How to Play Roll and Read
Here’s a quick and easy game to practice reading vocabulary.
Divide the class into pairs and give each set of children a Roll and
Read sheet, a dice, and two crayons. The first child rolls the dice. If
the dice says 2, then the child reads one of the words in the 2-
column and colors the box the word is in. The next child does the
same. If all the words in a number column have been filled, then
the child loses their turn. Continue until all the boxes have been
filled. The child with the most filed squares is the winner.

                     How to Play Tic-Tac-Toe
This is the traditional game played with a twist for the classroom.
Students take turns placing their markers on the grid, trying to
make a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line.
But in this version the students must also say or read the
vocabulary word (or make a sentence) in the grid square as they
   lay their markers down.
  I am not cold.
                                                           I am cold. Tom Jane
Be sure to give each set of children a score sheet so they can
keep track of who wins. In my classes I usually play ten rounds per
session, before ending the game. I might also just have the
children switch partners and go another ten rounds if they are
   really into it.

                  Scoring in Accumulative Tic-Tac-Toe
Accumulative tic-tac-toe is a way to inject some excitement into
the traditional game. Students play twelve rounds using the
attached score sheet. After the first round, the winner circles the
number one under their name, thus earning one point. The loser
crosses their number one out. Likewise, the winner of the second
round circles the number two, earning two points. If the round is a
draw, both players cross out their circles and neither receive points.
Continue playing until all twelve rounds are complete, and then
tally up the total at the bottom. The player with the most points
   wins.

If there is an odd number of students, three player play is also
possible with one player sitting out in rotation. The first player to sit
out is decided by a game of rock paper scissor, drawing straws, or
rolling a die. The remaining two students play the first round, the
winner awarded points in the normal way. The winner of the first
round though must sit out during the second round. In the event of
a draw all three students must once again randomly choose who
will sit out. They continue in this way until all rounds are completed.

                    How to Play Concentration
In concentration students try to match pairs of cards. Shuffle all
the cards and then place them face down on the table. Each
student takes turns turning over two cards at a time. They MUST
read aloud what it says on the cards. If the cards match, the
student keeps the cards. If they don’t match, they turn them over
again. The student with the most cards at the end of the game
   wins.
For young classes (of up to 12 students), I often play with the entire
class together. We sit in a circle and take turns turning over the
cards. It helps build confidence when weaker readers can
observe stronger readers. For older or more confident classes,
I usually split them up into pairs or groups of 3 to 4.
If you are looking to play using the vocabulary only (that is, just the
pictures), I recommend using the official student cards from OUP.
The concentration cards in these worksheet packets use sets of
   questions and answers only.
“I want “What do you want?” Wow!
   cheese.” Great job!
                             How many markers?
                                                 Four markers.

                      How to Play Dominoes
   Players: 2 to 6
   Preparation
To preserve the dominoes for future use, it is always best to
laminate them. However, for large classes it may be sufficient to
print out multiple sets, cut them out with your students, and then
give them away after the lesson.
   Set Up
Arrange the dominoes like a deck of cards, face down on the
table. After shuffling well, one student can deal 7 cards to each
player. The dealer then turns over dominoes from the deck until a
double domino appears (a domino where both pictures are the
same). Place the domino face up at the center of the table and
return the turned over dominoes to the bottom of the deck. Now
   choose the order of play.
   Rules
The first student adds a domino to either end of the double
domino, in any direction so long as the two dominoes are flush
with each other. A domino can only be added if the pictures
   match.
Dominoes can also only be added at either open end, with there
being never more than two open ends at a time. Once a domino
has been placed on the end of another domino, that end is
closed and no further dominoes can be added between them.
If you can’t play onto either end, you must pass your turn and
draw a domino from the deck. Students continue adding dominos
until someone runs out. The first person to use up all their dominoes
   wins the game.

The next student can now add a matching domino in any
direction, but only at either “open end”. Strategically, it makes no
   difference which direction is chosen.

   During the Game
Although playing games is a great way to increase the enthusiasm
of your students, the purpose of this game is to practice speaking.
During the game encourage students to say the name of the
word as they are joining it to another domino:
               S: “Skirt!”
They might also make a sentence:
               S: “She’s wearing a skirt.”

How to Play the Listening Game
    Number 11:
            1 2 3 4
 “Where’s she from?”
            5 6 7 8
                                                                        11 and 7
            9 10 11 12
           13 14 15 16
     Number 7:
  “She’s from South
      Korea.”
The Listening Game is played more or less the same as
concentration, but without the cards. Instead, the teacher writes
the numbers 1 through 20 on the board. Each number represents
a specific question or answer which are written on the teacher’s
game sheet. Shaded boxes represent questions and unshaded
boxes are answers. The number in the parentheses indicate the
   matching question or answer.
To play, students take turns calling out sets of two numbers. The
teacher reads the question or answer for each number just once.
If the student says a correct pair, they are awarded points, and
the two numbers they said are crossed off the board.

Instructions Everybody Up 2: Unit 8
This game can be played individually or in teams. To add some
excitement I award points by adding the two numbers of a
correct pair. For example, if a student correctly guesses that 11
and 7 are a matching pair, I award the student (or their team) 18
   points.
I play this way because even when teams or individuals are losing,
the children know that there can be a sudden change in fortune
and so are generally less reluctant to give up.
