CHEMICAL REACTION

In a chemical change, one or more substances are converted into

Pure Substances and Mixtures

Pure Substance
is a form of matter that has a definite (constant) composition and
distinct properties at the nanoscopic level. This means that their
composition will be the same no matter where you find them. They
can either be elements or compounds.

ELEMENT:t is the simplest form COMPOUND: is a

of matter. They are pure substance composed of
substances composed of only atoms of two or more
one kind of atom, and cannot elements chemically
be separated into a simpler combined in fixed
substance by chemical means. proportions.

A mixture is a combination of two or more substances in which the

substances retain their distinct identities. The parts or components of a
mixture are simply mixed physically and can usually be separated. The
properties of a mixture are a combination of the different properties of
the components.
HOMOGENEOUS

Homo is a prefix meaning one or uniform. Geneous is a suffix

meaning throughout. Homogeneous means uniform
throughout. When we say homogenous mixture, we refer to a
mixture whose composition is uniform throughout. There is
an even or equal distribution of the substances that are
combined. Thus, there is only one phase that can be seen. It
may be a solid, liquid, or gas phase.

Colloids are mixtures Solutions are homogenous

whose particles are mixtures of two or more
larger than the ions or substances whose particles
molecules in a solution are of atomic or molecular
but smaller than the size. A solution consists of
particles forming two parts: solute and
suspensions. solvent. A solute is a
substance that is dissolved
and a solvent is a substance
HETEROGENOUS that dissolves the solute.

Hetero is a prefix meaning two or more phases or unequal.

Geneous is a suffix meaning throughout. Heterogeneous
means unequal throughout or, two or more phases
throughout. A heterogeneous is one in which the different
components are easily recognized. Two or more phases of
matter can be seen. Oil and water, salt and sand, and granite
are all examples of a heterogeneous mixture.

Suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures that contain large

particles that tend to settle on standing. The particles of
suspensions are separated by using a centrifuge or filter paper.
The red and blood cells of the blood are separated from the
plasma by using a centrifuge. Mud is separated from water
using filter paper.
