Episode 3

This document provides an example of an action research process focused on improving mathematics performance among grade 11 students. It begins by observing that 55% of students scored in the average or poor range on a diagnostic test. The researcher then reflects on using the Jigsaw technique to address this problem by having students practice, solve, manipulate, reason, and perform mathematics in groups. An action plan is proposed to design Jigsaw activities to promote understanding and connections across math skills. The full action research paper linked provides an example of a completed action research study using this process.

EPISOD

NOTICE
E3
1. Action research is a type of inquiry that is practical, theoretical, and concerned with change and
improvement.

2. There are different sample models of action research such as DepEd, 2017, McNiff & Whitehead,
2006, and Nelson, 2014.

3. Action Research is a cyclical, recursive process of observe, reflect, act, evaluate, and modify.

4. Action Research begins with identifying a problem.

Since the 3 models are all for action research, what are the common elements of the three?

The common elements are the identification of the problem and planning the action research.

ANALYZE

I use Model B-Nelson, O. 2014

OBSERVE

Thirty-one or 55% scored the average and poor level of mathematical skills in the Diagnostic Test.

REFLECT

This action research aimed to improve the mathematics performance of 56 Grade 11 students of Buug
National High School students.

PLAN

The researcher addressed in improving mathematics performance using the Jigsaw technique.

ACT

It is proposed that teachers should design activities through the Jigsaw technique to promote
mathematics understanding by having students practice, solve, manipulate, reason, and perform.
Jigsaw technique may help students make connections across mathematical skills and concepts, and
other disciplines

What have you understood about the concept of Action Research and how will these be utilized
in your practice?

Action Research is a type of inquiry that enables teachers to investigate and evaluate their work. It
begins by identifying the problem, reflect on it, plan possible solutions, and put into action. Action
Research is used to address practical problems in the classroom and allows teachers to study their own
classroom and school setting to improve their effectiveness.
REFLECT

As a future teacher, is conducting an Action Research worth doing?

Yes, conducting an Action Research is worth doing as a future teacher.

Why?

Because it can help me learn how to improve my practice as a teacher in terms of teaching methods,
classroom management, preparation of the learning environment, developing instructional materials
and assessment.

How can AR be useful for every classroom teacher?

AR is useful to every classroom teacher because it will help them consider their teaching methods or
to adopt a strategy in order to solve everyday problem in the school setting.

AR PROMPTS

OBSERVE

a. What will be the most effective way of dealing with non-participative students?

b. How will you prevent truancy among students?

c. How will you put to optimum use the leadership skills of your students?

REFLECT

a. Encourage students to join as many activities in class and/or conduct groupings or group activities.

b. Prepare and teach your lessons effectively at all times and create a positive classroom environment.

c. Empower students to initiate activities in class.

PLAN

it helps to critically assess the goal to see if it's realistic whether students will become participative if
we have many activities in class that promotes team work .

CHECK FOR MASTERY

1. all check, except last will be x

2. only first is check, the three that follows are x

3. all items check

4. Teaching a new process to the students. Why? Because as teachers, it is necessary to be able to
teach and remain engaging. We need to be innovative and creative in finding the best possible ways to
keep the students motivated to learn.

5. all check
