The story:

Narrator :
The Tiger did not sleep last night because he chased out a band of poachers which tried to
take Deer and Serow for their delicious meat and beautiful heads. The Tiger surprised the
poachers with his mighty roar while the poachers were busy stalking Deer and Serow, surprising
the poachers as well as Deer and Serow. Startled from their feeding, Deer and Serow saw that
there were poachers aiming their guns at them. Immediately they bolted away and disappeared
into the thick jungle. Deer and Serow were natural enemies with tigers, so they did not thank the
Tiger for saving them from the poachers. Only when the sun rose and the poachers went home
empty-handed did the Tiger return to his lair to rest.

Monkey : (shouting to the Mouse) Hey, the Tiger is sleeping today!

Mouse : The Tiger worked hard last night, he deserves some rest!
Monkey : I see, I see. Thank you my friend Mouse for telling me this, I shall not disturb
him today then. Good day, Mouse.

Narrator :
One day the Tiger came back home to his lair a bit roughed up. His tail was knotted. His
fur was covered with dirt. Some animals said that the Tiger had fought some metal elephants at
the edge of the jungle. The metal elephants were ridden by humans, and they were cutting down
trees and then loaded the fallen trees into lorries to take out of the jungle. The Tiger got angry at
the humans for cutting down the beautiful old growth trees of his jungle and so chased them. The

humans were so frightened of the Tiger they scrambled off and left their metal elephants. The
Tiger checked on the metal elephants because he had never seen them. Unfortunately the Tiger
slipped and fell into a pool of mud which was created when the rain fell on the patch of land
cleared off trees.

Monkey : (laughing) Look at the Tiger, he is so dirty!

Mouse : I wish to help clean his fur but I am such a small animal.
Monkey : That is true, it would take a mouse days to clean a tiger’s fur. As for me, I would
spend my days just doing what I do best, laughing! (laughing)

Narrator :
The Tiger came home one day very injured. He was shot in his paw by a hunter whom
wanted to kill the Tiger so to get his beautiful fur. There was a terrible fight between the Tiger
and the hunter. However, the Tiger managed to just avoid getting killed by biting the hunter’s
hand. The hunter ran out of the jungle because he could no longer use his hand to shoot the Tiger
with. Having lost a lot of blood from his wound the Tiger lie down sleeping in his lair to recover
for many days.

Monkey : (jumping around with excitement) The Tiger is sleeping again today! Yesterday
too. And tomorrow he might sleep too! Yahoo!
Mouse : Hush Monkey, the Tiger is badly injured. Let him recover.
Monkey : (sounding irritated) And what can you do to help Tiger, little Mouse? You
cannot do anything!

Narrator :
The Monkey gathered his troops of monkey friends and they started to throw a party to
celebrate Tiger’s absence from the jungle. Many other animals also joined in the party when they
saw the monkeys having fun, dancing from trees to trees while eating noisily. The Mouse only
watched quietly from his hole house in the ground.

(Monkey starts singing)

Monkey : In the jungle the mighty jungle the Tiger sleeps tonight…
All others : Wim wim bawe…
Monkey : In the jungle the mighty jungle the Tiger sleeps tonight…
All others : (singing intensify) Awimbawe awimbawe awimbawe awimbawe
Monkey : In the jungle the mighty jungle the Tiger sleeps tonight
In the jungle the mighty jungle the Tiger sleeps tonight
Ohh weee wim wim wimbawe
All others : Awimbawe awimbawe awimbawe awimbawe

The Tiger came back home very late on this day. It was noon when Tiger arrived at his
lair. He was caked in mud and there were porcupine quills stuck in his whiskers. The Tiger was
too weak to hunt large and fast-running prey like the Deer or the Serow and so he tried to hunt a
small porcupine. However, the porcupine saw the Tiger coming after him because the Tiger was
limping. The gunshot wound in Tiger’s paw was yet to recover. Scared for his life, the porcupine
stuck his quills into the hungry Tiger’s face and then ran off into the jungle. The Tiger went
home hungry and sick. He closed his eyes to sleep as soon as he lie down. There was no other
animal who saw the Tiger coming home that day except the Mouse. Unable to hold back his
feelings anymore, the Mouse went up to the sleeping Tiger. He pulled out the quills that were
stuck in Tiger’s face. It was difficult, but the Mouse managed to pull all of the quills out. The
Tiger slept for seven days and seven nights while the Mouse watched over him and brought him
little morsels of food that the Mouse could carry.

The jungle was in an uproar. Since news came out that the Tiger had not been sighted in a
while, humans started to come to the jungle without fear. Several deer and serow were shot down
for their delicious meat and beautiful heads. Humans drove metal elephants to clear the forest of
its precious trees. Even Monkey lost his favourite tree where he held his jungle parties. Only then
the animals of the jungle felt what the Tiger did had been all for them. They all gathered to go
see Tiger at his lair, and they were surprised because they saw Mouse at Tiger’s lair working so
hard for the Tiger. The Tiger was still sickly, but he was recovering, and his fur was neat. He
looked almost as great as he used to. Feeling ashamed of the Mouse, the animals of the jungle
began helping out to save their jungle.

Monkey : Humans are coming, humans are coming!

The Tiger heard Monkey’s cry from up in the high trees. Deer and Serow quickly run to
evade the hunters pursuing them. The Tiger waited until Deer and Serow passed him by with the
hunters right behind them. How shocked are the hunters to find the Tiger meeting them! They
ran as the Tiger roared in their face with anger. The jungle is safe again for all animals from
humans.
