifting every 10 minutes.

• If there are parts which are drying out an d still not lifted to very pale
yellow, make some more fresh mix and add it in.
• Don't rinse too early - this is the number one mistake that stylists
make! Take it to level 9 at least (see below ).
• After 40 minutes, rinse whatever the level. It will be dry a nyway, and
will have stopped working. (Bleach stops processing when it turns
dry).
• If you have not attained level 9/10, and provided the hair is still in
good condition (check by pulling a strand that it's still elastic and
strong) you can do a second appl ication.

14

Downloaded by CristellAnn Jebulan (cristell.alternatives083094@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|20805849

• Asian hair, Hispanic hair, other dark hair may require a second
bleach application to take it to level 9 or level 10.
• Hair that has been box dyed dark or colored with a vibrant color in
the past will also require a second application.
• When you are doing a second application, it should not be necessary
to use 30 Vol. This time use 20 Vol.
• You need to get rid of all the orange pigments and also most of the
yellow pigments before you rinse.
• When you get to your target level, rinse using an acidic shampoo.
This will close the hair cuticle after the bleaching process.
• You can also use purple shampoo. This will help neutralize the color
and take away some of the yellow.

Hair Lifted to Level 10

HOW DO I APPLY THE BLEACH ON THE ROOTS? AND HOW LONG DO I

LEAVE IT IN ON THE ROOTS?
• If your client's ends are perfectly light and only your regrowth is
dark, then you only need to apply bleach on the regrowth area.
• How long you leave it in will once again depend on how quickly that
part takes to get to level 9/10.
• Generally speaking, virgin regrowth near the root will process and lift
fairly quickly due to the heat of the scalp.
• 20 Vol developer is what you need for the regrowth area near the
scalp. Never use anything stronger there unless you have s ome color
removal you need to do.
• You have to try other brands and products, you have to look foa a
great lightener to use for a near root application - it's more
comfortable.
• Note that you don't actually need to deposit the bleach mixture on
the scalp: we recommend you stay 1/8 inch away from the root area.
• The mixture will travel up, and the heat from the scalp will take care
of the rest.
• Section the hair finely when you apply your color, using a "pasting"
motion with the brush.
• Then flick over a new secti on with your tail -comb and continue in
this way.
• The finer and more consistent your sections, the better a lifting result
you will get.

15

Downloaded by CristellAnn Jebulan (cristell.alternatives083094@gmail.com)

lOMoARcPSD|20805849

• If your lengths are very white, you need to be careful not to overlap
the bleach onto the white parts.
• Otherwise you will get breakage. So be careful about this!
• If you have overlapped by mistake, you can always wipe back the
mixture during processing and you should be fine.
• If on the other hands, you have lengths which also need some lifting,
you can of course extend to those areas once you have taken care of
the regrowth.
• As usual, check carefully and rinse when the regrowth and brassy
areas have all lifted nicely to a pale yellow.

Bleach processing for 35 min near the root.

HOW DO I APPLY THE BLEACH TO THE ENTIRE HEAD?

• If your client's entire head is dark, or brassy you will need to do

a full head application.
• Section the hair into 4 large sections with sectioning clips. Then
unclip one section and create mini half-inch sections using your
tail comb.
• Start applying bleach in the back of the head where the hair is
usually darkest and thickest, usually at the nape area. Take 0.5
cm partings and starting 2 cm away from the scalp, working
your way round to the front sections, in half-inch sections.

lOMoARcPSD|20805849

• If the ends prove too porous

during the preliminary strand
test, leave them untreated until
the midlengths have reached the
required color depth.
• Apply the mixture generously
with the brush to both sides of the
mesh and work into the section
with the fingers.
• The lightener is is applied to the
middle lengths first because the
heat from the scalp speeds up the
lightening action and so the roots
develop quicker. Keep the root area to the last unless the hair is very
short: so you need less processing time.
• Work fast so that that you can give the whole head an equal amount
of processing time.
• Place the sections against each other but do not pack them against
the scalp. Continue each section, moving towards the front until the
four quarters are covered. Do not comb the mixture through the hair
length.
• When the hair starts to lighten ( 10 to 20 minutes), start to apply
lightener to the roots. Starting at the darkest area, lay the mixture
on quickly with a brush.Do not stab the brush into the roots, to avoid
discomfort and possible inflammation.
• Keep partings small and check if there are missed spots. If the ends
were omitted at the start because they were too porous, apply the
mixture to them now.
• Leave for 10 minutes and do a strand test by wiping a small strand
at the nape with tissue. If the hair is not light enough. reapply the
mixture to this area. Test every 5minutes. Avoid sliding the tail of
the tint brush along the scalp, as this may cause patchiness in the
roots area.
• Make sure that you saturate the
hair properly with the product
mixture. You need to literally
smother the hair with bleach.
• When the hair has reached the
required degree of lightening it is
important that the mixture be
romoved correctly. It must be
shampooed out, rinse all the
mixture thoroughly from the hair.
• A toning rinse can be applied to the
lightened hair to neutralize
unwanted reflects. You can apply
conditioner or antioxidant after the
final rinse to assist combing and to reduce the chance of over-
oxidation of the hair.
• Pat dry carefull y and comb gently from the ends with a wide -tooth
comb.

The processing time will depend on the following:

• Strength of the hydrogen peroxide and the proportions of
mixture;
• degree of lightening desired;
• texture of the hair.

Pre - Lightening Stage and Applying Toner

There may be times when hair needs more extensive lightening
before hair is colored with a toner.

HOW DO I BLEACH HAIR EVENLY & CONSISTENTLY?

• Very often clients have hair which is different colors.
• They could have, for example
a. a regrowth area which is dark virgin hair
b. mid-lengths which have been colored one color and are now orange
c. ends which have been lightened several times and are really pale
white blonde.
• In such cases you as the hair technician will need to have a clear
bleaching strategy.
• You will need to figure out which areas need the most lifting and
apply bleach first on those areas.
• You may need to divide up your client's hair mentally into 3 different
sections and apply bleach at different times to each section.
• You may also need to keep watching as your customer's hair develops
and then add more bleach onto sections which are not lifting fast
enough.
• When you are doing this, you should make separate mixes as
necessary, using either 20 or 30 Vol.
• You should not attempt to tone until you have brought your client's
hair to one consistent color level and the hair has been bleached
evenly.

HOW DO I TONE THE HAIR AFTER BLEACHING?

You will need to tone the hair with a g ood quality toner. Otherwise
there will always be some yellow left.Because of the many possible
variations of the hair, the technician should advise the client of the most
suitable, achievable color. It may be difficult to lighten the hair
sufficiently to allow tones to give the full effect.

Procedure:
• Always mix the toner according to manufacturer’s instructions and the
client’s hair analysis.
• Remove pre-lightener thoroughly from the hair and towel dry.
• Starting at the nape area, apply the toner to the roots of the hair.
• Apply the remaining mixture through the middle lengths to the ends.
Milk through to the ends, keep the partings small.
• Lift the hair to aerate. If the ends are porous, apply the toner to them
only for the last few minutes. Check regularl y to ensure even result.

• Do not forget to do the strand test by drying a small strand in two or

three areas of the head., re apply the mixture if it has not reached the
required color.
• Rinse and shampoo the hair .

Classification of Highlighting
1. Streaking – applying lightener to specially selected areas, usually around the
front.
2. Frosting – fine strand are lightened all over the head to give a lighter effect.
3. Foiling – almost the same with streaking and frosting, foiling isolates selected
strands and packages them in foil during process.
4. Multi-shading – it involves using more than two shades in selected areas to
enhance a cutting line or to emphasize a movement.

The type of highlights required will influence the technique to be

used:
1. Foil technique – involves covering the selected meshes in lightener and folding
individually in a rectangular piece of foil. Its very popular in salon nowadays.
2. Weaving Technique/ pull through method – for partial coloring, it is suitable
for full head weaving. Foil/mesh method, small sections of hair are weaved evenly
throughout the head.
3. Cap Streaking Technique – involves in using a plastic cap and crochet needle.

2.4 Ensure clients’ safety and comfort during the process

• Make sure that the chemicals are fresh.
• Give the client a preliminary strand test
• Use plastic tools, never use metal implements or anything made of metal
because chemicals will react to the metal.
• Always wear a gloves, to protect your hand when applying the mixture.
• Analyze the hair and scalp of the client before proceeding.
• Avoid getting any barrier cream on the hairline, as it will prevent the
lightener from taking.
• Do not comb the lightener through.
• Do not pack the hair down during the processing as this will inhibit the
oxidation action.
• Rinse the hair well by using a tepid and not too hot water
