DCS800 STO Option

The document summarizes the "Safe Torque Off" option for ABB's DCS800 drives. It provides standards and principles for preventing unexpected startup of drive motors to ensure safety. The option uses redundant wiring and monitoring by safety relays to disconnect the armature converter from power supply and guarantee no torque at the motor shaft. It achieves Performance Level d and Safety Integrity Level 2 according to relevant safety standards like ISO 13849-1.

The new standard EN ISO 13849-1 takes care on prevention
of hazard situation by calculation of malfunction of electric
devices. The PL calculation is based on MTBF of electronic
devices multiplied with size of human injury. The calculation
takes also in account the wiring, how devices are wired (e.g.
redundant or not redundant) and discoverage of fault (contin-
ues fault monitoring or fault monitoring only during boot).
