2.0 INTRODUCTION

Kigozi and family mixed farm was initiated in November 2019 by Kigozi Stephen with ultimate
aim of changing the lives of my family after returning from UAE as a migrant worker(cargo
loader) with Trans-guard Security group for 4 years. From the individual situation analysis and
publications, it was found that Nakifuma county is characterized by a low population density with
50 persons per KM2, with high part of the population living below the poverty line with 60.4%.
Out of the total population, it was found that 80 – 85% is primarily engaged in agriculture.

Nakifuma county in Mukono district has distinctive crops and livestock production areas. Some
crosscutting constraints are; unstable and low prices of agricultural commodities, poor storage and
infrastructure for value addition, declining soil fertility, high post-harvest losses, expensive
agricultural inputs and lack of irrigation facilities.

After noticing these constraints, the kigozi family selected the system entry point as being
matooke and piggery, to address issues of nutrition, food security, income and natural resource
management. By going through a series of farmers’ meetings and trainings on agriculture, the
demand and desire to start mixed farming just doubled from what was expected. During the
initiation stage of the program, a number youths and women who are the most vulnerable of
poverty, hunger, malnutrition continued to show interest to provide cheap labour at the farm.

In December 2022, the farm experienced a double tragedy that the matooke plantation was heavily
hit by hail stones and most of the plants were damaged. On top of the piggery project was equally
hit by swine fever which swept more than 50 pigs which drastically affected the expectations of
seeing a livelihood improvement of my family.

Kigozi and family mixed farm having been affected by the losses chose to start afresh with the
addition of poultry farming in 2023 and having plans of intercropping colonal coffee (KR) with
the matooke as a way of improve the income of the family and the community who offer labour.
Therefore a high market potential, ranging from human consumption of people around Mukono
and Kampala,a percentage of the proceeds from the above investments will be directly ploughed
back into the business.

Goal: To ensure sustainability and livelihood improvement

Mission: To promote community sustainability and improving the standards of living of each family .

the mixed farming sector in Uganda. Reasons for this have ranged from the recognition of market
opportunities for supplying farmers with improved quality varieties and the increased support in

5.0 BUSINESS JUSTIFICATION

By promoting the mixed farming approach will imply that farmer’ levels of income, their health
and nutrition level, food security, literacy, and natural resource management/NRM will be
improved in the long-run. This is justified by the fact that there’s now already market for farm
products, and the demand for animal, bee and poultry products mukono even in the neighboring
districts.

able to put monies into their pockets after working at the farm and this is likely to help them
improve their standard of living.
