BRIEF INTRODUCTION

Campsite Etiquettes
Philippines has great mountains which
attracts people who loves adventure, so that
mountaineering is one of the fast-growing
outdoor ecotourism. However, some people
are unaware of the proper care for our
beautiful nature. There are ways to enjoy
this thrilling outdoor activity without
harming our nature.
Camping is a great recreation activity
because it boosts our physical and
psychological health. And it also a great
help for the local economy. But it also has a
negative impact to our natural environment
based on the study of Global Development Reference:

water) depletion  Groundwater and compaction
 Water quality coastal water  Accelerated erosion
degradation pollution  Damage to natural
 Land degradation  Sewage pollution features
 Vegetation  Aesthetic pollution  Vandalism
degradation  Ground cover loss.
 Wildlife disturbance

Camping etiquettes are the directions to enjoy our natural environment in an

ecological way that avoids harming our nature, and the best example of it is the Leave
on Trace Principles.

5
Leave on Trace Principles
 Plan ahead and prepare
 Travel and camp on durable surfaces
 Dispose of waste properly
 Leave what you find
 Minimize campfire impacts
 Respect wildlife
 Be considerate of the other visitors

no-trace-principles-for-kids/

1. Plan and prepare

 Know the regulations and special concerns for the area you will visit.
 Prepare for extreme weather, hazards, and possible emergencies.
 Set your trip to avoid times of high use.
 Create small groups when possible during trip or consider splitting
larger groups into smaller groups.
 Repackage food to minimize waste production.
 Instead of the using of marking paint, rock cairns or flagging, use a map
and compass as possible
2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces
 Utilized the established trails and campsites.
 Camp at least 200 feet from riparian areas.
 Keep campsites small. Focus activity in areas where vegetation is
absent.
 Trek in single file in the middle of the trail, even when it is wet or
muddy.
In pristine areas:
 Disperse use to prevent the creation of campsites and trails.
 Avoid places where impacts are just beginning.
3. Dispose of waste properly
 Pack it in, pack it out. Inspect your campsite and rest areas for spilled
foods or trash.
 Dig cat holes (6 to 8 inches at least 200 feet from water, camp, and trails)
to deposit solid human waste.
 Pack out toilet paper and hygiene products.
 Carry water 200 feet away from streams or lakes and use small amount
of biodegradable soap when washing yourself or your dishes. Scatter
strained dishwater.
4. Leave what you find
 Preserve the past: culture or historical structures and artifacts may be
examined but refrain from touching the said artifact.
 Leave rocks, plants, and other natural objects as you find them.

6
 Do not introduce or transport non-native species
 Building structures, furniture, or digging trenches is not advisable
5. Minimize campfire impacts
 Use a lightweight stove for cooking and enjoy a candle lantern for light.
 Use fire rings, fire pans, or mood fires on established grounds.
 Keep fire small. Use only sticks from the ground that can be broken by
hand.
 Burn all wood and coals to ash, put out campfires completely, then
scatter cool ashes.
6. Respect wildlife
 Observe wildlife from a distance. Do not follow or approach them.
 Do not feed animals. Feeding wildlife damages their health, changes
natural behavior, and discloses them to predators and other hazards.
 Protect wildlife and you r food by storing rations and trash firmly.
 Control pets always or leave them at home.
 The wildlife is sensitive when it’s mating, nesting, raising young, or
winter season, so it’s best to avoid them during these times.
7. Be considerate of the other visitors
 Respect other people and protect the quality of their experience.
 Be courteous. Yield to other users on the trail.
 Step to the downhill side of the trail when running into pack stock.
 Camp away from trails and other visitors when taking breaks.
 Refrain from being too noisy and having load voices. Let nature’s sounds
prevail.

REMEMBER
Leave on Trace Principles
 Plan ahead and prepare
 Travel and camp on durable surfaces
 Dispose of waste properly
 Leave what you find
 Minimize campfire impacts
 Respect wildlife
 Be considerate of the other visitors

These principles help us to have more enjoyable outdoor adventure with other people,
and without harming our natural environment or lessen the negative impact of
ecotourism.

CHECKING YOUR UNDERSTANDING

In this time of pandemic, it is important to stay home, stay safe and stay healthy. But
how could we do that? Just like in the camping etiquettes, it is important to have good
practices to be safe and sound in this pandemic. Have a conversation/ focus group
discussion online with your classmates and discuss the safety measures during this
pandemic.
