Artistic Statement
[second draft]
For a long time I was fine just being on the stage. Embodying a character and having
fun with friends brought me joy and escapism from everything else in life, but I always
knew something was missing. I knew theatre was something I wanted to continue
doing for as long as I could, but I didn’t want to do the same 5 musicals and plays and
stand there, knees knocking, under the bright stage lights forever. I wanted to create.
Really create. I wanted to create worlds with people and build something from the
ground up. I wanted to get that warm feeling of, ‘I made that happen’. And so that’s
what I set out to do.
A large part of my college theatrical journey extended to new-works stage
management and producing management. Working in these parts of theatre allowed
me to step into a leadership role, but most importantly to me, it showed how much
collaboration is an important part of the creative process. This was especially
apparent when stage managing new works because it felt like every single person was
a part of making a new play, not just the playwright. And this was a conscious decision
made by the cast and crew that made it feel like everyone was on the same creative
level. Never once did I feel like I had more power over anyone else in a production, and
it always felt like a conversation between actor and tech. Whether it's about costumes,
or thoughts on the script, or what movement on stage fits their character best, or
concerns about stage intimacy, every person has something important to bring to the
table. To me, this further opened up conversations about safe theatrical practices.
Making sure the stage is a safer place for both the actors and tech comes from both a
place of self advocacy and a want to strengthen my community. As a queer and
disabled artist, I have the chance to bring in practices that I know will help others like
me. [stuff about disabilities] In and out of the script, those with disabilities should
have a space to represent themselves and be comfortable. [stuff about queerness]
There are many shows that showcase queer people, but they aren’t necessarily
accessible for queer artists. They tell stories of coming out and of being outcasted, but
not many pieces show angles of queer people just being people or falling in love
without the harshness or fear of homophobia down their neck. It’s also harder to be on
stage and feel safe whether it be because of the real life hate from other artists or
feeling as if you can’t mentally go to such a difficult space without hurting yourself
While advocating for people like me, I also have the power to open up and extend that
same space to others who are not as represented and that is something that is really
important to the work that I do as an artist. We can’t truly have a theatre filled with
love and joy without actively making that love and joy for everyone.
One way I have discovered theatre making that allows for integrating community,
advocacy for myself and others, love and joy is through writing. Personal writing is
something I have done a lot throughout my life, but working on new-works in college
and discovering how the process can build something so beautiful is what pushed me
to take a stab at playwriting. Writing stories about love, growing up and finding joy in
the little things. Joy and love are things I desire to spread in my day to day life, so
when I think about the shows that I want to write for other people to build upon
together, that’s what I picture.
There are so many things to love about theatre, whether it be on stage or not, and I
aim to expand how we see it and create that magical feeling of being seen. You could
take some string lights, a tambourine and some bodies on a stage and create
something no one will ever forget. You can touch hearts.
