The first four (4) modules on the Principles and Methods of Teaching Accounting
discussed the theories about the teaching profession and factors that affects a person to
become a great accounting teacher. I must admit that Accounting is one of the hardest expertise
to master. Accounting requires a deep understanding and critical analyzation in dealing with
financial transactions that occurs in the economy. This paper looks at the strategic ways on how
to teach accounting subjects towards students around the world in order to supply the
knowledge needed to nurture their learnings. Though there are certain problems that arise on
the application of some principles in teaching accounting, these modules introduce integrated
strategies that triggers an accounting student’s critical thinking skills. Due to a diverse cultural
background of learners, this papers also suggest that an instructor must adjust his learning
styles in order to reach his students effectively.
Based on these studies, mostly in developing countries, one of the concerns in teaching
accounting courses is the method that focuses on “how” rather than using “why’ approach which
is seen to be more effective in teaching. It is important for an accounting instructor to know his
means on why he wants to teach accounting. This matters because an instructor’s principles
and beliefs in education can have an impact on the learning of his students. For some who is
planning to enter the academe, it is important that they learn their own philosophies, because
that will guide their professional actions through the events and issues that teachers face daily.
If I want to teach accounting subjects in the future, I want my students to appreciate the
usefulness of accounting in their lives; the relevance of accounting in the economy and how we
are a great help in the industry. That would encourage them to become excited on the learning
they will be having everyday in the class. Students have different levels of learning and I think
that those who are slower than others will still have a chance to exhale in this field. They only
need proper guidance and training to foster students to reach their full potential. Since a learner
is in control of their personal freedom and choice, responsibility is the focus. Motivation is
needed for learners to do well in learning.
In my experience in my almost 4 years of studying accounting, this is far more different
from the intended course that I took when I was a senior high school student who graduated
from STEM strand. In my first year in college as an accounting student, I feel like I was so
behind my co-students because they participate well in class knowing that they have basic
knowledge in accounting and the fact that they mastered it previously in their senior years as
ABM students in their senior years in high school. However, my persistency helped me
overcome my disadvantages and I learned little by little until somehow, I can finally relate with
the lessons that we are having in class. I think that the principle of Humanism is applicable on
this experience, because as a learner, I control my own destiny. Seeing those disadvantages, I
have from my classmates could discourage me from pursuing this course, yet I believed in
myself, and I continue to learn and exert more effort until I see myself improving from what I was
before.
I think what I can point out from my experience as an accounting student is that our
principles really matter, and it will take us somewhere in the future if we stick to that principle.
That will give us strength on the times that we think we cannot survive something, and we only
need to look back on these principles and have reason to continue what we are doing because
we have a dream to catch. Our instructors also plays a relevant role in our lives as learners
because their beliefs and eagerness to help us achieve our ultimate is one of the key factors
why a lot of students can survive the rough journey of an accounting student in college.
