What is genre?
movie genre is a stylistic category that organizes movies based on the narrative elements that drive the story
arc. Genres are based on criteria such as the setting, characters, plot, mood, tone, and theme. The main genre
category is based on where the majority of the content lands.
The different “types” of books and movies
that tell us what to expect from the story
are called genres. For example, a comedy
movie will have a lot of jokes and funny
scenes, while a horror movie will have
scary characters and suspenseful scenes

Introduce the project
You will be recreating a movie poster that transforms its original genre into a
distinguishably different genre. You will create 3 “blueprints” different ideas for your
poster today. Then next class time, you will be introduced to Pixlr. Day 2 and day 3 will
be working on these projects. Then the last 15 minutes of class, we will get into small
groups and talk about our posters.
We will be using Chromebooks for this project, so make sure you come to class with them charged.
Day 1: Use this space to jot down ideas. Pick 3 movies you like, then write down a new
genre for that movie. In the bigger space below the new genre, “sketch” ideas. Nothing needs
to be perfect, but some things to keep in mind are: font, colors, and emphasis on at least 1
subject.
Day 2: We will introduce Pixlr. You will be learning new vocabulary, so bring a paper and
pencil to class for notes. Things we will go over in Pixlr are: canvas space, masking, transforming
tool, layers, gradient, text tool, and copy + paste images into the canvas space.
Day 3: Finish up the poster designs in Pixlr. Be ready to share these in a small group 15
minutes before class ends.
