Introduction:
Road safety and its improvement are vital for preserving user safety and
reducing road accidents and resulting injuries. One of the leading
organizations in this field is the International Road Assessment
Programme (iRAP).
iRAP provides a comprehensive framework for assessing and rating road
safety in an objective and innovative manner, helping guide efforts and
investments towards achieving effective road safety improvements.
Website Features:
The iRAP website is a valuable source of information and resources
related to road safety assessment and rating. The website offers a wide
range of tools, techniques, and guidelines that can be used to assess and
improve road safety. Additionally, the website includes a comprehensive
database that contains information about assessed roads, proposed
improvements, and their impact on user safety.
Uses and Benefits of iRAP:
iRAP is used to assess and rate existing road safety and identify areas
that require safety improvements. Effective utilization of iRAP helps
guide efforts and investments in improving infrastructure, road design,
and implementing other measures to enhance user safety.
Consequently, the use of iRAP enhances road safety and reduces fatal
road accidents and injuries.
In summary, the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) is a
valuable tool and a useful website for framing comprehensively and
objectively assessing and rating road safety. iRAP aims to provide a
unified framework for improving road safety worldwide by offering
applicable assessment standards, tools, and guidelines for enhancing
road safety.
2
This study aims to highlight the iRAP website, evaluate its features,
limitations, uses, and benefits. The website aims to provide
comprehensive and reliable information on road safety assessment,
rating, and improvements. The website offers powerful technological
tools and a vast database that contributes to data analysis, road
assessment, and guiding efforts to improve road safety.
Among the key features of the website is the availability of
comprehensive standards and guidance for road safety assessment,
rating, and improvements. Additionally, the website allows access to
case studies and reports that reflect experiences from different
countries and regions in enhancing road safety. With these resources
available on the website, professionals and experts in the field of roads
and safety can benefit from them in assessing and improving road safety
in their areas.
However, it is also important to note some potential limitations of the
website. The accurate collection of data required for road assessment
may be challenging in some countries or regions lacking reliable data
infrastructure. Additionally, the use of tools and techniques available on
the website may require advanced technical skills and additional
resources.

We conducted a survey on a road in Basra Governorate, starting from
the Mohammed Baqir Al-Sadr Bridge and ending at the Abu Mahdi Al-
Muhandis Intersection, as indicated in the image.
We performed calculations to determine the traffic volume and obtain
measurements of the road, including its dimensions, shoulders, drains,
and median.
After inputting the data into the iRAP website, we obtained the
following results, which indicate that the road safety is acceptable.
These results were obtained by considering all the precise and pre-
calculated details.
4
The first step: is to select the road type.
In this case, we have chosen the "Urban Expressway" as the road type
for our assessment because it accurately represents the type of road
that was examined.
The second step: involved entering the data related to the roadside
features based on the calculations conducted on the road.
This includes information about the dimensions and measurements of
the road's shoulders, drains, and median. The data input for the
roadside features is crucial for the road safety assessment and helps in
evaluating the overall safety of the road.
5
The third step: involved entering the data related to the mid-block
section of the road.
This was done by conducting a survey of the road and gathering
information about the type of mid-block and its characteristics.
This includes details such as the road width, pavement condition, lane
markings, signage, lighting, and any other relevant features that affect
the safety of the mid-block section.
Gathering accurate and detailed data about the mid-block is essential for
a comprehensive road safety assessment.
6
The fourth step involves entering all the data related to intersections,
including their types and details.
However, in the assessed section, no intersections were found, and
therefore, this field was not taken into consideration.
The absence of intersections in this particular section means that there
is no need to provide data or evaluate intersection-related factors for
this specific assessment.
7
The fifth step: involves calculating the flow on the road.
In this step, we need to determine the peak-hour traffic volume and
perform calculations to determine the Average Annual Daily Traffic
(AADT).
AADT represents the average number of vehicles that pass a certain
point on the road in a day.
To enter this data, you would need to provide the peak-hour traffic
volume (expressed in vehicles per hour) for the assessed section.
Additionally, you may need to input other relevant data related to traffic
patterns or fluctuations throughout the day, if available.
make sure to accurately calculate and enter the peak-hour traffic
volume to obtain a reliable AADT value for the road assessment.
8
The sixth step involves entering data related to the road speed and
vehicles.
In this step, you would need to provide information regarding the speed
limit of the road section being assessed. Additionally, you may need to
input data about the types of vehicles that typically use the road, such as
cars, trucks, motorcycles, etc.
It is important to accurately input the speed limit and consider the
different types of vehicles that use the road, as these factors heavily
influence the overall safety assessment. Providing detailed and precise
information on road speed and vehicle types will contribute to a
comprehensive evaluation of road safety.
9
The discussion and conclusion
Based on the data entered into the website, the following observations can be
made:
1. Vehicle safety: The star rating for vehicles is two and a half stars, which indicates
that the road is acceptable and safe for vehicle traffic.
2. Motorcycle safety: The star rating for motorcycles is two stars, which falls below
the acceptable range or is considered poor. This suggests that the road may not
provide optimal safety conditions for motorcycles.
3. Pedestrian safety: The star rating for pedestrians is excellent, as it received a high
rating of four and a half stars. This indicates that the road is well-designed and
provides a safe environment for pedestrians.
4. Bicycle safety: The star rating for bicycles is acceptable, implying that the road
provides an average level of safety for cyclists. However, it is noted that the width of
the bicycle lanes or the suitability of the cycling infrastructure may have affected
their rating.
Please refer to the attached image for a visual representation of the obtained
results.
