Reflective Journal Rubric Guide

This document provides rubrics for evaluating reflective journal entries from nursing students at Taibah University. The rubrics assess journals on completeness, critical thinking, organization, evidence of rigor, and language/communication. The document also provides guidelines for students, requiring journal topics be at least one page and submitted on time to avoid grade reductions. It then shares three sample journal entries from a student, Shahad Aljuhani, reflecting on transitioning from student to professional nurse, exam strategies, and nursing subspecialties.

Topic 1: Student Nurse to Professional

As a nursing student, I have various tasks and responsibilities, but I

understand that they are not comparable to those of a registered nurse.
The topic of transitioning from a level of irresponsibility to a level of
responsibility helped me understand this process. I found the concept of
transition shock to be interesting and important to know because it is
normal to feel anxious, unstable, and insufficient when transitioning to a
registered nurse. During this period, I plan to seek help from my
colleagues, and I am confident that the feeling will pass quickly. This
topic also highlighted the importance of working with a team. Although it
may be challenging initially, I will improve my communication skills and
language to overcome any difficulties that may arise in the future.

Topic 2: Navigating Exam Strategies and Resources

This is a helpful topic with many strategies to overcome test anxiety. I

have used them before and found them to be very effective. One tip I
haven't tried yet is to envision the environment where I learned the
material, and I plan to try it in the future. In the nursing exam strategies,
there were useful tricks and techniques, such as excluding absolute word
options, choosing longer sentences, and thinking about what I can safely
do as a nurse first when I don't know the answer.

Topic 3: Nursing Subspecialties

I found this topic to be very informative and interesting. During my first

year of studying nursing, I became interested in pursuing a career as a
legal nurse consultant. However, I felt frustrated because this particular
field was not available in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, I discovered new
subspecialties, such as occupational nursing, that I was not aware of
before. Learning about these additional opportunities has been very
helpful in preparing for my future career as a nurse.
