5. Operation of system
5. OPERATION OF SYSTEM
The system uses pressure and return filtering. Pressure filtering is used in the drilling pump
(801), but return flow filtering is common to both pumps.
Hose-mounted filter (641) with filtering capacity of 20 µm abs. is used for pressure filtering. If the
pressure difference over the filter rises over 2.5 bar, the pressure switch 1S180 turns the
indicator light (H611) on the indicator light panel goes on, indicating that the filter element should
be replaced. The filtering unit body is also equipped with by-pass valve that opens if the pressure
difference exceeds 3.5 bar.
The return flow of both pumps passes through the return filter (31). The return filter is mounted on
the tank. The filtering capacity of the return filter element is 10µm abs. A visual indicator located
on the filter itself informs the operator when the filter element should be changed.
The filtering unit body is also equipped with by-pass valve that opens if the pressure difference
exceeds 1.6 bar.
The manufacturer’s recommendation for the purity class of the system is 20/15/12 according to
the ISO4406 (c).
Note! If the oil is cold (below +30°c), both pressure and return oil filter monitoring are by-
passed to avoid unnecessary alarms caused by the high viscosity of cold oil.
The hydraulic oil tank is also equipped with an air filter. Its filtering capacity is 5µm. This filter has
no monitoring indicators but, to ensure the cleanness of hydraulic oil, it should be replaced
according to the service instructions.
The oil returning from various actuators (except leakage oil) is gathered together is common
return line using collector (660) and (903) located on the front chassis. From the collector (660)
return oil goes and straight to the drilling tank. From the collector (903) the return oil goes through
to the oil/water cooler (27) and then to the return oil filter (31) into the hydraulic oil tank.
The oil/water cooler (27) is always in operation when water flushing is on.
After cold start, hydraulic oil should be warmed up to drilling temperature before drilling is started.
This can be accomplished, for instance, by using an electric oil heater in the tank.
The recommended oil temperature of the drilling is between 40-- 60 degrees (depending on the
type of the oil).
