2. AIRWORTHINESS LIMITATIONS
This section is FAA approved and specifies the inspections, and other maintenance, which are
required under 14 CFR 43.16 and 91.403, unless an alternative program has been FAA
approved.

There are “No airworthiness limitations associated with this type design change”.

3. DESCRIPTION
3.1 General
The Arriel 1 Cycle Counter is Turbomeca validated as a cycle counting aid system for the
Arriel 1 engine. It is programmed with the latest cycle counting procedure from Turbomeca.
Any future revisions to the software can be installed in the field with the AKV Ground
Support Equipment (GSE) Programming Kit P/N CC-GSE sold separately. The GSE is also
used to reset the running totals for Ng, Np engine starts, flight time and engine run time
such as when the cycle counter is installed in an existing operational helicopter or during
module or engine change. It is up to maintenance personnel to make sure that any values
programmed into the cycle counter are accurate and are the most current.

3.2 Cycle Counter Installation

The enclosure is mounted on the co-pilot’s side pedestal below the instrument panel. It
obtains the Ng and Np signals by connection to the existing signal generators behind the
instrument panel and at the rear of each indicator. Interface with the collective micro switch
to control the flight timer within the cycle counter is also provided on Rev. H and newer
systems.

A Single power source via a 1 amp circuit breaker supplies provides power to the cycle
counter via the pp5 buss.

3.3 Cycle Counter Operation

For detailed description of the Cycle Counter installed with the Turbomeca Validated
software, please refer to the “AKV Arriel 1 Cycle Counter Operating Specification”
document supplied separately from this ICA.

4. MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
4.1 Routine Cleaning & Maintenance
Routine Cleaning & Maintenance of the Cycle Counter may be required as the result of an
inspection. Re-tighten loose fasteners to the standard torque values shown in Table 1 and
Table 2. Perform routine cleaning to remove contaminants from the Cycle Counter.
Remove dirt from equipment using a clean, soft cloth dampened with mild soap and warm
water; avoid damaging the finish.

CAUTION
USE OF EXCESSIVE FORCE CAN DAMAGE THE LENS AND DECALS

4.2 Tools
No special tools are required.

4.3 Overhaul
There are no component overhaul requirements for this type design change. Under normal
operating conditions the Cycle Counter will not require component overhaul. All parts and
assemblies are designed to be replaced “On Condition”. Any maintenance needed to the
Cycle Counter or its installation beyond that described in this document requires that the
components be removed and returned to AKV, Inc. The decision to return damaged
components may be a subjective one and should be made by a qualified A & P Mechanic.

4.4 Component Retirement/Retirement Life

The Cycle Counter has been designed with components that have a virtually unlimited life
span. However, it is anticipated that some components may require replacement at some
time during the service life of the helicopter. The decision to replace these parts is a
subjective one and should be made by the operator or an A & P Mechanic.

5. REQUIRED INSPECTIONS

5.1 Daily coherence check

The following procedure provides an approved method for conforming with the Turbomeca
“coherence check” as specified in the Turbomeca maintenance manual or with reference to
Turbomeca General Service Letter No. 2283/04 5th issue. It will provide a means to
determine that the cycle counter is recording cycles within your normal mission range.

Procedure: To understand your normal mission range, determine what the total manual
count was for the last 10 flights. Add all 10 flights together and then divide by 10. The result
is the average consumed cycles to which your normal range is determined by adding +/-
10%. Perform this function separately for Ng and Np.

After the last flight of the day, compare the recorded cycles from the digital display with your
normal mission range values. This method will insure that there is no significant discrepancy
which would be evident with either a digital display of zero “flt” cycles or “flt” cycles that are in
excess of what is the normal mission range. In the event that either of these situations is
observed, then perform the Annual Inspection of the cycle counter as described below.

5.2 Annual Inspection

An Annual inspection for functionality using this ICA document is required. When using the
ICA to perform the required inspections, use the “Annual Inspection” and subsequent
“Inspection Task Description” form below to perform the appropriate functional checks.

Any reference data needed to perform this inspection, other than this document, will be
listed in the “Data Reference” column of the inspection forms.

The inspection task to be completed is described in the “Inspection Task Description”

column of the inspection form. When each task is completed satisfactorily, the mechanic
performing the inspection task signs the “Mechanic” column for that task.

If the inspection task fails the inspection, the reason for the failure must be determined and
remedial action taken before the “Mechanic” block can be signed off. Remedial action may
involve checking for broken wires or poor connections, sending the assembly to the
manufacturer for inspection, overhaul or replacement, etc. Once the appropriate remedial
action has been taken and the annual inspection task has been satisfactorily performed,
the mechanic may sign off the “Mechanic” block.

Once all tasks are signed off in the “Mechanic” Column, the inspection form may be signed
off at the top of the form. The inspection has then been completed.

5.3 Special Inspection

In the event of a hard landing, perform the “Annual Inspection” above prior to returning the
aircraft to service.

Functional Check
Note: Refer to the “Arriel 1 Operating Specification” document for detailed information
on the cycle counter operation. The AKV Cycle Counter utilizes a special version of the
recommended procedure which is validated by Turbomeca as “Linear Ver Rev 1” or
later approved revisions. The ”Linear “ version” is a Turbomeca approved variant of the
“recommended procedure” and records a K1 penalty for each 0.1% of speed increase
due to the higher resolution capability of the cycle counter. The installed software
version is indicated on the cycle counter power-up screen. Contact AKV to upgrade the
software to this version if it is not installed.

1. Perform a ground run of the A/C and observe the first data screen for the Ng and Np
speeds. These values are compared to the instrument panel indicators and should be
within +/- 0.5%.
Arriel 1
Operating Note: Ground runs of the A/C do not require cycle penalties to be recorded. A flight must
Specification be initiated in order to observe cycle penalties next to the “Flt” indication on the digital
display.

2. Perform a normal departure, cruise and landing. Note the Max Ng (K1) to the nearest
0.1% during takeoff and the min Ng speed (K2) during power reduction as well as how
many times Ng was > 85% then < 85% then > 85%. After shutdown, compare your
estimated cycle count using the Arriel Operating Specification document examples
starting on Pg 11 for both Ng and Np.

Make sure there is no significant discrepancy between the estimated values and
recorded values shown on the cycle counter. If a discrepancy exists, refer to the
troubleshooting sect. 7 or contact AKV for further assistance. In place of the AKV Cycle
Counter, continue operating the A/C using the Turbomeca “manual cycle counting”
procedure during removal and repair of the cycle counter.

After the cycle counter is repaired, repeat this “Annual Inspection” procedure to verify
correct operation. Use the GSE programming kit to update the cycle counter with any
new totals.
