Engine management

Service adjustments

Preparatory conditions

Engine at normal operating temperature.


Ignition system in good condition.
Air filter installed and in good condition.
Automatic transmission in 'P'.
All auxiliary equipment, including air conditioning, switched OFF.
Radiator fan must not run during checks and adjustments.

Idle speed

Adjustment - Fig. 1 , Fig. 2 & Fig. 3


TECHNICALDATA
Regulated idle speed - 1990 700±50 rpm
Regulated idle speed - 1991-96 770±50 rpm
Base idle speed - 1990 600±50 rpm
Base idle speed - 1991-96 620±50 rpm
Idle speed increase under load - 1990 70 rpm

Idle speed electronically controlled.


Disconnect idle air control (IAC) valve multi-plug Fig. 1 .
Start engine.
Allow idle speed to stabilise.
If idle speed not as specified:

Adjust base idle speed with idle speed screw Fig. 2 .
Switch ignition OFF.
Reconnect multi-plug.
Remove fuse indicated in engine compartment fuse box Fig. 3 [A] or Fig. 3 [B] .
Wait 10 seconds.
Refit fuse.
Start engine.
Allow idle speed to stabilise.
Check idle speed under no-load condition.
Switch on electrical loads.
Check that idle speed remains within specification.

If CO level not as specified: Access CO adjustment resistor on engine control module (ECM).

Run engine at approximately 2500-3000 rpm for 2 minutes.
Allow to idle.
Check CO level.
If CO level not as specified: Check for air leaks in intake and exhaust systems. Carry out
component and electrical tests.

Throttle initial position

Throttle initial position set by manufacturer.


No adjustment possible.

Reconnect vacuum hose.
Compare regulated pressure indicated with that specified.

Fuel pump should run continuously when switch is operated.
If pump does not run: Switch ignition OFF.

If battery voltage is not indicated: Check wiring.

Ensure ignition switched OFF.
Disconnect one high-tension lead from spark plug.
Connect test spark plug to high-tension lead.
Using insulated pliers, hold test spark plug 6 mm from suitable earth.
Briefly crank engine.
Check for strong blue spark.
Repeat test for each high-tension lead.
If no spark is visible: Carry out high-tension circuit component checks. Refer to General Test
Procedures.

If ignition timing not as specified: Access ignition timing adjuster, adjacent to engine
control module (ECM) Fig. 20 .
Adjust by turning ignition timing adjuster screw Fig. 20 [1] .
Turn screw clockwise to advance.

ECT sensor may be checked in situ if engine temperature and resistance readings are
compared.
