reached a beautiful
island where their
leader Brutus sprang
ashore onto a granite
boulder, the Brutus
Stone, and proclaimed
Here I stand

rest, and this
town shall be
called Totnes.

1
Start at the Information
Centre in the Town Mill.
Here you will fnd a
restored Victorian water
wheel and mill machinery,
a display on local mill
technology, and a small
exhibition showing the
development of the town.
The Image Bank and
Rural Archive upstairs
holds a growing collection
of photographs covering
various aspects of local
life dating back to the
19th century.
2
Make your way to The
Plains, once part of a large
tidal marsh. Many of the
buildings were originally
warehouses. A stone obelisk
commemorates William
Wills, explorer of Australia
and born here in 1834. The
two granite pillars which
originally stood between the
converted chapel and the
Dartmouth Inn marked the
gateway to Town Marsh
stretching to the south
towards St Peters Quay.
You can still see the
town coat of arms and
the date 1687. Opposite
is The Royal Seven
Stars Hotel dating
from the 17th century
and reputedly built
on the site of a
medieval hostelry.
What to see and do
Take a walk

Bring history to life and immerse
yourself in Totnes times past.
Discover the history, customs and
legends behind the old town facades.
Who were Burke and Wills?
William John Wills was
second-in-command
of the Burke and Wills
expedition, which was the
frst expedition to cross
Australia from south to north.
Unfortunately, both perished
on the return journey.
2010 commemorated 150
years since the start of
the ill-fated mission.

5
Look out for the 18th-
century Gothic house in
Bank Lane, and the imposing
Mansion of 1795, once the
grammar school and now used
for community education.
6
The Brutus Stone, set
into the pavement opposite
Atherton Lane, features in
legend as the place where
Brutus the Trojan, founder
of the British people, frst
stepped ashore.
7
The Elizabethan House
Museum is one of the fnest
restored Tudor town houses
in the country. Built in about
1575 for cloth merchant Walter
Kellond, it has twelve galleries,
a courtyard, and a herb garden.
It contains a wide range of
exhibits and a room devoted
to Charles Babbage who
originated the concept of
the computer. A study centre
for local and family history
deals with requests from all
over the world and Totnes
Museum Society organises
regular events.
8
Pass beneath the East
Gate Arch, once the gateway
to the medieval town and
faithfully reconstructed after
a devastating fre in 1990.
3
Totnes Bridge was designed
by the Devon architect Charles
Fowler. Constructed in 1828,
it replaced an earlier bridge,
the foundations of which can
be seen at low tide. It leads
to the attractive suburb of
Bridgetown, riverside walks,
Steamer Quay (for trips to
Dartmouth) and Vire Island,
named after the Normandy
town twinned with Totnes.
4
Returning to Fore Street,
walk up the hill taking time
to observe the rich variety
of architectural styles above
the shops. Many of these
properties were built for the
towns wealthy merchants in
the 16th and 17th centuries,
with slate-hung frontages
added later.
9
Climb the steps to the
cobbled Ramparts Walk,
following the line of the
old town wall behind St
Marys Church.
10
Totnes Guildhall was built
in 1553 on the ruins of the
medieval priory, founded in
1088. It was the heart of
the towns administrative,
legal and ceremonial life for
centuries, serving as court,
prison and meeting place. Still
in regular use, it has a unique
and unforgettable atmosphere.
11
The late 15th century
Parish Church of St Mary
is built of deep red Devon
sandstone and it is particularly
noted for its 120 foot tower
and stone roodscreen.
12
Returning to the High
Street, notice the house of
Nicholas Ball (now Barclays
Bank), a prosperous merchant
whose widow married Thomas
Bodley in 1586, using her
wealth to found his great
library at Oxford.
13
The covered pavement
arcade known as Butterwalk
was built in Tudor times to
protect dairy stalls from the
weather, whilst the covered
Poultry Walk opposite
sheltered poultry stalls.
14
At the 16th-century
Bogan House is the
Devonshire Collection of
Period Costume. Themed
Exhibitions change yearly.
15
Opposite, by the Civic Hall,
enjoy the Pannier Markets
held each Friday and Saturday,
and the Elizabethan Charity
and Craft Market on summer
Tuesday mornings.
16
At the top of the High Street
turn right into Castle Street
to Totnes Castle (English
Heritage) build by Judhael, the
11th century Norman overlord
of Totnes. From the ramparts
appreciate the castles superb
defensive position and enjoy
magnifcent 360 degree views.
17
Return towards the High
Street turning right into The
Narrows, a colourful area of
individual shops, and Rotherfold
Square, once the cattle market.
18
Turn left into Leechwell
Street then into the
attractive narrow pathway of
Leechwell Lane where you
fnd the ancient Leechwell,
a channelled natural spring
reputed to have healing
properties. From here you can

It is thought that part of the building dates from the 16th century but it has

1990s. A working waterwheel can be seen and inside the building part of
the mechanism which drove the millstones has been reconstructed.

The Guildhall was originally the Refectory (dining room) of
the Benedictine Priory, founded in 1088. It was rebuilt as the
meeting place of the Merchant Guild, the body of leading
citizens who ran the town, in 1553. Since then it has been
the home of the Town Council and over 600 mayors are
listed in gold leaf on the boards in the lower hall.
From 1624 to 1974 the building was used for the local
magistrates court, and the Town Gaol was in use until 1887.
See the original cells, where prisoners awaited trial and
punishment, then climb the 17th century stairs to the elegant
Council Chamber, with its
plaster frieze and the table
where Oliver Cromwell
sat in 1646. Admire the
ceremonial robes, most
of them still in use, in the
Mayors Parlour.
The Guildhall, peacefully situated on Ramparts Walk,
behind the busy High Street, is full of fascinating objects
and memories.
