INTRODUCTION
A liver function test is a blood test in which the blood is examined in a laboratory to check for liver
damage and the overall health of the liver. The levels of certain substances in the blood can help show if
the liver is working properly.
DEFINITION:
Liver function tests are blood tests used to help diagnose and monitor liver disease or damage. The tests
measure the levels of certain enzymes and proteins in your blood.
PURPOSE:
Screen for liver infections, such as hepatitis.
Monitor the progression of a disease, such as viral or alcoholic hepatitis, and determine
how well as treatment is working.
Measure the severity of a disease, particularly scarring of the liver (cirrhosis).
Monitor possible side effects of medications.
ENZYMES:
1. Alanine transaminase: 0 to 45 IU/L
2. Aspartate transaminase: 0 to 35 IU/L
3. Alkaline phosphatase: 30 to 120 IU/L
4. Gamma-glutamyltransferase: 0 to 30 IU/L
5. Bilirubin: 2 to 17 micromoles/L
6. Prothrombin time: 10.9 to 12.5 seconds
7. Albumin: 40 to 60 g/L
Types of Tests and What They Measure
There are a number of liver tests, with lots of complex names. Some common ones include:
1.Alanine transaminase (ALT) test. ALT is an enzyme that helps break down proteins and is found
mainly in your liver. High levels in your blood could mean you have liver damage.
2. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) test. ALP is an enzyme in your liver, bile ducts, and bone . You might
have high levels if you have liver damage or disease, a blocked bile duct, or bone disease.

3. Albumin and total protein test. Your liver makes two main proteins: albumin and globulin. Low
levels might mean damage or disease. Keep in mind that your immune system also makes globulin.
4.Aspartate transaminase (AST) test. AST is another enzyme in your liver. High blood levels could
sign of damage or disease.
5.Bilirubin test. Your body makes b ilirubin when it breaks down red blood cells. Usually, your liver
cleans bilirubin out of your body. If you have high levels in your blood, a problem called jaundice, you
may have liver damage.
6.Gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT ) test. High levels of the GGT enzyme could point to liver or bile
duct damage.
7.L- lactate dehydrogenase (LD) test. LD is another enzyme that’s high when you have liver damage,
but other conditions can also raise its level.
8.Prothrombin time (PT) test. This test measures how long it takes your blood to clot. If it takes a long
time, that could be a sign of liver damage.
Conclusion
In conclusion, liver-function tests are not direct measures of liver function but, rather, indirect measures
of liver integrity . When ordered, the most often requested tests are for AST and ALT. Elevations of
either can indicate possible liver disease.
