Навчальний посібник складається з тестів та контрольних завдань


з англійської мови, підготовлений відповідно до програми середньої
загальноосвітньої школи та вимог, які ставляться до студентів І курсу
типовою програмою з іноземних мов для неспеціальних факультетів
вузів. Мета публікації - дати можливість послідовно повторити
програмний граматичний та лексичний матеріал, поглибити знання і
набути нових вмінь і навичок шляхом їх перевірки. Посібник може бути
використаний: особами, які готуються складати вступний іспит з
англійської мови в вищий навчальний заклад і ставлять собі за мету
підготуватися до нього в стислі строки; для перевірки знань як студентів,
так і слухачів курсів; учнями загальноосвітніх середніх шкіл, ліцеїв,
гімназій та особами, в знаннях англійської мови яких є серйозні
прогалини і які хочуть поглибити свої знання з англійської мови. До
посібника увійшли 28 варіантів тестових завдань. В кожному тесті є ЗО
запитань. Запитання виконуються шляхом альтернативного вибору
правильного варіанту відповіді. Додаються тексти та проблемні
завдання на перевірку розуміння змісту тексту. Наявність ключів у
посібнику дозволяє використовувати його в самостійній роботі по
подальшому розширенню знань з англійської мови. Посібник
призначений також для роботи під контролем викладача.

ВАРІАНТ 1
Завдання 1-5.
Прочитайте уважно текст, зрозумійте його зміст (без словника).
Martin was an American. He went to Britain last summer, and he
visited some of his British friends there. Two of them were Mr. and Mrs.
Andrews. They lived near Edinburgh, and Martin stayed in their house for a
'Week and enjoyed it very much. On his last evening with the Andrews,
Martin said to them, "My aeroplane to New York leaves very early tomorrow
morning. I'm going to get up at five o'clock and make my breakfast. Please
don't come down".
He said goodbye to his good friends „that evening and came down to the
kitchen in the morning and looked at the table. There was a photograph of
Mrs. Andrews on it in front of her chair, and a photograph of Mr. Andrews in
front of his chair. Martin laughed happily and said, "That's very good. I'm
not going to eat my breakfast alone this morning !"

Прочитайте уважно текст, зрозумійте його зміст (без словника).
Timothy was ten years old. He was not a very good pupil, and he did
not like having to do homework, because he preferred to do other things in
his free time. Frequently he did not do his homework, and when he did do it,
he always made a lot of mistakes.
Then one day, his mathematics teacher looked at Timothy's homework
and saw that he had got all his sums right. He was very pleased and rather
surprised. He called Timothy to liis desk and said to him, "You got all your
homework right this time, Timothy. What happened? Did your father help
you?"
Usually Timothy's father did help him with his homework, but the
evening before this, he had not been able to, because he had not been at
home, so Timothy answered, "No, sir. He was busy last night, so I had to do
it all myself'.

It was a very hot day in the middle of summer, and there were no trees
along the street. Mr. Brown closed his shop at half past five, went out into
the street and began walking to his bus. He was very fat. The sun shone
straight down the street, and in a few minutes Mr. Brown was very hot. A
small boy came out of another shop in the street, and followed Mr. Brown.
He stayed very near him all the time, and he kicked the heels of Mr. Brown's
shoes several times. Mr. Brown looked at him angrily each time.
After the third time, Mr. Brown stopped, turned round and said to the
small boy, "What are you doing? Stop following me like that ! You're going
to hurt my heels". "Please don't stop me the small boy said. "It's very hot

Mrs. Robinson had one small son. His name was Billy, Mrs. Robinson
loved Billy very much, and as he was not a strong child, she was always
afraid that he might get ill, so she used to take him to the best doctor in the
town four times a year to be examined. During one of these visits, the doctor
gave Billy various tests and then said to him, "Have you had any trouble with
your nose or ears recently?" Billy thought for a second and then answered,
"Yes, I have".
Mrs. Robinson was very worried. "But I'm sure you've never told me
that, Billy!" she said anxiously. "Oh, really ?" said the doctor seriously" And
what trouble have you had with your nose and ears, my boy?" "Well",
answered Billy, "I always have trouble with them when I'm taking my jersey
off, because the neck is very tight".

A young lady who was on holiday in Brighton went into a bank to
collect some money which had been sent there for her from the town in
which she lived. The clerk in the Brighton bank did not know her, so he
said. "What proof have you got that you are really the lady who should
collect this money ?"
The young lady looked worried for a few moments and said, "I don't
think I've brought any proof with me", but then she suddenly looked happy
again. She opened her bag, took a photograph of herself out of it and showed
it to the clerk. "Here's something", she said. The clerk looked at the
photograph carefully and then looked at the young lady. "Yes, that's you", he
said, and paid the money to her without any more trouble.

Helen was eight years old, and one day one of her teeth began hurting.
She cried in her class at school, and her teacher said kindly, "Why are you

That afternoon Helen spoke to her mother about her tooth, and her mother

Of the six outer planets, Mars, commonly called the Red Planet, is the

due to the reddish, rocky Martian soil. No biological life was found, though
it had been speculated by many scientists. The Viking also monitored many
weather changes including violet dust storms. Some water vapour, polar ice
and permafrost (frost below the surface) were found, indicating that at one
time there were significant quantities of water on this distant planet.
Evidence collected by the spacecraft shows some present volcanic action,
though the volcanoes are believed to be dormant, if not extinct.

rich man. However he foresaw its universally destructive power too late.
Nobel preferred not to be remembered as the inventor of dynamite. So in

mankind. Originally there were five awards: literature, physics,chemistry,

which vary from 30.000 to 125.000. Every year on December 10, the

judge's decisions. Americans have won numerous science awards, but
relatively few literature prizes. Some people have won two prizes, but this is
rare, others have shared their prizes.

Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of
various forms of communication. Generally, this expression of thoughts and
feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language
barrier, communication is accomplished through sign language in which
motions stand for letters, words and ideas. Tourists, the deaf and the mute
have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of
whole words are veiy picturesque and exact, and can be used internationally;
spelling, however, cannot. Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by
certain actions. A wink can be a way of flirting or indicating that the party is
only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a
negative reaction. Other forms of non-linguistic language can be found in
Braille (a system of raised dots read with the finger-tips) signal flags, Morse
code. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn and instruct people.
Even in earliest times there were several different ways by means of which
people could send messages. Some used fire and smoke signals, some used
couriers, men who run or ride very quickly between towns and villages.

Elizabeth Blackwell was bom in England in 1821 and emigrated to
New-York City when she was ten years old. One day she decided that she
wanted to become a doctor. That was nearly impossible for a woman in the

Philadelphia. So determined was she, that she taught school and gave music

Olympus. Winners were greatly honoured by having olive wreaths placed on
their heads and having poems sung about their deeds. Originally these were
held as games of friendship, and any wars in progress were halted to allow
the games to take place. The Greeks attached so much importance to these
games that they calculated time in four-year cycles called "Olympiads' dating
from 776 B.C. The ancient Greeks had no winter sports - there was no need
for it. And only in 1924 the first Winter Olympic games were held in France.

1937, more and more people shied away from this form of transportation.

the twentieth century, had to wait many years for the recognition he
deserved. The son of a bandmaster, Ives entered Yale at twenty to study

pursue a career in music. He suspected correctly that the public would not
accept the music he wrote. Even the few conductors and performers he tried

time, he still dedicated himself to composing music in the evenings, on
weekends, and during vacations. Although he occasionally hired musicians

reconciled to the fact that his ideas, especially the use of dissonance and
special effects, were just too different for the musical mainstream.
Determined to share his music with the few people who might appreciate it,
he published his work privately and distributed it free.

Sequoyah was a young Indian, son of a white trader and an Indian girl.
At an early age he became fascinated by "the taking leaf', an expression that
he used to describe the white man's written records.
Although many believed this "talking leaf' to be a gift from the Great
Spirit, Sequoyah refused to accept that theory. Like other Indians of the
period, he was illiterate, but his determination to remedy the situation led to
the invention of a unique 86 character alphabet based on the sound patterns
that he heard. His family and friends thought him mad, but while recovering
from a hunting accident, he diligently and independently set out to create a
form of communication for his own people as well as for other Indians. In
1321, after twelve years of work, he had successfully developed a written
language that would enable thousands of Indians to read and write.
Sequoyah’s desire to preserve words and events for later generations has
caused him to be remembered among the important inventors. The giant
redwood trees of California, called "sequoyas" in his honour, will further
imprint his name in history.

Juan wanted to go to Britain to speak English with real English people.
His sister's husband was an English doctor and when Juan wrote to her, his

"Never mind", he thought, "the husband speaks English". But this

CHINESE VASE
When I was a child I often went to see my grandmother. I thought her
house was as beautiful as a palace and the garden seemed bigger than a park.
As I grew older the house and garden seemed smaller but I still loved
visiting the old lady. There were so many beautiful things in the house.
Sometimes I played with the doll's house which was older than Grandmother
herself; at other times I looked at books which were more interesting than
my children's books at home. I loved a big Chinese vase which stood in the
hall. It was taller than me, and I could not see inside it. I walked round and
round it looking at the beautiful ladies and the birds and flowers and trees,
and grandmother often told me stories about these ladies. When I married I
took my two sons to visit their great-grandmother. They did not like the

loved so much. It was beautiful in our modern hall. One day I came home
from the shops. Two small boys met me at the door. They looked guilty. Paul

WHERE IS LONDON AIRPORT?


Last summer I got a letter from my Italian friend Giovanni. He said he
was coming to England, and he asked me to meet him at London Airport on
Friday, June 25th at 5:30 a.m. I wrote and told him to look for me at the
airport. London Airport (at Heathrow) is quite a long way from the centre of
London, but there are special buses which come and go between the air
terminal in Central London and the airport outside London. But I live quite
near the air terminal. I went to bed at 9:30 on June 24th and I got up at 3
o'clock in the morning. I got dressed in a hurry and walked to the air
terminal. I got a ticket and got on the first bus to the airport. The airport is
very big. There are several different buildings and they are full of shops and
airline offices and there are hundreds of people there, even early in the
morning. I did not know where to go. At last somebody took me to the
Italian Airline office. The young lady there told me there were no flights

from Italy. I showed her Giovanni's letter. She asked me, "Is your friend a
student?" "Yes", I said.
"Well", she said. "Students' flights usually go to Luton Airport". "Oh
dear", I said. "It's a quarter to five now. Can I get to Luton before 5:30?"
"No," she said. "It's too far away". I was very unhappy. I got the next
bus back to the air terminal and went back home. I got very hungry on the
bus. I was having break fast when the telephone rang. It was Giovanni. It
was a good thing I did not go to Luton Airport because Giovanni was
phoning me from Gatwick Airport. I arranged to meet him at the
underground station.

One afternoon some friends rang up Susan and Derek to invite them
out for the evening. They had not seen each other for a long time, but Susan
had bought tickets for the theatre that evening. They wanted to see the play

veiy much, because several people had recommended it to them. Also, it had
been very difficult to get tickets. In fact, they had only been able to get these
because someone else had returned them. They had not arranged anything
else for the evening, however, so they agreed to meet their friends for a drink
before the theatre. They all met early in the evening and talked for an hour.
When Susan got up, she found that her handbag had disappeared. They told
the manager what had happened. He was very upset and said that nothing
like that had happened for a long time. He went off to have a look around,
but nobody had seen the thief. No one had banded the bag in either. Susan
was upset because there had been quite a lot of money in it. They decided to
go to the theatre and forget about it for a few hours. They hoped that the
thief had just taken the money out and thrown the bag away. But even if
someone had found it, they would not have taken it to the police yet.
Suddenly Susan remembered that the theatre tickets had been in the bag too.
She had meant to give them to Derek, but had forgotten. By this time the
play had already started, so they decided it was not worth going to the
theatre. They went for a meal with their friends and later went to the nearest
police-station. To their surprise Susan's bag was there with everything in It !
A child had picked it up, the parents had discovered what had happened and
had handed it in immediately. They went straight to the theatre and, with the
money they thought they had lost, bought four expensive seats - for three
months later!

Pauline wanted to be a filmstar. When she was twelve she said to her
parents, "I want to be a filmstar". But it was not easy. She got into films -
not as a star - she became an "extra" - one of the people in a crowd. No
director asked her to be a star; the telephone never rang to offer her a big
part. One evening the man at the agency called her up and said, "There is a
film for you tomorrow, Pauline. Come by eight o'clock. You're a
telephonist". Pauline came to the studios by a quarter to eight. She waited
three hours before they came to the scene she was in. The assistant director
showed her where to sit - there were two other girls with her.
"O.K., Ben," said the director. "Are you ready?" "Yes, Mr.K.," said the
assistant.
It was very short: the star, a famous American actor, came to the girls
and stopped in front of where Pauline was sitting, Mr. K. did not like it.
"That's bad," he said, "very bad. Put some dialogue in there". The two men
talked for a moment and then Mr.K. said, "Hey, you. at the end of the row
there". Pauline jumped. "Me?" she asked.
"Yes, you I want a line from you here. I want you to look at Harry
when he comes in and say, "Mr. Marlowe, there's a call for you ! Can you
say that ?"
Pauline said she could, and they ran the scene through. This time Mr.
K. was very pleased, and the star smiled at her. "That's great", Mr.K. said,
coming over to Pauline. "What's your name?" "Pauline Grant".
"I liked that, Pauline", Mr.K. said. "Thanks". Pauline was very happy
that evening. Some weeks later she booked two seats for the premiere and
went to see her film with her boyfriend Michael. Before the film started she
saw Samuel K. only a few feet away from her. It was a good film but there
was no Pauline in it. Her scene together with many other unimportant scenes
had been cut out.

MONDAY MORNING
Monday morning is the worst time of the week for a Jot of people,
because it is the end of the weekend and the beginning of another week of
work. More things seem to go wrong on Monday morning than on other
days.
1. One Monday morning was worse than usual. She wanted to do some
baking, so she sent, the children into the garden to play. She made her
husband's favourite cake and put it in the oven. When she had finished she
looked out into the garden and saw David climbing a tree. She was not
worried because he had never fallen before.

sat down to have a rest.
4. Then she went upstairs to make the beds. When she was upstairs she
suddenly heard a branch break. She looked out quickly and saw David on the
ground. His arm was in a funny position and she thought he had broken it.
Her neighbour came to help. Jane asked her to phone the doctor.
5. "Tell me the worst," he said. "Well, I'll tell you the good news first",
Jane replied. "I've made your favourite cake this morning, the house isn't on
fire and our daughter hasn't broken her arms".

WANTED: A GOLDFISH
A professor of physiology, whose name was Floyd, was out visiting one
winter night, and the people at the house showed him a goldfish that had
died because the water that it was in had got frozen. The professor looked at
the fish and said, "Let me take it home and I think that tomorrow I can treat
it in the laboratory and revive it".
1. Floyd knelt down to pick it up, but he couldn't find it and stayed
there on his knees looking for it. Just then a policeman came along. He
stopped and said, "What are you doing there?"
2. To please him the policeman knelt down and began looking in the
snow and out came a goldfish! He was very much surprised.
3. Professors hate to be questioned. Floyd just looked over his shoulder
and said, "I am trying to find a goldfish".
4. "Great heavens"! he said. "Are there any more?" "Maybe a whole
lot," Floyd said. As the professor started off for home again, the policeman
was still on his knees looking for goldfish.
5. The policeman then understood that he was dealing with a madman,
and he said, "Now you just come along with me and I'll take you to a place
where we've a whole lot of goldfish - all you want." "All right", Floyd said,
"only just help me to get this one first".
6. So when he started for home they wrapped the goldfish in a bit of
paper and professor Floyd put it in his overcoat pocket. It was a cold night,
very late and with lots of deep snow along the street. On the way home Floyd
put his hand into his coat pocket and accidentally flipped out the goldfish
and it fell into the snow.
