CHOREOGRAPHY NOTES – ZIN 30

A NOTE FROM THE HOME OFFICE

Music is one of the most important, exciting, and fun parts of the Zumba
experience. Zumba Fitness respects all cultures, languages, religions and
worldviews and does its best to accommodate ZIN Members with resources we
can use proudly. Although there are some cultural variations and interpretations
that may vary, all ZIN song lyrics are carefully assessed, which includes the literal
and cultural meaning of each song. Everyone interprets these meanings
differently depending on their own experiences and perspective, which is why the
Home Office doesn't attempt to provide a single conclusive interpretation in
English. If you teach at a religious or family-oriented facility, please use extra
care with song selection and be aware of any sensitivities. All of our songs are
intended for mainstream audiences; for songs that may be considered ‘spicy’ you
will see a chili pepper. If you are still unsure, simply ask your fellow ZIN Members
on the Forum. You might even get some on-the-spot song translations!
ZIN 30 TRACK 1 HELLA DECALÉ

“Hella” means welcome, “decalé” refers to the “Côte d'Ivoire” or Ivory Coast (in France) dance
called “coupe decalé”. This French reggaeton (with some part sung in Creole!) welcomes us to
dance the decalé.

The singer says it’s not complicated: you just speed up a bit, move your body. I hope you feel the
heat, the one that gets the soul and heart to feel the vibes...

By now you already know that cumbia is a traditional Colombian rhythm (as well as one of the four
basic rhythms you learned at the B1 Instructor Training). “Nena” is a term of endearment used to
refer to a young woman or girl; this song is a cumbia dedicated to the dark-skinned “nena”. The
singer tells her “don’t be afraid, don’t be embarrassed” to dance.

ZIN 30 TRACK 3 LA VIDA ES UN CARNAVAL

This salsa has become a classic and has been performed by a multitude of Latin artists including
Victor Manuelle and, most famously, Celia Cruz. The name means life is a carnival and the song
is about having a positive outlook on life. It tells us that anyone who thinks that life is always cruel
needs to know that’s not true – there are only bad moments, and they will pass.

Towards the end, the singer addresses her message to people who complain, people who criticize,
people who contaminate us, people who start wars, people who mistreat…

“Ay, no hay que llorar…” = Ay, there is no need to cry…


“…y es más bello vivir cantando” = …it’s more beautiful to live singing
“…y las penas se van cantando” = …pains go away singing

between us in in the past/over. The singer says: we had a good time that night, but then I found out
you have someone else – you failed me and now (that you want me back) it’s too late.

It is rated “chili pepper” due to the sensual overtone (common in reggaeton) that may be
considered inappropriate for conservative settings.
