Introduction/Background Information for the Learners

Examine the illustration below. What have you noticed?

 Musical Texture refers to the overall quality of a single layer of sound or


several layers of sound heard at the same time.

 It can be described as light or heavy. It can also be described as thin or


thick.

 The three kinds of musical texture are the monophonic, homophonic, and
polyphonic texture.

A. Monophonic Texture means “one sound”. This is the texture of a single


musical line without any form of accompaniment.

Example:
a. Singing solo
b. Solo performance without accompaniment

When the melody of the song was sounded alone without any
accompaniment the texture is thin.

B. Homophonic Texture
It is a single melodic supported by harmony through musical
instruments.

Example:
a. “Are You Sleeping, Brother John” with piano accompaniment
b. A song solo with guitar accompaniment

C. Polyphonic Texture
Polyphonic means “ many sounds”. This musical texture has three or
more musical dimensions.

Example:
a. Round Song
b. Partner Song
