BASIC MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Module - 4

1. Draw the p-v diagram of a diesel cycle and define the terms (i) Compression ratio, (ii)

Expansion ratio, and (iii) Cut-offratio related to the Diesel cycle

2. With the help of a neat sketch show the important parts of an internal combustion engine

3. Explain the MPFI system with block diagram. Also give its advantages

4. Give the concept of hybrid engines

5. An engine working on Diesel cycle has diameter 150 mm and stroke 200 mm. The

clearance volume is l0 % of the swept vo_lume. Determine the compression ratio and air

standard efficiency of the engine if the cut-off takes place at6o/o ofthe stroke.

6. Sketch the P-v and T-s diagram of a Carnot cycle and List the processes

7. In an air standard Otto cycle the compression ratio is 7 and compression begins at 35oC,

0.1MPa. The maximum temperature of the cycle is 1100oC. Find i) Heat supplied per kg

of air, ii) Work done per kg of air, iii)Cycle efficiency Take Cp = 1.005 kJ/kgK and

volume is 20% of the swept volume. Determine the compression ratio and air standard

efficiency of the engine if the cut off takes place at 10% of the stroke?

33. A petrol engine takes air at 100 kPa and 300 K. Determine the air standard efficiency of

the engine if the clearance volume is 10 % of that of cylinder volume. Also find the

maximum pressure if the maximum temperature is limited to 600 0C.
