Ellie McCrae – a 15-year-old troublemaker from Marcus’ school. Marcus describes her as sulky and scruffy.
She is a fan of the band Nirvana, and loves the lead singer, Kurt Cobain because he understands the awful
problems that teenagers face. Marcus admires her for her fearlessness. He is slightly afraid of her at first, but
gradually comes to adore her as she helps him deal with the bullies. Ellie is an important character in the
book because she provides Marcus with an image of a single parent family which functions well, although it
has its problems too. Through Ellie, he realises that there are many types of people in the world, and we just
have to make the best of those with whom we are involved.
Did Marcus like the idea of his mum talking to Will? What did Fiona tell Marcus when she came back
home?
Of course he didn’t like that his mother talked to Will. He used to think it was a great idea and used to be
excited for it, hoping it would eventually lead to them living in Will’s flat with Ned, and perhaps another
baby.
Marcus asked Fiona how it went as soon as she arrived at the house, and she told him it went okay, and
that Marcus was not able to see Will anymore. Even if Marcus did go to his house Fiona told him it would
be a waste of time because Will wouldn’t even open the door. This didn’t worry Marcus at all because he
knew how loud the buzzer was and wasn’t afraid to ring again and again.

that he had no idea who stole his trainers and make himself look stupid; or he could tell her everything
that happened and get into even more trouble with the group of bullies.
Who is Ellie McCrae? Why was Ellie waiting to see the headmistress? Who is Kirk O’bane?
Ellie is a sulky, scruffy girl from year 10 who hacked off her own hair and wore black lipstick. He
described her as ‘famous’ as she’s incredibly well-known for constantly getting into trouble. She was
waiting to see the headmistress because she was wearing a sweatshirt, against school dress-code, with a
photo of a bloke with scraggy hair and half a beard. Marcus thought he looked a bit like Jesus, except

more modern and with bleached hair. Marcus, unaware of any pop culture at all, didn’t have a clue who it
was so he asked Ellie who it was and what he did. She told him it was Kurt Cobain, but he understood her
incorrectly, and Ellie plays a joke with him and says that he plays football for Manchester United.
What happened at Mrs. Morrison’s office? What did Marcus do after leaving her office?
Their chat started off okay, but Marcus couldn’t help but lose his temper with Mrs. Morrison once she
started talking about ‘survival strategies’. He was frustrated that she was talking to him as if he was dumb,
telling him to try to keep out of their way, and when he told her that he has tried, she tells him that maybe
he hasn’t tried hard enough. This infuriated Marcus because he decided that the headmistress, like the rest
of his school, didn’t like him and he didn’t understand why. So, he got up and left.
Why did Will like driving around London? Why was he driving to Waitrose this morning? Who did he see
walking down Upper Street? What did Will do?
Will loved driving because he liked to imagine himself as a man in a hurry, allowing himself to become
angry and frustrated which was a rare occasion. He also loved knowing his way around and being
swallowed up in the flow of the city’s life. You didn’t need a job or a family to be able to drive around
London; you just need a car, and Will had a car. He was also able to play music at a higher volume than in
his flat as his neighbours would be furious. He decided to drive to Waitrose just to be able to sing
‘Nevermind’ at the top of his lungs and he couldn’t do that at home.
He saw Marcus ambling down Upper Street for the first time since he’d bought him trainers and wasn’t
particularly keen on seeing him right now. However, he felt a little surge of affection for him yet not
enough to make him want to stop the car or even beep his horn.
What happened at exactly 4:15p.m.? What did Marcus ask Will? What did Marcus discover about Kirk
O’bane?
At exactly 4:15p.m. Marcus rang Will’s doorbell, but Will wasn’t going to answer it. Marcus rang three
times so Will turned off countdown and put on a Nirvana CD, hoping that it would drain out the noise of
the doorbell. By the ninth track, Will gave up. He opened to door to Marcus asking him if he could take
Marcus and his friend to a football match since his mum wouldn’t do it as she doesn’t like football.
Marcus tells Will that he’s started to like football because of Kirk O’bane, the guy who looks like Jesus,
but Will lets him know that there’s no one of that name, or of that description, who plays for Manchester
United. They find out that he means Kurt Cobain and Marcus realises that Ellie tricked him.
What type of help did Marcus need? Could Will help him?
Will realises that Marcus didn’t need a father figure, he just needed help to be a kid, not an adult. Will
knows he couldn’t tell Marcus to grow up, or how to live with a suicidal mother, but he could tell him that

What happened the following morning at school when Marcus bumped into Ellie at break time?

When Marcus bumped into Ellie at the vending machine, he told her the truth about Kurt Cobain and how
he’s actually the singer of Nirvana.
What did Marcus think about Nirvana’s music? What did Ellie and her friends think about Marcus?
Marcus told Ellie that “it’s a bit of a racket” but said it had a good beat. He also remembered that Will told
him about some important meaning that the album cover had, but he couldn’t remember what he said.
Ellie and her friend seemed to find Marcus amusing, they laughed at his comments and engaged in banter
with him, which Marcus found both confusing and thrilling. Despite some teasing, Marcus felt a sense of
validation from the interaction, as it was the longest conversation he’d had with anyone at school in a
while.
What happened the next day when Marcus saw Ellie and her friend Zoe? Who did they look for at lunch
time?
Marcus found them again at the vending machine and asked Ellie about her boyfriend since Will had
scared him into thinking that her boyfriend would squash him like a bug. Ellie and Zoe went looking for
Marcus at lunchtime and declared to the whole room that Marcus was their friend, shocking his
classmates.
Why had Will been trying not to think about Christmas? Where did he spend Christmas in the end?
Will had initially been trying to avoid thinking about Christmas, planning to spend it alone watching
videos and smoking joints. He felt that such a solitary celebration didn’t seem very festive or meaningful
realising that the way he spent Christmas sent a message to the world about his life situation, and he didn’t
want to convey the message that he was completely isolated. Despite telling himself that he didn’t want to
spend Christmas with Marcus and Fiona eating a nut roast and singing carols with his eyes closed, he
accepted Marcus’ invite to spend Christmas day with them.
Who was at Marcus’ home for Christmas? Describe the presents Will gave Marcus and Fiona and the
presents he received from them.
Unexpectedly, it wasn’t just Marcus and Fiona, but Clive, Marcus’ dad, Lindsey, Clive’s girlfriend, and
Lindsey’s mum were also there. Will gave Marcus a vinyl copy of Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’ album because
he didn’t own a CD player, and a Kurt Cobain T-shirt, so he could impress Ellie. Will gave Fiona a pretty
groovy and pretty expensive plain glass vase because she’d complained after the hospital business that she
didn’t know what to do with the flowers. In return, Marcus gave Will a crossword-solver’s book to help
with his countdown addiction, and Fiona gave him The Single Parent’s Handbook as a joke.

While Marcus was receiving gifts from his parents, Will observed the thoughtful and gracious way that
Marcus reacted to his presets, which made him realise that Marcus was a good kid. Marcus was grateful
for the joyless pile of presents that Fiona gave Marcus, a hairy and baggy jumper, a couple of books and
some piano music.

Why did Marcus think it was good having a mum and dad who didn’t decide things together?
Marcus feels he gets the best of both worlds at Christmas because he got things like jumpers and sheet
music from his mum, but he also got fun things like computer games and other fun stuff. He also says that
if they had Christmas together, just the 3 of them then it would be pretty boring and now it seems more
like a party, the more the merrier.
What happened when Suzie came round with Megan? Why was it one of the most exciting things Marcus had
ever seen in real life?
When Suzie came round, it created an awkward atmosphere, especially for Will as he hadn’t seen Suzie
since the Marcus told Fiona the truth. Will stood up, then sat down, then stood up again, then he went red,
then Fiona told him to not be so pathetic, so he sat down again.
What happened when Will wanted to leave? What made Suzie and Fiona laugh?
Fiona tells him that Suzie has a right to express her anger. Marcus tells everyone that it’s not fair because
Will is his friend and he’s the one who invited him, so he should be the one to tell him when to go home.
When things began to heat up and Marcus starts pointing the blame towards everyone else, telling them to
remember how he even met Will in the first place, Will lightens the mood by saying it was Marcus’ fault
for throwing a baguette at a duck and killing it. Suzie and Fiona start to laugh and Will eventually sits
back down.
How did Will describe Rachel? Why had he never wanted to fall in love? Why was he almost sure Rachel
was about to make him very miserable?
Will says Rachel looked like the Laura Nyro from the cover of Gonna Take A Miracle. He also says she’s
nervy, glamorous, Bohemian, clever and with lots of long, unruly hair. Seeing his friends fall in love had
always seemed unpleasant to Will, with all of the loss of sleep and weight, unhappiness when
unreciprocated, and the dippy happiness when it all worked out. He felt like people in relationships can’t
control themselves or protect themselves and unable to occupy their own space. People who can’t rely on
materialistic things to make them complete. Will was a realist.
The conversation between Will and Rachel was dying out, Will could tell that he wasn’t interesting
enough to her, especially after telling her he knew the man because he bought weed from him. Will
decided to mention Marcus when Rachel turned to talk to the person sitting on her other side. He knew he
needed to talk about something that would reel her back into a conversation with him again. Knowing that
the most interesting thing in his life right now was Marcus, he decided that he was going to mention him
a64b0469ff35958ef4ab887a898bd50bdfbbe91a-10278699
Rachel interpreted that Marcus was Will’s son and told him about her own son, Ali. She asked him if
Marcus’ mother was also at the party, and Will told her that they don’t live together, and Rachel said that
Ali’s father didn’t even live in the same country. Although Will never actually lied to Rachel about
Marcus, he didn’t correct her even though he knew that she thought Marcus was his. The only truth he
told was that Marcus’ mother was indeed called Fiona.
Where did Marcus spend New Year’s Eve? Who was there? Why was Ellie embarrassed? What did Marcus
learn about Ellie’s parents?
Marcus was at Suzie’s house for a New Year’s party, and Ellie was also there. Marcus asked her where her
mother was, and she was embarrassed to tell him because she was dancing. When looking at the people
dancing, Marcus saw a woman punching the air with her fists and shaking her hair, while everyone else
were only tapping their feet, looking embarrassed with themselves, so he knew that the first woman was
Ellie’s mother. Marcus asked her if she liked her parents and she said that they’re all right and that they
don’t live together.
What did Marcus think when Ellie asked him if he had had a good 1993? What did he tell Ellie when she
asked him why it had been such a shit year? What did Ellie tell Marcus?
Marcus only took a moment to realise that 1993 hadn’t been a good year after having moved schools, the
hospital stuff, the other kids bullying him. Marcus didn’t really want to tell Ellie what had happened just
in case she told everyone at school, so he simply said that horrible things happened, but Ellie guessed it.
Why did Marcus understand when he was talking to Ellie why his mum chose her friends?
His mum had conversations which moved and where each thing the other person said lead you on
somewhere instead of sticking with people who she just happened to bump into, wore the same clothes, or
supported the same football team.
They were at an amusement arcade at the Angel playing video machines. It was a suitably nightmarish
setting for the difficult conversation Will and Marcus were going to have as there were sirens, tramps,
explosions, and epileptic lights.

What did Will tell Marcus about Rachel that made Marcus pay attention to him? What did Marcus ask Will?
What did Will answer?
Marcus finally paid full attention to Will when Will told him that he fancied Rachel and wanted her to be
his girlfriend. Marcus asked him how he knew, and Will told him that he just felt it in his guts.
What did Marcus tell Will about Ellie? How did Marcus know he wanted her to be his girlfriend?
Marcus told Will that when he first met Ellie, he didn’t know immediately that he wanted her to be his

girlfriend but that it developed over time. Marcus wants to be with Ellie more on their own, tell her things
before telling Will and Fiona, and he doesn’t want her to have another boyfriend. He doesn’t really mind
if he touched her or not as long as he had all those things.
Where did Rachel live? Describe her house. What happened at Rachel’s house?
Rachel lived just up the road from Camden Lock, in a tall, thin house full of books and old furniture and
sepia photographs of dramatic, romantic Eastern European relatives. Marcus and Will both met Ali and
were left alone while Rachel and Will went downstairs. 10 minutes later, they heard a door slam and
realised that Marcus had left.
Why had Marcus left Rachel’s house? What happened when Will found him?
Ali had threatened Marcus, saying that if Will and Rachel go out, Marcus is dead. Marcus tried to change
the subject and asked to play Ali’s computer games, but Ali reiterated that he would he didn’t like this
situation, which lead to Marcus leaving the house.
Why was running away from Rachel’s house the best thing that Marcus could possibly have done?
It would have been embarrassing to go downstairs and tell them that Ali was a psycho who was on the
verge of cutting off Marcus’ arms and legs.
Why did Ellie ask Marcus if he was going cross-eyed? What happened when Marcus was waiting for Ellie
and Zoe outside the newsagents?
Marcus tried to practice a trick that he’d learnt from Will but him twisting his neck so he could gaze into
her eyes, but he just looked crazy. When he was waiting outside, Lee Hartley and his mates called Marcus
a pervert and asked if he knew what the cards in the window were all about. One of them then removed
Marcus’ glasses and put them on. Ellie and Zoe emerged from the shop, Ellie threatened them, hit one of
them and scared them off.
How did Marcus feel after the incident at the newsagents? Why did Will fear for him? What did he tell
Marcus?
24 hours later, Marcus was still buzzing and was even more smitten than before. Will feared for Marcus
because he felt it would be a mistake to view Ellie hitting the boy as evidence that she liked him and that
it may be the opposite that while he relied on a teenage girl to defend him, he was unlikely to be a catch
for anyone. Will told him that their relationship looks more like pet and owner more than boyfriend and
girlfriend.
a64b0469ff35958ef4ab887a898bd50bdfbbe91a-10278699
Rachel couldn’t believe what she was hearing, it was too confusing for her to understand, and she had to
ask Will multiple times to explain himself. Will told her everything there was to tell, except the reason he
had met Marcus because he faked having a son and joined SPAT. Rachel invited him back for a coffee,
and told Will that Marcus made him more interesting since she thought he was a blank person who didn’t
do anything, wasn’t passionate about anything, didn’t have much to say.

April Fool’s Day is celebrated on the first of April every year. It’s tradition to play practical jokes on other
people and people often shout, “April Fools!” at the end. It’s celebr ated in various countries around the
world, although the customs and traditions associated with it may vary. Some historians speculate that
April Fools’ Day dates back to 1582, when France switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian
calendar, as called for by the Council of Trent in 1563. In the Julian Calendar, as in the Hindu calendar,
the new year began with the spring equinox around April 1. People who were slow to get the news or
failed to recognize that the start of the new year had moved to January 1 and continued to celebrate it
during the last week of March through April 1 became the butt of jokes and hoaxes and were called “April
fools.” These pranks included having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson
d’avril” (April fish), said to symbolise a young, easily caught fish and a gullible person.
When Marcus told Will, he asked if Marcus was worried about her but then told him that he can’t do
anything and that she probably wouldn’t even listen to him because he’s ‘nobody’. He told Marcus that he
should see him as a friend that’s a foot taller than him and that’s it.
Why didn’t Ellie seem terribly pleased to see Marcus the next day at school? What had happened?
Before Marcus got the chance to tell Ellie, he found out that Kurt Cobain had overdosed to try to kill
himself. Although Marcus tried to calm her down, Ellie told Marcus that he’ll try to do it again, people like
that always do because he wants to die, it wasn’t a cry for help, he hates this world. This obviously wasn’t
what Marcus wants to hear since his mum also tried to kill herself and he’s scared that she’ll try it again.
He knew that there was nothing in the world he could do about it even though he knew he should do
something to help Marcus out and look after him.

Why did Fiona want Marcus to go to Cambridge to see his dad? Did Marcus want to go?
Fiona told Marcus that his father had hurt himself by falling off of a window-ledge, so he had to go and
see him because his father was asking for him, but Marcus told her that he didn’t want to go while she was
feeling like this, but she promised him that she wasn’t going to do anything. Marcus had thought about
how it took his father to almost die to want to see Marcus and told his mother that his dad makes him sick.
Why did Marcus change his mind about going to see his dad?
Marcus had changed his mind once Ellie suggested going with him. He thought that she could go loose on
his dad.
What did Marcus see when he was travelling on the tube from Holloway Road Station to King’s Cross
Station?
There was only one other person in the carriage who happened to be reading a newspaper which Marcus
could see that there was a photo on the front page of someone he knew. He realised it was Kurt Cobain
and the headline stated that the rockstar was dead. He’d shot himself. Up until this moment, his mum and
Kurt Cobain had felt very different, his mum was a real person, but Cobain wasn’t, however all this
change now. This realisation made him sad for himself, for Ellie, for his mum, for Cobain’s wife and
child.
What was the plan for Rachel, Will and Fiona to go to a pub in Islington while Marcus was in Cambridge?
The plan was for them to have a drink and chat, then Will would excuse himself which would leave
Rachel and Fiona alone to talk about everything and hopefully cheer up Fiona.
What happened in the pub? Where did Fiona and Will go after leaving the pub? What did they talk about?
What did Will learn about Fiona?
Rachel hadn’t turned up and Fiona started crying out of nowhere. She said nothing was the matter, she’s
just like this. She told him she just needed someone to talk to and right now, he’s the only one there. He
suggested they go get something to eat so they went to Pizza Express. Will learnt a lot about Fiona, how
she didn’t want to be a mother, that sometimes she hated Marcus with a passion that worried her, her
inability to hod down a relationship, that her last birthday had scared her to bits because she hadn’t been
anywhere or done anything.
What did Marcus say in his answerphone message?
Marcus called from a police station in Royston and sounded little and frightened and lonely.
a64b0469ff35958ef4ab887a898bd50bdfbbe91a-10278699
Marcus finds the train journey very difficult, and Ellie exhausts him. She keeps threatening to press the
emergency button or to do things to anyone who looks at her. They sit in silence, and when the train stops
at Royston station, Ellie gets off suddenly. Marcus does not know what to do and he just follows her. They
walk into the town where they see a music shop with a big cardboard cut-out of Kurt Cobain in the
window. Ellie swears and says that the owner is trying to make money out of his death already. She breaks
the glass with her boot and takes the cut-out from the window. Some people approach them and eventually
they are taken to the police station.
What happened when Clive and Lindsey arrived at the police station?
Both Lindsey and Clive were in a bit of a state, Clive due to his collar bone, and Lindey because she had
to drive there, and she doesn’t like driving. His dad sarcastically stated that this was just what he needed,
and Ellie immediately stood up for Marcus and said that they’re friends and she came with him because
Marcus didn’t want to have a heart-to-heart with someone who doesn’t even understand him. Marcus tells
his father that even if his parents were still together, he would still be a useless father.
Who went with Will and Fiona to Royston? Why did Will think about the Dead Duck Day while he was
sitting in his car waiting for Fiona and Ellie’s mum?
Katrina, Ellie’s mum, was also going to go with them to collect their children. Will compares this day to
Dead Duck Day when Fiona tried to kill herself. He thinks that he enjoyed that day – not because of her
attempted suicide – more than this day, because before he was not involved with any of them but now, he
cares deeply about Marcus and Fiona.
Describe Katrina, Ellie’s mum. What did she say about her daughter?
Ellie's mum was an attractive woman in her early forties, youthful looking enough to get. away with the
tatty, faded blue jeans and leather biker jacket she was wearing. She had a shock of curly hennaed hair and
nice crinkles around her eyes and mouth, and she seemed to have given up on her daughter a long time
ago. She also said that she thinks her daughter isn’t right for anyone.
Why did Marcus agree to go back to Cambridge with his father? What did Marcus and his father talk about
when they arrived at Cambridge?
Clive confesses that he realises now that he should not have left Marcus and Fiona, but Marcus tells him
that it is not important anymore, and that he can always contact his dad if things get too bad. He tells
himself that he can cope now and is even stronger than his mother and Ellie are. He will always make sure
that he has a network of people to rely on. They talk a bit more, and Clive asks if Marcus would mind if
Lindsey and he had a baby. Marcus answers that he would like it and that he liked babies, which wasn’t
completely true but he knew the value of extra people around him.

What are the acrobatic displays Marcus refers to?
Marcus describes the people around him as acrobatic displays, explaining his newfound perspective on
relying on other for support. It doesn’t matter who they are, as long as they’re there for you, you’ll always
have people to balance off of.

Why did Rachel frighten Will?
Wanting Rachel so much frightened Will. she might decide that he was too much trouble, or worthless, or
no good in bed. She might meet someone else; she might come to the conclusion that she didn't want a
relationship with anybody at all. She might die, suddenly, without warning, in a car crash on the way back
from dropping Ali off at school.
He took Ali and Marcus out and he actually enjoys taking the boys out, and they have a routine; first they
have lunch in a burger bar, then they go to watch a film and finish with a milkshake at a different burger
bar. He also takes them to watch Arsenal sometimes. Ali is still a bit nasty to Marcus now and then, but
Will notices that Marcus is far more mature than Ali. He dresses better now and has his hair cut regularly,
and surprisingly, he is friendlier than ever with Ellie and Zoe.
The theory was that Marcus stated that he was bored, so Will tells Fiona to take out her piano music so
they can all sing to Both Sides Now but Marcus begs Fiona not to and shouts out that he bloody hates Joni
Mitchell. At that moment, Will knows that Marcus will be alright.
- The movie removes all references to Nirvana and instead Will introduces Marcus to rap music.
- The whole ending is completely different. In the movie, Marcus sings at school to help make his mother
happy, and in the novel he has to go and see his father with Ellie, Kurt Cobain dies and they get into trouble
with the police.
