Finds the area of a given circle.
Introductory Message
For the Facilitator:
Welcome to the Mathematics 5 Self-Learning Module on Finding the area of a given
circle!
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.
This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims
to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely:
Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while
taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:
Notes to the Teacher
This contains helpful tips or strategies
that will help you in guiding the learners.
As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them
to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist
the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the Learner:
Welcome to the Mathematics 5 Self-Learning Module on Finding the area of a given
circle!

LESSON
Explore and Discover
Grace wants to buy a round photo frame for her sister. The radius of the
photo frame is 8 cm. What is the area of the photo frame?
What is asked in the problem? the area of the round photo frame
Do you know how to find the area of a circle? Let’s find out!
The area of a circle is the number of square units inside that circle.
If each square in the circle to the left has an area of
1 cm2, you could count the total number of
squares to get the area of this circle. Thus, if there
were a total of 28.26 squares, the area of this circle
would be 28.26 cm2.
However, it is easier to use one of the following formulas:
𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 2 or 𝐴 = 𝜋 • r • r
22
Where: A = Area r = radius and 𝜋 = 3.14 or 7
Let’s find the area of the photo frame Grace wants to buy using the
formula.
𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 2
= 3.14 • (8 cm)2
= 3.14 • 8 cm • 8 cm
= 3.14 • 64 cm2
= 200.96 cm2
Therefore, the area of the round photo frame Grace wants to buy is
200.96 cm2.
Another example:
d= 4 cm
What is the area of this circle?
Since the formula is only given in terms of radius, remember to
change from diameter to radius when necessary. The radius is equal to half
the diameter.
What is the radius of the given circle? 4cm ÷ 2 = 2 cm
𝐴 = 𝜋𝑟 2
Therefore, the area of the circle with
= 3.14 • (2 cm)2
a diameter of 4 cm is 12.56 𝑐𝑚2 .
= 3.14 • 2 cm • 2 cm
= 3.14 • 4 cm2
A = 12.56 𝑐𝑚2
