I. Introduction
Hue is a city located in the central coastal region of Vietnam. It serves as a central
hub for the North-South transportation axis, accommodating all forms of transport
including air, rail, road, and waterways. Hue shares its border with Laos to the
west, the East Sea to the east, Quang Nam Province to the southwest, the city of
Da Nang to the south, and Quang Tri Province to the north. This region is also
closely associated with many resounding historical events of our nation and was
once the capital of the Nguyen Dynasty emperors.
With a favorable geographical location and diverse transportation system, Hue has
now become one of the most famous cities in Vietnam and one of the three major
tourist regions of the country. Regardless of the rapid urbanization in Southeast
Asia, the ancient royal city enchants tourists with poetic landscapes, a tranquil
atmosphere, religious traditions, hundreds-year-old historic architecture, and
significant highlights of UNESCO-recognized tangible and intangible cultural
heritages.
II. Body
2.1. History & Geography
2.2.1. History
In 1306, after the marriage between Princess Huyen Tran (Tran Dynasty) and
Cham king Che Man, the land of Chau O and Chau Ly (including Quang Tri, Thua
Thien Hue and a part of northern Quang Nam today) was named is Thuan Hoa. In
the second half of the 15th century, during the reign of King Le Thanh Tong, the
place name Hue first appeared. In 1636, Lord Nguyen's palace was located in Kim
Long (Hue), and in 1687, it was moved to Phu Xuan - present-day Hue Citadel. In
the early years of the 18th century, Phu Xuan became the political, economic and
cultural center of Dang Trong. Until 1788 to 1801, Phu Xuan became the capital of
the Tay Son dynasty.
The ancient capital of Hue at that time played an extremely important role as the
political nerve center of the whole country. A court was built very elaborately and
headed by tyrannical kings, the apparatus and temples in the capital were also
designed and stabilized.
From 1802 to 1945, Hue was the capital of a unified Vietnam under the reign of 13
Nguyen kings. Also here, the capital city was formed with historical and cultural
architectural works of typical value, such as the Hue citadel, especially the Citadel
area (with 253 works), 7 clusters of mausoleums of 9 Nguyen kings, Nam Giao,
Ho Quyen, Hon Chen temple.
On the North bank of the Perfume River is an architectural system representing the
authority of the Nguyen centralized regime, including 3 citadels arranged
symmetrically on a vertical axis running from the South to the North.
Each Nguyen King's mausoleum reflects the life and resting process of its resting
owner: Gia Long mausoleum is rustic but majestic amidst the rolling mountains
and forests; Minh Mang's mausoleum was skillfully embellished to show his
majesty amidst the mountains, forests, lakes and ponds. He was a talented
politician and had the dignified personality of a disciplined poet; The solemn Thieu
Tri mausoleum shows the melancholy in the middle of a desolate field; Tu Duc
mausoleum is poetic and lyrical...
UNESCO recognized the Hue Monuments Complex as a cultural heritage of
humanity, partly affirming the global value of this place. The Hue Monuments
Complex represents unique artistic achievements, especially in this place there are
masterpieces created by human hands. The ancient capital of Hue is also a symbol
of a typical architectural complex of an important historical period and important
events that greatly influenced the nation's historical figures.
2.1.2. Geography
The city is located in central Vietnam on the banks of the Huong River, just a few
miles inland from the East Sea. It is about 700 km south of Hanoi and about 1,100
km north of Ho Chi Minh City. Hue is bordered by Quang Dien District and South
China Sea to the north, Huong Thuy town to the south and east, Phu Vang District
to the east and Huong Tra town to the west. Located on the two banks of the
Huong River, north of Hai Van Pass, 105 km from Danang, 14 km from Thuan An
Seaport and Phu Bai International Airport and 50 km from Chan May Port. The
natural area is 71.68 km2 and the population in 2012 is estimated at 344,581
people. As of 2021, after the territorial expansion, the city has a total area of
265.99 km2 and the population is 652,572 people
Located near Truong Son mountain range, Hue city is a plain area in the lower
reaches of the Perfume and Bo rivers, with an average altitude of 3–4 m above sea
level and often flooded when the river's headwaters Huong has medium and large
rainfall. This plain area is relatively flat, although there are alternating hills and
low mountains such as Ngu Binh mountain and Vong Canh Hill.
2.2. What makes this place famous
2.2.1. The Cultural Heritage of Hue
Hue, at present, proudly possesses 5 cultural heritages recognized by UNESCO.
These include The Complex of Hue Monuments (1993), Court music - Vietnamese
Royal Music (2003), Woodblocks of Nguyen Dynasty (2009), Royal documents of
Nguyen Dynasty (2014), and Royal Literature on Hue Royal Architecture (2016).
The Complex of Hue Monuments
Within nearly 400 years (1558-1945), Hue was successively the Capital city under
9 reigns of Nguyen Lords in Dang Trong, the Capital city of Tay Son Dynasty and
then the Capital of the united country under the reign of 13 Emperors of Nguyen
Dynasty. The Complex of Hue Monuments is a diverse royal architecture including
citadels, palaces, tombs, shrines, pagodas, urban areas, gardens, etc. Monuments
comprehensively reflect Eastern capital in its heyday. Despite the war, natural
disasters and time, they remain comparatively intact and are being well-conserved
thanks to the efforts of Vietnamese and international friends. Therefore, when
talking about Hue, people often mention and think of the golden palace, the
splendid temples, magnificent tombs, or poetic natural landscapes.
Court music - Vietnamese Royal Music
Hue is the birthplace of Royal Court Music, a unique form of traditional
Vietnamese court music. This delicate and refined art has been performed for
centuries and was recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2003.
It reflects the intricate social structure and rituals of the imperial court. Today,
scholarly music is not only performed in its homeland but also introduced in many
countries in the world. Court music is one of the main art forms performed in Hue
festival seasons.
Woodblocks of the Nguyen Dynasty
Under the Nguyen Dynasty, due to the need to popularize social standards,
compulsory articles of law, Kings’ and Lords’ lives and careers and historical
events... the Imperial Court allowed to carve many sets of history books and
literature work for delivering. During the past activities, it helped to form a special
type of record, which is the woodblocks. These are the unique original records. On
30th July 2009, the woodblocks of the Nguyen Dynasty were recognized as a
World Documentary Heritage at the meeting of the International Advisory
Committee (IAC) of UNESCO). They became the first entry of Viet Nam in the
list of UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme.
Royal documents of the Nguyen Dynasty
Archives are administrative archives of the Nguyen dynasty, the last feudal
dynasty of Vietnam and in the region that lasted from 1802 to 1945. The collection
reflects all aspects of the history of Vietnam society at the time and the diplomatic
relations of Nguyen dynasty with other countries all over the world. The collection
is also the only original administrative record that contains autographs of ten
Nguyen Emperors. The collection is now being preserved in the National Archives
Center No.1 of the State Records and Archives Department of Vietnam.
Royal literature on Hue royal architecture
At present, Hue is still home to 2.967 poem boxes carved on wood, 146 painted
enamel poem boxes and 88 ceramic poem boxes and distiches. Of all nominations,
the Royal literature on Hue royal architecture was excellently assessed in terms of
defense. These are unique documentary heritages, the original and only version
having global values remained in Vietnam. It shows spectacular historical, cultural
and artistic messages of Vietnamese modern history period. It is a system of
priceless artworks, a great historical document museum, and a heritage of precious
values that needs to be further conserved.
2.2.2. People
Hue people are incredibly friendly and accommodating.
It is evident right away that Hue people are incredibly friendly and
accommodating. The people of Hue are always happy to greet travelers. People in
Hue will always be concerned and supportive of you when times are difficult.
Hue people are graceful, sophisticated, and elegant.
This is a very typical personality trait of Hue people. This personality trait is not
only expressed in daily behavior from family to work and public places. When we
arrive in Hue, there isn't the same amount of commotion as in cities like Ho Chi
Minh City, Hai Phong and Hanoi. We hear the kind, modest, and loving tones of
the Hue people in institutions, classrooms, and public spaces. In particular, the
image of a Hue girl with flowing ao dai and loose hair has become a symbol of
Vietnamese beauty.
Hue people live in discipline and order.
Entering Hue families, people will immediately feel that Hue people live very
disciplined lives from old to young, from men to women, all following a pre-
existing set of rules. The man in the family is respected and is the breadwinner of
the whole family. Fathers and husbands in the family have the right to decide
everything in the family. The opinion of the family and especially the father
greatly influences the choices of the children in the family.
Hue people live thrifty
Unlike in the South or the North, Hue people are influenced by a difficult life so
they are very diligent, industrious, hard-working and careful. Harsh weather,
many storms, unfavorable economic development, and erratic natural disasters
cause Hue people to always hoard food and especially money for when they need
it, and get sick. ... all create Hue's unique personality.
2.2.3. Festival culture
When traveling to Hue, we will experience two types of festivals: royal festivals
and folk festivals. Royal festivals often focus on ceremonies rather than festivals,
reflecting the ceremonial activities of the court. Folk festivals include many
diverse festivals such as the Hue Nam festival in Hon Chen according to Champa
beliefs, festivals commemorating the saints who founded the village, festivals
commemorating the ancestors of traditional craft villages…Unlike many other
festivals, Hue always retains its elegant and peaceful beauty. Everything still
preserves the religious and spiritual beliefs that have existed for hundreds of years.
Each festival expresses its cultural beauty, with the hope of bringing good luck to
everyone. During the holidays, at folk festivals, folk cultural activities take place
enthusiastically such as tug of war, wrestling, boat racing,... attracting the attention
of tourists. Hue Festival has been held since 2000, usually every two years.
