What Is It

Preparing the Client

Give the client a scalp analysis. Any cuts or small scratches will cause
discomfort to the client when the mixture is applied. Do not brush the scalp
before application for the same reason.
1. The client's clothes should be well protected with a cape and a
towel around the neck.
2. Protect your-hands—put on gloves.
3. Part the hair into four sections.

Client's Comfort and Protection

In hair bleaching, be extra careful so that the chemicals used should

not come into contact with the scalp and surrounding skin. A barrier cream
should be used around the hairline and on top of the ears. Extra care should
be given with very fine hair. Since bleaching will remove color from hair, it is
important to protect the client's clothes from any damage through accidental
spillage of products. Make sure that the client is comfortable throughout the
coloring process.

Preparing the Client Prior to Highlighting the Hair

Make sure that the client's hair is in good condition before starting the
procedure discuss with the client the areas he/she wants to be lightened.
Usually, 20 to 60 meshes are taken and as this is a lengthy and time-
consuming process, the cost of the service should reflect this.

5
Draping the Client
1. It is best to ask the client to wear protective gown made of plastic or a
rubberized bleaching/tinting gown to protect the client's clothes from any
chemical splashes. Most salons also use towels, shoulder capes, and tissues
around the neck area.

2. You may also need to use a barrier cream to protect the client's skin.
consulting the Client

Consulting the Client

1. checking the client's records to see if they have had any previous allergic
reactions to coloring products;
2. asking the client during the consultation if they have had any had adverse
effects form coloring;
3. visually checking the clients hair and scalp; and
4. carrying out skin and hair tests, referring to manufacturer's instructions at
all times.

Contradictions for Lightening the Hair

Medical reasons
Allergies to any products
Skin disorders
Incompatibility to products
Damage to the hair

Hair and scalp analysis

Analyze the scalp for cuts and abrasions could cause discomfort. If
upon inspection, there re cuts and abrasions in scalp which may cause
discomfort when hg on your client hair color is applied, it is necessary to
discourage the client from having color treatment. Before carrying out the hair
bleaching on your client, the following tests should be done.

4. Patch test
5. Incompatibility test
6. Porosity test
7. Elasticity test
8. Strand test
9.
Patch Test

When applying hair color, you have to check first whether your clients
allergies or sensitivity to the mixture. To identify an allergy in a client, patch
test must be given 24 to 48 hours prior to n application of an aniline tint or
toner. The tint use for the patch test must be the same type of tint and color

6
that will be used for the hair service. The following procedure for patch test
should be followed:

1. Select test area. Behind the ear or on the inside of the elbow are good
areas.

2. Using a mild soap, cleans the dry an area about the size of quarter.
3. Mix a small amounts of product according to the manufacturer’s
directions

4. Apply to the test area with sterile cotton swab.

5. Leave for 24 hours.

6. Examine the test rea. If here no signs of redness or irritation, you can
proceed with the hair coloring.
7.
Incompatibility Test

Incompatibility test are done in hair dressing to check for hair

substances, chemicals, minerals and salts that could have an adverse
reaction to the hair when new chemical is applied on it. This is done prior to
hair coloring, leaching or perming the hair.

Procedure:

1. Cut a small piece of the hair strand.

7
2. Immerse the strand into the solution to be used for 20 minutes.

3. A result is negative if there is any presence of heat, bad smell,

bubbling, or smoking.

Porosity test
Porous hair can absorb liquids (water or chemicals) through the cuticle
and into the cortex. If the cuticle is closed, fit and damaged then hair feels
smooth. However, once the hair has been physically damaged it becomes
more porous.

Procedure:

1. Take a strand of several hairs from four different areas of the head: the
front hairline, the temple, the crown and the nape.

2. Hold the strand securely with one hand and slide the thumb and
forefinger of the other hand from the ends to the scalp.

- If the hair feels smooth and cuticle is compact, dense, and hard, it
has low porosity.
- If you can feel a slight roughness, it has average porosity.
- If the hair feels very rough, dry, or breaks, it has high porosity.
Elasticity Test

The hair’s elasticity must be consider to guarantee a good result. An

elasticity test assesses hair tensile strength. A well-conditioned hair is springy
and bouncy; this means it has good elasticity. It can stretch up to one-third of
its length when dry, half of its length when wet, and then return to its original
length. However, hair that has lose tits elasticity because the internal chemical
links and bonds in cortex have been damage, may stretch up to two-thirds of
its length or even break off.

Procedure:
Remove a strand of hair from the side of the head above the ears. Hold
it between your thumb and forefinger. With the thumb nail and index of nail of

8
the other hand, run the distance of the hair rapidly as you would cut a ribbon
with scissors. This could create a series of small curls. Then, gently pull the
hair straight for 10 seconds and release. If the hair completely returns to the
curl pattern, it has good a good elasticity. if it returns only 50% or less, it is
structurally weak and require protein treatments.

Strand Test

Before applying a permanent hair color to the client’s, do a preliminary

strand test. This test will help in the proper color selection and indicate the
correct length of time to leave the color on the hair.

Procedure:

1. Drape the client for a wet service

2. Put on gloves to protect your hands
3. Mix a small amount of the selected hair color
4. Choose strands of hair for testing the color. It is best to choose strands
that are usually hidden.
5. Separate the strands from the rest of the hair by a ponytail.
6. Using gloved hands to apply the color onto the strand of hair.wait for 20
minutes
7. Wash the hair normally.

shampooing the Hair Prior to Hair Lightening

Shampooing is an essential part of hairdressing treatment. In order to
make the hair manageable for coloring processes, it must be thoroughly
cleansed of all dirt, natural grease, and hairstyling products. Hairstyling
products such as hairspray, mousse, and wax will cause barrier between the
hair and the chemical, and will cause unsuccessful result.

Applying the Shampoo

The amount of shampoo to be used should depend on the amount of
hair the client has. Use a little shampoo at a time so you can easy rinse it out.
Procedure
Step 1- Ensure your client is wearing the correct personal protective
equipment: a gown and a towel to protect their clothing. Detangle the hair
before you begin. Analyze the hair and scalp to make the correct product
choice, making reference to the hair type, texture and condition of the hair and
scalp (see the information at the end of this guide for more detail about
choosing the correct shampoo).

9
Licsalonapparel.com
Step 2- Ask the client to lean back into the wash basin and make sure they
are sitting comfortably. Remove any hair from their face and ask the client to
remove any accessories, such as glasses or jewelry.

istockphoto.com

Step 3- Run the water and check the water temperature on your wrist. Once
ready, apply water to the client’s scalp and ask them if the temperature is ok.
Starting at the front hairline, cup the hand to direct the water towards the
wash basin as you wet the hair so that you don’t wet the client’s face. Take
extra care around the hairline.

cosmopolitan.com
Step 4- Choose a suitable shampoo for the client’s hair type and any other
factors identified during the hair and scalp analysis. Depending on the hair
length and density, dispense the correct amount of shampoo, either one pump
or about the size of a two pence piece. Distribute the product evenly between
your hands then use ‘effleurage’ techniques to apply the product evenly
through the hair.

10

Step 5- ‘Rotary’ techniques are applied utilizing small, firm, circular massage
movements, using the pads of the fingers. ‘Friction’ techniques, with quick,
rubbing movements, will remove any build up or debris from the hair, if the
hair is not too long. Repeat the rotary massage technique until the shampoo
and water emulsify.

Step 6- When the hair is ready for rinsing, turn the water back on, check the
temperature on your wrist and then rinse the hair using the same cupping
technique used at the beginning, checking the temperature with the client.
Work from the front hair line to remove the shampoo. Make sure both hands
and hair are free from any suds. Squeeze out any excess water.

11
Step 7- Apply a second shampoo if necessary, repeating the shampoo
application and massage techniques. The second shampoo may lather more
than the first.

Step 8- Run the water and rinse until all the shampoo has been removed.
Turn off the water and gently squeeze the hair to remove excess water. Wrap
a towel around the hair to stop any drips from entering the eyes or face.
