Repair Guide
This repair guide contains description on how to replace vital hardware pieces within the HM
hematology analyzer to reduce errors.
Removing/Cleaning the Wash Head
Cleaning the wash head periodically can help prevent salt from gathering on the wash head and causing
high blank values. The wash head can be removed and cleaned when troubleshooting high blanks or
flags indicating a dirty analyzer. The wash head can also be replaced when needed.
Procedure: Removing/Cleaning the Wash Head
Replacing the Peristaltic Pump Tube Assembly
After extended, long-term use, the peristaltic pump tube may eventually need to be replaced. The pump
tube may also need to be replaced if a clot is stuck inside the tube (Pressure Error), cracked, or
damaged.
How to replace the peristaltic pump can be found:
Newer Grey Pump Fixture Older Yellow Pump Fixture
HM5c New Pump (New Grey Pump Fixture)
HM5/HM2/HM2b/HMII Pump (Old Yellow Pump Fixture)
If a unit was serviced in repair recently, they will have the newer grey pump fixture. If a unit has not
been sent into repair at Abaxis in the past 2 years, then the unit will have the older yellow pump fixture.
All HM5c model have the newer grey pump fixture.

Replacing the Battery – White Models Only
When to Change the battery
• Self-Test Fail for Power Battery on white HM models
• Error message that says “Battery Voltage too Low” after a reboot
Items needed
• CR2032 (3V) battery
• 2.5mm Allen wrench
Procedure
1) Unplug the white/cream colored hematology unit. The unit needs to be completely off before starting.
2) Turn the unit around, and unscrew the 5 screws holding the main chassis in the back with a 2.5 mm Allen
wrench.
3) Pull the cover back about ½ an inch so that it’s no longer hooked under the face place. This will then lest
you pull the bottom of the chassis back enough to be able to access the battery.
4) Swap the battery, swing the cover back to its original position under the face place and put the 5 screws
back in. Then plug the analyzer back in and turn it on.

Replacing the Measuring Aperture
A measuring aperture should be replaced when you are unable to remove visible clots seen inside the
dilution chamber, persistently high blanks where cleanings do not help, and abnormal runs with 9,999
values for either the RBC or PLT on blanks or sample runs.
Items Needed
• Measuring Tube
• Reference Electrode
Procedure
1) Make sure the measuring tube and reference electrode are pressed tightly together, and that
the indentations on the side of the aperture is lined up properly so that the U-shaped metal clip
can slide on.
2) Make sure to drain the chamber before replacing the aperture, simply go to “Maintenance” >
“Cleaning” > “Drain Chamber”.
3) Open the side door of the analyzer.

7) Remove the U-Shaped metal clip then the old aperture. Push the U-Shaped metal clip into the
gooves of the new aperture. The U-shaped clip should fit into the indentations on the side of the
aperture, if it does not, you may have to twist the aperture and reposition the indentations so
that the clip can fit.
8) Push the new aperture into the dilution chamber, you may need to twist the aperture so that it
can be seated properly.
9) Attach the front tube (connected to valve 4) and top tube (connected to valve2) to the newly
replaced aperture, and reconnect the grounding wire.
10) Run a blank.
