Physics Experiment: Heat Conduction

The document outlines an experiment to determine the rate of heat conduction through metal wires of varying lengths. It provides instructions to measure the time taken for wax to fall off the end of wires with lengths from 3cm to 7cm that are heated at one end. The results are to be presented in a table and graph to show the relationship between length and time.

CLASS:

Title: HEAT

Aim: To determine the rate of conduction of a metal of various lengths.

Apparatus and materials : metal(sizes 3cm, 4cm, 5cm, 6cm, 7cm), stopwatch, candle, wax, lighter, pliers

Diagram:

Instructions :

1. Obtain a wire of lengths 3cm,4cm, 5cm,6cm,7cm

2. Cut small pieces of candle wax and attach it to one end of the wire of each.

3. Light the candle and place the opposite end of the 3cm wire in the direct flame.

4. Using the stop watch, take the time for the wax to fall of the end of the wire.

5. Repeat for the other four wires to obtain their timings.

6. Present data obtained in a table and sketch a graph to show the relationship between length and time.
