Goal of Preventive Counselling:

“Love All,
Serve All.
Help Ever,
Hurt Never”.
As Kessler and Albee have noted, “everything aimed at
improving the human condition, at making life more fulfilling
and meaningful, may be part of primary prevention of mental
or emotional disturbance. As an example, selective prevention
measures are agreed to be appropriate when an individual is a
member of a subgroup of the population whose risk of
becoming ill is above average. Counselling towards teenagers to
build self-esteem is an example of selective prevention.
Effective strategies to reduce bullying such as school-based
anti-bullying programs have also proved effective in reducing
subsequent aggression or internalizing problems in adolescents.

Why use Cognitive Therapy?

Cognitive Therapy was chosen to deal with our

client John Doe because it is a form of
psychological treatment that has been
demonstrated to be effective for a range of
social problems. These problems include
suicide, depression, anxiety disorders, alcohol
and drug use problems, marital problems,
eating disorders, and severe mental illness.
This approach teaches patients like John Doe
the skills to use alternative ways of thinking and
behaving during episodes of suicidal crises and
assists them in building a network of mental
health services and social supports to prevent
future suicide attempts. It is designed to be
provided by individual therapists on a one-to-
one basis.

Cognitions are thoughts, beliefs and

internal images that people have about
events in their lives.
Cognitive Therapy
• What is Cognitive Therapy?

• A type of therapy that focuses on mental

processes and their influences on mental
health and behavior. A common premise of all
cognitive approaches is that how people think
largely determines how they feel and behave.

Theories

Two theories that have a cognitive base, Rational Emotive

Behavioral Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
(CBT) will be used when dealing with Preventive Counselling.
These theories are Cognitive- Behavioral in nature because they
emphasize both cognitions and behaviors. They are humanistic
as well.
