About the NGO
Sarthak Foundation is a non-profit organization that operates
under the Societies Act of 1860. Their goal is to provide
education to children between the ages of 3 and 18 in socio-
economic disadvantaged groups (SEDs), aiming to make them
happy and empowered. They have established Yellow Rooms in
urban slums and villages across India, including 18 rooms in
Lucknow. These Yellow Rooms serve as educational spaces where
children can acquire essential life skills.
The primary objective of the Yellow Rooms is to impart practical
skills that will benefit children throughout their lives. By doing so,
Sarthak Foundation indirectly influences society by raising
awareness among parents and encouraging their involvement in
the education of both boys and girls.
Sarthak Foundation has achieved significant milestones, such as
the establishment of their own formal school called RTI Sarthak
Gurukul in village. This school currently educates more than 400
children from 23 villages. Additionally, the organization strives to
maintain a gender ratio of 55:45, with 55% of the students being
girls. Since 2013, Sarthak Foundation has reached and impacted
over 1800 children in Lucknow and Noida, located in Uttar
Pradesh.
These milestones serve as indicators of Sarthak Foundation's
progress and effectiveness in their mission to empower children
from socio-economic disadvantaged groups through education.
DAY 01: JULY 3, MONDAY
On the first day of the week, we played a game with children in which
they had to match tiles of number and number of balls according to
the quantity of balls. In the expressions class we taught children how
to express anger and difference in the pitch while we’re angry, to
make this more engaging we asked them about the things that made
them angry in their daily life and asked what do they do in these
situations. Class ended by revision of alphabets and numbers.

DAY 02: JULY 4, TUESDAY

A lively dance session was organized on songs like ‘LAKDI KI
KATHI’ to add some fun and energy to the day. Afterward, a
mathematical addition and subtraction activity took place. The
children were given some expressions on the whiteboard, with
one or two elements missing. They were challenged to find the
missing numbers or symbols and solve the expressions accurately
and quickly. This activity aimed to test their mathematical
abilities, including their speed and accuracy in solving problems.
DAY 03: JULY 5, WEDNESDAY
A fun activity was arranged for the young students in the tender feet
batch. They were requested to bring paper, while colours were
provided to them. I had the opportunity to teach them the technique
of blot painting once again after once during the first week. The
children enthusiastically participated and showcased their creativity
through their artwork. They created vibrant flowers, leaves, houses,
cakes, and any other imaginative objects they could think of. Their
small yet impressive artworks reflected their artistic abilities and
imaginative thinking and this activity gave them an idea about
symmetry and developing pattern recognition ability.

DAY 04: JULY 6, THURSDAY

The day commenced with an energetic dance session
accompanied by the song "BUM BUM BOLE," designed
specifically for the younger students. The purpose of this
activity was to foster a vibrant and enjoyable atmosphere
where children could express themselves freely through
dance. Additionally, a math session was conducted for the
children. They were initially given the task of writing number
names up to 30, followed by identifying number names
associated with random numbers. To enhance engagement,
the students were actively involved by coming to the board
and writing their answers, while others simultaneously
worked on similar questions in their notebooks.

DAY 05: JULY 7, FRIDAY

On this day we once again took a trip to nearby slums and
conducted a survey of new population in the area which
migrated in search of work. We convinced parents to send
their kids to the Yellow Room so that they can get a better
opportunity at getting admission at govt. schools as the NGO
facilitates the process and ensures smooth transitions from
yellow room to schools.
DAY 06: JULY 8, SATURDAY
On the last day of the internship, we taught kids about
carrying and borrowing while doing addition and subtraction
in maths. And after that an amazing dance session was
organised for kids’ entertainment and we also showed them
cartoons for 1 hour on their request.
OBSERVATION/LEARNINGS:
During my internship at Sarthak Foundation, I had an incredibly
enriching week that provided me with valuable insights and
experiences. Here are some of the key lessons and observations I
gained:
1 Respectful and well-behaved children: One of the first things I
noticed was the level of respect and manners displayed by the
children towards their teachers and supervisors such as greeting
every time they see an authority figure saying sorry and thanks. It
was heart-warming to witness their genuine respect for their seniors
2 Patience in challenging situations: This week taught me the
importance of patience, regardless of the difficulties at hand. Despite
the unbearable heat, I was amazed to see the young children's
eagerness to attend school and engage in learning activities. This
experience reminded me of the significance of remaining patient and
composed in challenging circumstances.
3 Challenges faced by teachers: While conducting fun activities with
the children, I gained a deeper understanding of the challenges that
professional teachers face in managing and engaging energetic
children, especially when they are given the freedom to play. It made
me realize the immense dedication and skill required to effectively
handle such situations.
In summary, my week at Sarthak Foundation was filled with valuable
lessons and observations. I witnessed the children's respectful
behaviour, learned the importance of patience in challenging
situations, and gained insight into the difficulties faced by
professional teachers in managing active and playful children.
