Philippine Visual Arts

Visual arts in the Philippines can be described as a fusion of Western and naïve
cultural influences. The Spanish friars were the one who introduced the Western styles
of painting and engraving to the Filipino through art which was mainly on religious
themes since these forms back then were strictly for the church or religious purposes
only.
It was sculpting that the Filipinos accepted quickly, which resulted in the
emergence of the sculpted saints that replaced the earlier carved “anitos” in the
natives’ home. Nowadays, the influence of the Spaniards can still be seen in the works
of the Filipinos along with influences from other countries as a result of globalization.
In the 19th century, wealthier, educated Filipinos introduced more secular
Filipino art, causing art in the Philippines to deviate from religious motifs. The use of
watercolor paintings increased and the subject matter of paintings began to include
landscapes, Filipino inhabitants, Philippine fashion, and government officials.

Some of the Country’s Most Notable Artists

1. National Artist Ang Kiukok – he drew the crucifixion of Christ that exhibited
hopelessness and depression.

2. National Artist Napoleon Abueva – known as the Father of Modern Philippine

Sculpture Abueva is the pioneer in modern sculptures because he was the first artist
who had creatively and successfully moved out of the classical style to create his own
abstract experimental modern art pieces.

3. National Artist Fernando Amorsolo – dubbed as the grand old man of the Philippine
art scene, Fernando Amorsolo has made the largest and solidest contribution to the
Philippines.

4. National Artist Hernando Ocampo – he made paintings reflecting economic and

psychological dislocation in the country brought by World War II, a time of widespread
poverty, hunger, and misery. His works also depicted objection against the disparity
between rich and poor.

5. National Artist Victorio Edades – Father of Modern Philippine Painting, created

works which were dark in color and gave pictures of Filipino masses as theme.
6. Juan Luna – the paintings of Juan Luna were the first Filipino works of art to become
famous inside and outside of the Philippines because of its meaning and significance.
He produced works in the romantic and early impressionist style.

7. National Artist Guillermo Tolentino – a renowned artist known for transforming hopes
and aspirations of freedom into art.

WHAT’S IN?
The most basic theory of communication illustrates that communication
happens when a message is sent from a sender, through a channel or medium,
and received by a receiver or audience. The means through which the
message is transmitted and/or stored is called “medium” or “”media”.

WHAT’S NEW?

Activity 1: THINK ABOUT IT!

The students will identify different kinds of media in their home and
differentiate the various kinds of content or messages these media channels carry.
Put it in your notebook.

WHAT IS IT?

Two Major Components in a Media Product:

1. Medium (channel) – medium is the physical media on which a message is

carried.
Ex.
Television Photographs
Film magazines
Newspaper Billboards
Flyers

2. Message – is what the medium carries.

Ex.
News program Radio Shows
Music Documentaries
Movies Advertising
Announcements Photo Essays
Magazine Articles
Aurial Media
Aurial Media can be describe as being the oldest form of media. “Aurial” refers
to the domain of hearing and sound, and so Aurial Media would refer to modes of
communication that are based on using the human voice, music, and other sound
elements such as sound effects and tones.
Radio – one of the most common froms of Aurial Media – evolved from different
technologies starting around 1890. AM radio has become known for social
commentary, news, and radio dramas, while FM radio has become the venue for music
and popular culture.

Print Media
Print media is another type of medium referring to mass media technologies that
utilize the printing of text and images on paper or similar formats. The most common
forms of Print Media are newspapers and magazines, although flyers, streamers,
posters, tarpaulins, and billboards can also be considered a form of Print Media.
Although the act of putting words and images on paper has been around for
millennia, it was not until 1440 when German Goldsmith Johannes Guternberg
combined movable type and the screw – type press into the first mechanical printing
press. Prior to the movable type, text had to be copied and reproduced by hand, this
made items like books and manuscripts extremely valuable, expensive, and a form of
luxury goods.

Visual Media
Visual media are made forms that are primarily perceived or appreciated by
seeing. Although Print Media is inherently similar, Visual Media does not rely on
physical printout to be perceived.
Television, cinema, video games, documentaries, and the like use a series of
moving pictures and images to communicate their messages to audiences. Early films
were only two minutes long and audiences viewed them individually on machines
situated in business arcades.
Like radio, Television came about as a combination of several technologies; as
these technologies matured and the costs became more accessible, TV sets began to
make it into people’s homes and radio began to make it into people’s homes and radio
began to make a decline.

Digital Media
Digital Media can come in the form of websites, text messages, kiosks, e –
books, video games, software, or mobile apps. Depending on the device being used or
the type of application developed, Digital Media can interact with the audience or
environment. Advertisers, for instance, have utilized location – specific ads that detect
the location of a person’s device or the location from which a person accesses the
internet.
Broadcast: Network TV such as GMA, or newspapers such as Philippine Daily
Inquirer
Narrowcast: customizable music playlist such as Spotify, movies on demand
such as iflix, and magazine content such as FLipboard.

Media Arts
The term media art is now used to refer to the domain or the study of media and
media products and content. It is a field that covers production, analysis, creation, and
critique of what it is that we see, hear, feel, touch, or even taste and smell as part of a
media landscape of senders sending messages.
Media arts refers to artworks or creative outputs that depend on a technical
component to function; by incorporating emerging technologies into their artworks,
many artists using new media are constantly redefining the traditional categories of art
or are redefining artistic outputs and formats.

WHAT MORE?

Activity 2. I – Discover Mo
The student will visit the website of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Bulletin,
Rappler, or Philippine Star and answer the following question. Place it in your
notebook.
1.What are the different messages present and who are their senders?
2.How does each sender capitalize or maximize the digital medium?
3.Look for rich media content such as video, sound, graphics, or animations in
addition to just photographs.

Activity 3.

The students will identify one advertising campaign. Analyze how the same
campaign message is communicated using the different media channels: TV, radio,
print, and digital. Answer the following guide question and put it in a whole sheet of
paper.

i.What is the message of the campaign?

ii. How was the message adapted into the particular medium?
iii. Did the message change or did it remain the same?

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED?

Media can come in different forms – most of which should be very familiar – and
in this day and age have become increasingly commonplace and omnipresent.
Throughout history man and society has evolved various forms as a medium through
which to communicate their messages to other. The ability to control the means of
communication – the channel or medium – became a core aspect of ability to rule or
control a population.

WHAT I CAN DO?

Activity 3. My – ARM (Artistic Recycled Materials)

The student will visit the GOOGLE or YOUTUBE and search for an artwork or
artistic performance using the search phrase “media art performance” or “media
artworks. Through an essay form, determine the different mediums used to create the
work, or how media technology allowed the artistic piece to become created or exist.
Put it in a whole sheet of paper.

Post-Assessment
