Corn Narrative Report

The students planted corn as part of an agronomy course requirement. They were each given an area to plant yellow corn seeds directly in hills after applying complete fertilizer. They performed regular weeding and watering to care for the crop. Their first planting was mostly unsuccessful with low germination and damage from animals. After constructing fences, their second planting had higher germination rates around 50%.

NARRATIVE REPORT

I. TYPE OF CROP MANAGED: Corn (Zea mays)

II. INTRODUCTION

Maize, also known as corn in North American and Australian English, is a cereal

grain first domesticated by indigenous peoples in southern Mexico about 10,000

years ago. The leafy stalk of the plant gives rise to inflorescences (or “tassels”)

which produce pollen and separate ovuliferous inflorescences called ears that

when fertilized yield kernels or seeds, which are botanical fruits. The term maize

is preferred in formal, scientific, and international usage as the common name

because it refers specifically to this one grain whereas corn refers to any principal

cereal crop cultivated in a country. For example, in North America and Australia

corn is often used for maize, but in England and Wales it can refer to wheat or

barley, and in Scotland and Ireland to oats.

III. JOB ACCOMPLISHMENT

A. Orientation

Every group was required to provide their own corn seeds, the variety that

was used is yellow corn. Each group also required to buy their own

complete fertilizer. Each student required to bring a bamboo poles and

requested to contribute a small amount for the nails, it was for the

construction of fences.

B. Land Preparation

The area that was given intended for the corn plantation was cleared by

using bolos and pulverized using shovels. The area were divided equally

and was given to each group to start making hills for the seeds to sow.
C. Growing of Seeds

Before sowing the seeds, the complete fertilizer were applied first before

planting the seeds. After that, the seeds were planted directly at the hills

because corn does not need to sow it in a seed tray and transplant after

several days, direct seeding requires less labor and tend to mature faster

than transplanted crops.

D. Care and Maintenance

Corn is meant to grow quickly, so it needs a lot of consistent water to keep

from wilting. We always make sure to keep the soil moist. Corn can fall

prey to many different insects, so we make sure to visit it often. Every

week weeding was done to avoid coming of insect.

IV. OBSERVATION

Our first time of planting corn were not successful because only few of the seeds

germinated, there are some seeds that survived but it was damaged by the

animals that keeps coming in our area. We start making fences made out of

bamboo poles to protect the crops from any harm coming from the outside of the

area. We tried to plant for the second time after the fences were completely done

and about 50% were germinated.
