Ms. Schmidt taught in a Title I classroom of 28 students at Cedar Heights Elementary for eight weeks.
The
grades she was responsible for consisted of first, second, and third grade. The students in our Title I
program are mostly from lower income families. Lexi had groups of one student to small groups of four.
Cedar Heights is one of seven elementary schools in Cedar Falls, Iowa that has approximately 480
students enrolled. She taught curricular areas that include: reading, phonics, spelling, grammar, and
writing. Ms. Schmidt took part in Title I routines and breakfast duty.
Ms. Schmidt had good planning skills. She tried to make sure she challenged the students in her lessons.
Lexi encouraged them to share their thinking in a safe environment. Ms. Schmidt took suggestions given to
her and would attempt to implement the suggestions she related to into her own teaching style. Lexi
assessed the students by asking questions and wanted to be aware of the level of understanding present in
the small group. Lexi used reflection over lessons taught that allowed her to see each student’s growth, or
areas of difficulty, so she could direct her attention according to the students’ needs.
Another area of strength was her ability to quickly build a rapport with the students. They knew they could
trust her and she cared about them. Ms. Schmidt used classroom management and discipline techniques
that worked well for her. She was encouraging and had an appropriate set of expectations with consistent,
but gentle guidance to help the students’ meet those expectations. The students felt comfortable to take
risks within her lessons. Lexi also developed a rapport with the other staff members. She participated in
Collaborative Team Time (CTT) meetings, staff meetings, and professional development.
Ms. Schmidt has come to the student teaching experience with natural ability. This combined with constant
self-evaluation, has made her a good student teacher. She will improve these skills as she has her next
student teaching experience. Lexi will be a good teacher candidate. I believe her to be a nice addition to
any elementary school and I recommend her. If you would like to speak to me regarding Ms. Schmidt’s
