There are many kinds of literature. Different kinds of literature are called genres. One exciting
genre of fiction is called magical realism. Like all fiction, it does not tell stories that happened in real life.
Instead, this genre mixes realistic stories with fantasy.
One of the first authors to bring this genre to a huge audience was Gabriel García Márquez. He
was an author from Colombia. His fiction was mostly based on people and places in Latin America. He
also wrote in Spanish. But his writing has been translated into many languages and read around the
world!
García Márquez took ideas from the things around him for his stories. For example, his
grandfather was once a colonel in the army. The main character in one of García Márquez’s most famous
books was also a colonel in the army. The setting of that same book is a small town called Macondo. This
fictional town is similar to where García Márquez grew up.
García Márquez also was inspired by the history of Latin America. He lived through a very violent
time in Colombia’s history. It was called La Violencia. Many people died during this time. Many of
García Márquez’s stories are set during this time.
García Márquez added layers of magic and fantasy to the realistic parts of his stories. In one book,
tiny yellow flowers rain down from the sky. People catch a plague of insomnia. And a rainstorm lasts for
five years!
In 1982, García Márquez won the Nobel Prize for Literature. This important prize honored him for
his stories that combined the real with the fantastic. Today, people still think of him as an amazing author
of magical realism.

Known as ‘Kalkajaka’ (place of spear or place of death), Black Mountain was an important
meeting place for clans of the Kuku Yalanji Aboriginal people and is the source of many dreaming
stories.
Black Mountain is in North Queensland and is an imposing short range of massive, black granite
boulders. The boulders look as if they have been roughly stacked on one another. Some are the size of
houses, and many appear to be dangerously balanced as if defying gravity. This range of jumbled rocks is
the home of frogs, wallabies, gigantic pythons and a strange beast some call the Queensland Tiger. There
have been many reported sightings of the “Tiger” which, it is said, has mauled and killed cattle in the
Cooktown area. The Tiger is described as a large striped cat somewhat like the marsupial lion, which
lived in Queensland until 20,000 years ago, when it became extinct.
The granite rock is actually a drab pinkish colour. Black Mountain’s dramatic, sinister black
appearance is due to a film of microscopic blue-green algae growing on the surface. Grey patches on the
mountain indicate a continuing break-up of the rocks. The blistering, hot rocks will often crack and split
with explosive results when hit by the cold rain of a summer storm.
Huge holes are abundant over the surface of the mountain, representing space between groups of
boulders leaning against each other. The outstanding feature of the area, which is made up of a number of
peaks, is the entire absence of soil on the surface. A number of hikers into the area have had accidents,
died or simply disappeared.
Black Mountain’s structure resulted from slow geological processes. Some 260 million years ago,
a mass of molten rock (magma) from volcanic action slowly solidified deep below the Earth’s surface,
forming a layer of hard granite rock. As softer land surfaces above eroded away, the cracked top of
granite layer was slowly exposed. Softer granite readily cracked while the harder rock remained as large
rectangular blocks. Over the centuries wind, rain and heat rounded off the corners, turning them into
boulders. The surrounding countryside eroded faster than granite, thereby creating Black Mountain as a
small range. The solid core of the ancient volcanic site now lies beneath the jumbled cover of boulders.
