What makes sense of knowing oneself?
Have you ever thought about your purpose in life, your strengths, weaknesses, your ideal
personality, or the things you value most in life?
The great philosopher Aristotle once said, "knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom”. He
also added that your relationship with yourself is one of the most important relationships in your
life. So why do you think that Aristotle gave great emphasis on identity?
But first let us begin by describing identity. Identity is what a person is. What a person enjoys along
with everything that distinguishes them from others makes up their identity. Although easy to be
defined, finding your identity amidst ocean of people is a difficult thing to do. A thing that everyone
of us went through. As a teenager, I too struggle with identity. In this generation where social media
moves people, we, the digital citizens, tend to admire, idolize, and envy other person’s appearance,
abilities, and success. Because "social standards", we try to be like those people that we admire
instead of believing in ourselves and building our own identity. However, I must state that those
who are off their faces are the ones who have developed into persons.
In my personal experience, I don't ever give myself the extent of thought since I was so self-
conscious, and all I see about myself were my flaws. This is because my feelings are responses to my
ideas, and my thoughts could be unfavorable, so is my emotions. Remember, our emotional states
are reactions to the thoughts we are having, and as people, we possess negative notions in our
minds, and then we internalize them, which is the dilemma
Therefore, knowing oneself truly is important. If you know yourself, you can accept the personality,
traits, and abilities that build your identity. With this, you can have a clearer idea of your life's
purpose and be more motivated in becoming a better person, empowered to become who you want
to be, improve your weaknesses, and modify your opinions and views.
The question that everybody is waiting, “How do we self- identify?”, well, the answer depends on
you. But, let me just give you a single stepping stone. The first approach to achieving self-identity is
becoming aware of oneself. If we are self-aware, we could recognize the direction that our
perceptions and emotions are leading us and exert a certain ability to alter them as we go along. We
will have a hard time changing our lives for the better until we become self-aware.
Remember, you are all beautifully & uniquely you. Good morning, I am Joanna Maroto and thank
you for the opportunity to share my stance with you today.
