DESIGN PERCEPTION
INTRODUCTION Regular Forms
Design perception in architecture refers to how THE PALAIS GARNIER
people experience and perceive the built CHARLES GARNIER
environment through their visual senses. It involves
the manipulation of various elements such as
lighting, color, texture, and scale to create a
desired perception or impression in the viewer ' s
mind.
Studies show that different spaces evoke different Irregular Forms within
emotions, yet it is still hard to tell exactly how Regular Field
architecture induces them.

PHYSCIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF SPACES MUSEUM FRANK GEHRY
Space conveys both physiological and
psychological effects
• Illusion of size
• Large, unbroken spaces are serene, yet Regular Forms with
bold and dramatic Irregular Composition
• Small, broken spaces suggest delicacy and MOSQUE OF SULTAN

• Horizontal sections will heighten, lengthen
TRANSFORMATION OF FORM
the space
-All forms can be interpreted as transformations of

• Enhance User Experience by the manipulation of one or more dimensions by
• Evoke Emotional Responses the addition or subtraction of elements.
• Improve Funtionality
FORM AND ORDER
• FORM -refers to the shape, structure,
arrangement of a building or object -it is
the principle aspect by which we identify
and categorize forms
• SURFACES -in the transition of from shapes
to planes to forms of volume is the realm of
surfaces
• REGULAR FORMS -Regular forms refers to
Subtractive transformations
those whose parts are related to one
another in a consistent and orderly manner
• IRREGULAR FORMS -Are those whose parts
are dissimilar in nature and are related in an
inconsistent manner

EFFECT OF SPACES ON HUMAN MIND
-architecture can affect human behavior in
positive and negative ways, it can affect the
health and well-being of humans, as well as
human performance.
Each particular design has varying psychological
effects on each inhabiting individuals.
Dimensional transformations
-commercial designs with natural lighting or
varying views of nature affect the psychological
well being of individuals. Especially, designs with
open spaces with windows on every side of the
building
EFFECT OF SCALE
MONUMANTAL SCALE:
-buildings, structures, and memorials are
constructed in a scale larger than life as
social/cultural signal that the subject matter is also
larger than life.
HUMAN SCALE:
ABSTRACT FORM AND SPACES
-is the set of physical qualities, and quantities of
-abstract art uses a visual language of shape, form, information, characterizing the human body, its
color, and line to create a composition of which motor, sensory, or mental capabalities
may exist with a degree of independence from
visual reference.

REACTIONS TO SPACES
• SIGHT - Sight is an obvious one and
definitely the most used sense relating to
architecture.
• HEARING - sound is invisible but has the
power to change the space characteristics
we occupy.
• SMELL - the nose makes the eyes remember
• TOUCH - The sense of touch within a
building can create a feeling of either
relating or dislike.
EMOTIONS TOWARDS SPACES
-the impact a space has on a person ’ s mood is
huge: not how it looks, but how we feel it, through
the way it allows us to act, think, behave and
reflect.
