COMMON LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Teacher Name: Anisa Saigo

Name of Unit / Lesson: What is Earth Science?
Content: Earth Science
Grade Level: 9th grade
Length: 45 mins
Planning
Essential Questions:
Lesson question: What is Earth Science?

Unit Question: What are the 4 branches of Earth Science?

Focus Learning Standards: HS-ESS2-2. Analyze geoscience data to make the claim that one change to earth's surface
can create feedback that causes changes to other earth systems. (Stability and Change)

Learning Objectives: Students will be able to define Vocabulary: Earth Science

Earth science, identify key Earth science vocabulary, Geology- Geology is the study of Earth
and demonstrate an understanding of the Earth as a Oceanography-Oceanography is the scientific study of
system. the oceans.
Meteorology- Meteorology is the study of the
atmosphere and the processes that produce weather
and climate
Astronomy- Astronomy is the study of the universe
Earth Science- Is a group of sciences that studies Earth
Science and neighbors in space.

Assessing throughout the lesson: Use think-pair-share Assessment at the end of the lesson: WORKSHEETS
to have students explain what Earth science is and TO BE GRADED.
share their definitions with the class.
During the lesson, students will be asked questions
throughout the lesson to make sure that they are on
track and are understanding the information being
provided.
Questions: I want us to think about how we study
our neighbors in space such as other planets?

Child/Youth Identities and Contexts for Learning: Make connections between Earth science and their lives,
highlighting its relevance to their local environment.
During class students will make connections to learn about earth science ( 4 branches of the Earth Science ) and
the significance of knowing important information. I ask students who travel home alone: What do they have to
do when going home alone. We will discuss that although it is important to make sure we are being cautious of
our actions but also being aware of our surroundings. We learn in Earth Science about the Earth and the
surrounding planets in the solar system to gain a better knowledge on how to treat the Earth and understand
why the Earth is created as such.
Planning for Culturally Responsive Practice: Planning for Differentiation: Students will receive
work differentiated based on IEPs
The powerpoint I created explains each branch of
earth science that also has images for each branch so
that students understand the definition of the word.
Whether a student is a visual learner or not, the
images can help students understand the definition.
Incorporate examples and case studies from various
cultures, showcasing how different societies have
interacted with their environment and studied Earth
science.

Learning Principles and Rationale: Materials:

Students will share their definition of earth science, Whiteboard
Geology projector
Astronomy Classwork notebook
Meteorology powerpoint
Oceanography Earth Science textbook:chapter 1, “What is Earth

Ex: GEO- means earth
Ology- means the study of
I will do the same for Astronomy, Oceanography, and
meteorology.
I will go in depth that
-ology, -onomy, and -ography have the same meaning
(The study of)
ask questions:
1. Does -ology, -onomy, and -ography have the
same meaning?
2. What familiar words do you see?
I will explain that each of the vocab words introduced
are the 4 branches of Earth Science and explains how
our world was created.

I will be circulating the room waiting for students to

raise their hand and say their answer.

Middle: Middle:

The students will learn about the two broad areas:
historical and physical geology.
Skills I am assessing for:

I will continue to present the presentation with the
students as they fill out their worksheets.
We will review Astronomy, oceanography, and
meteorology

Skills I am assessing for : to assist with the worksheet.
1) asking questions about the meaning of the
4 branches of earth science.
Ask clarifying questions to make sure students are on
track.

The presentation is aligned to the worksheet.

End / Sense-making: End / Sense-making

Summarize the key points covered in the lesson. Students will be able to work on worksheets they
Revisit the initial question from the "Do Now" activity receive during class
and have students share their answers.
Emphasize the importance of Earth science in
understanding our planet and its impact on our lives.
Review the vocabulary from the presentation

Teacher Reflection:
I will take a moment to reflect on the effectiveness of the lesson, considering the engagement of students, the
depth of their understanding, and any adjustments that could be made for future lessons.
