NOTES ON THE PATTERN

In this pattern, all sts are worked into the spaces between the sts of the
previous round. That means you go under the top of the sts and between the
posts of the sts, instead of crocheting into the top of the sts.

Every round is a different color. Every round, join the new color, work the
round, join with sl to the first st, and cut the yarn. To avoid having a lot of ends
at the same place, join the next row at a different space, this will give you more
room on the back for weaving in the ends.

Now about the join. I prefer to start with a slipknot and just work the first st (sc
or hdc) straight away. The alternative to this is to join the yarn to the previous
row with a sl, make a chain the height of the first st, and then work the first st.
Both methods are noted in the pattern. Note that starter chain and first st
always count as one st, there is no space between them.

THE PATTERN:
Tips for achieving the correct fit. Keep these in mind as you progress through
the pattern. Your half baubles should fit tightly, almost too tightly around the
bauble or ball. (Always be gentle when handling your bauble, you don’t want it
to break.) If you are using stuffing, make sure that there are no gaps between
the sts where the filling might escape.
- you can close the gaps between the sts by using a smaller hook (with looser
tension) or thicker yarn
- If your piece is a bit too tight or too loose, try adjusting your tension, or use a
bigger/smaller hook
- if your piece is way too tight or loose, start with 13 or 11 hdc’s in R1.
- if your piece comes out too long, as in, it covers more than half of the bauble,
skip R10 or R9-10.
- if your piece comes out too short, repeat R10 once more before R11 (1 extra
round), or repeat R8-9 once more before R10 (2 extra rounds).
The piece should look a little bit shorter than half of the bauble, sewing the two
halves together will pull them closed.

R1: (color A) into MR: ch2, 12 hdc, pull the gap closed,
and join with sl to first hdc (12)
Note: if MR is your nemesis: ch3, 12 hdc into 3rd ch
from hook , join with sl to first hdc (12)

R2: (contrast color) join with sc (or ch1, sc) between

any 2 hdc’s, *ch1, sc* rep in all spaces, ch1, join with sl
to first sc (12)
Note: the ch2+1st hdc counts as one st. Make sure you
have exactly 12 sc’s at the end of this round before you
continue

2/5
R3: (color B) join with hdc (or ch2, hdc) in any ch1
space, hdc in same space, *2 hdc* in all spaces, join
with sl to first hdc (24)

R4: (contrast color) join with hdc (or ch2, hdc)

between any 2 sts, hdc between all sts, join with sl to
first hdc (24)

R5: (color C) join with hdc (or ch2, hdc) between any 2 hdc hdc2tog hdc
sts, hdc2tog in the same and next space, hdc in the
same space,
*hdc in next space, hdc2tog in the same and next
space, hdc in the same space* rep to end, join with sl
to first hdc (36)

R6: (contrast color) join with hdc (or ch2, hdc)

between 2 hdc’s, 2 more hdc in the same space, *3
hdc in next space between 2 hdc’s* rep to end, join
with sl to first hdc (36)
Note: only work in the spaces between the 2 hdc’s,
skip the spaces on both sides of the hdc2tog’s

R7: (color A) join with hdc (or ch2, hdc) between the hdc hdc2tog hdc
1st and 2nd hdc of any 3 hdc cluster, hdc2tog in the
same and next space, hdc in the same space,
*hdc between 1st and 2nd hdc of the next 3 hdc’s,
hdc2tog in the same and next space, hdc in the same
space* rep to end, join with sl to first hdc (36)

3/5
R8: (contrast color) same as R6: join with hdc (or
ch2, hdc) between 2 hdc’s, 2 more hdc in the same
space, *3 hdc in next space between 2 hdc’s* rep to
end, join with sl to first hdc (36)

R9: (color B) join with hdc (or ch2, hdc) between 2nd
hdc hdc2tog hdc
and 3rd hdc of any 3 hdc’s, hdc2tog in the same
space and in the space between the 1st and 2nd hdc
of the next 3 hdc’s, hdc in the same space,
*hdc in the next space, hdc2tog in the same space
and the space between 1st and 2nd hdc of the next 3
hdc’s, hdc in the same space* rep to end, join with sl
to first hdc (36)

R10: (contrast color) join with a hdc (or ch2, hdc) in

any space between sts, sc in each of the next 2 2sc
spaces, hdc in all remaining spaces, join with sl to
first hdc (36)
Note: If you are using a ball without a top or stuffing
for filling, work hdc in all spaces

R11: (color C) join with sc (or ch1, sc) in the space

after the 2nd sc, sc in all spaces except for the last
one (the space between the 2 sc) (35)
Note: If you are using a ball without a top or stuffing
for filling, work sc in all spaces

Repeat R1-11 once more for the other half of the bauble
Note: Don’t forget to check the fit of your bauble before moving on to the
second half. See tips at the beginning of the Pattern section.

ASSEMBLY:
Weave in the ends. First, pull on the ends to tighten them, this will make the join
less visible in the finished piece. I like to weave my ends through 5-6 adjacent
sts (1), then turn back, skip the last st and weave through the rest of same sts
from the opposite direction (2). This will secure your yarn without having to
make a knot. Make sure not to pull too tightly on the yarn as it could wrinkle
your piece.

(1) (2)

Sew the two halves together. Cut about 1 m length of your contrast color and
thread it through a tapestry needle. Match the two halves together right side
out at the gap and start sewing the last round of sc’s together, following the 2
steps below.
After a couple of sts, fit it around your bauble or ball. Continue sewing and pull
the sts tight to close the gap between the two halves.

(1) (2)

If you are working with a bauble, weave the remaining yarn around the top of
the bauble and pull tight to close the gaps. Tie the two ends of the yarn
together to secure them and hide the ends under the crochet cover.
Add ribbon or some leftover yarn. Your Christmas Bauble is ready ♥
