                              LESSON 3
                             PLANT LIFE
Answer the following questions:
  1. How does a seed absorb water?
A seed absorbs water through a small hole on the top of the scar.
  2. What is germination? What are the conditions necessary for
     germination?
The growth of a baby plant from a seed is called germination.
Air, water and warmth are the conditions necessary for
     germination.
  3. Why is dispersal of seed necessary?
If all seeds produced by a plant fell on the ground near the plant
and grow close to each other, they will not get enough space, air,
water, minerals and sunlight. Under these conditions they cannot
grow into healthy plants. So, to reduce crowing, dispersal of seeds
     necessary.
  4. Name three agents of dispersal. Give examples of each.
     Agents of dispersal examples
     1) Wind cotton, maple, drumstick
     2) Water lotus, coconut, water lily
     3) Animals mango, papaya, cherry
  5. Human beings also help in the dispersal of seed. How?
        • When we eat fruits and throw away the seeds, we help the
seeds to disperse. Examples: mango, papaya, cherry
       • The seeds which have stiff hair, spines or hooks stick to our
clothes and are carried long distances. Examples: burrs
  6. Draw a labelled diagram of seed and write the functions of the
     parts.
(Draw the diagram given in T.B page 11 and label the parts)
Parts of seed Functions of the parts
       • Seed coat It protects the seed.
       • Scar It is a mark on the seed where the seed was
                          attached to the fruit.
They protect the baby plant and store food
       • Seed leaves for the baby plant.
       • Baby plant It grows into a new plant.
