Design and Technology
Unit 1 :Approaches to
design
Technology is one of the keywords
of our world, yet it is also one of the
most confused. As an analytical
category it seems necessary for our
understanding of all of humanity’s
history, and indeed beyond.
The word “Techne” is widely accepted
to mean “skill” and “art.” The
reconciliation of both interpretations
of the Greek word are facilitated by an
appeal to the logical connection that
exists between them: to create
anything requires skill and art. Both
skill and art may be considered as
metonyms for creation.
Technology is defined as “a system created
by humans that uses knowledge and
organization to produce objects and
techniques for the attainment of specific
goals”. Examples that currently exist, such
as the laser, the television, or the computer,
all qualify as technology according to the
criteria of this definition.
Design is the process of converting an idea
into information from which a product can
be made. From an engineering perspective,
the application of scientific concepts,
mathematics, and creativity to envision a
structure, a machine, system, or artifact
that performs a pre -specified function is
the definition of design.

In designing a product, both form and
function are important, both disciplines
(engineering and industrial design) are
crucial in the development of the final
information from which a product can
be made.
The degree to which each discipline
dominates the design varies from product to
product. The design of a fighter plane is
going to depend more on the principles of
aerodynamics than on requirements of
appearance or what pleases the eye. The
design of fabric, on the other hand, is
dominated by needs of appearance.
The change in design process
The outcome of the design process is the information that can be
used to build it. The format of this information has changed over the
years.
Informal drawings :
In a primitive society, people designed things without being
conscious of the effort. Stone-Age tools, doors to mud dwellings,
and protection for the feet are examples of products that were
developed with no formal drawing or awareness of the design
process.
The change in design process
Formal blueprints:
Design by drawing or sketching existed
in some form or the other for more than
5000 years, it became more formalized
with time.
Design drawings :
The modern design process emerged with the
growth of the industrial society. Design by
drawing provided a designer much greater
flexibility to manipulate the design compared
to the pre-industrial society craftsmen. This
flexibility allows manipulation of the design
without incurring the high cost of building the
product then changing it. The design-by
drawing process, however, does not guarantee
success.
