Background of the Study:

Institutions of learning, particularly universities and colleges, have always had challenges with keeping
track of student attendance in classrooms. Traditionally, teachers would take attendance using a paper-
based system which is time-consuming and prone to errors. With the advent of technology, however,
the process of taking and monitoring attendance has become easier, more accurate, and more efficient.
The use of web-based attendance management systems has gained popularity among educational
institutions in recent years as they provide an automated and more accurate means of monitoring
student attendance.

Benefits of Web-based Attendance Management Systems:

Web-based attendance management systems are software applications that enable teachers and
administrators to track student attendance in real-time. These systems are designed to automate the
attendance-taking process and reduce the workload of teachers while providing a centralized database
for administrators to access attendance records. Furthermore, the use of web-based attendance
management systems can help educational institutions to reduce absenteeism and improve overall
academic performance.

Several research studies have been conducted on the use of web-based attendance management
systems in educational institutions. For instance, in a study by Chukwuemeka and Samuel (2019), it was
found that the use of a web-based attendance management system improved the overall academic
performance of students in Nigerian universities. The study revealed that the system provided an
efficient means of tracking attendance and identifying students who were consistently absent. As a
result, the university was able to implement appropriate interventions to improve student attendance
and academic performance.

Similarly, a study by Hafidzah and Susanty (2018) found that the use of a web-based attendance
management system improved the accuracy and reliability of attendance data. The system was found to
be more efficient than the traditional paper-based system as it reduced errors in recording attendance
and eliminated the need for manual data entry. The study concluded that the use of web-based
attendance management systems could help educational institutions to save time and resources while
improving attendance tracking.

The benefits of web-based attendance management systems are not limited to universities and colleges.
They can also be used in primary and secondary schools to improve attendance and academic
performance. A study by Kamble and Kumbhar (2019) revealed that the use of a web-based attendance
management system in primary schools improved attendance rates and reduced absenteeism. The study
also found that the system helped to improve the quality of education by reducing disruptions caused by
late arrivals and absences.

Improved Communication with Web-based Attendance Management Systems:

In addition to improving attendance tracking and academic performance, web-based attendance

management systems can also help to improve communication between teachers, students, and
parents. The system can be used to send automatic notifications to parents when their child is absent
from school or when their attendance falls below a certain threshold. This can help to encourage
parents to become more involved in their child’s education and improve overall attendance rates.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, the use of web-based attendance management systems has become essential in
educational institutions due to the benefits they provide. These systems offer an automated and
accurate means of tracking student attendance, reducing the workload of teachers, and improving
overall academic performance. The use of such systems can also help educational institutions to save
time and resources while improving attendance tracking. The literature review has shown that several
research studies have demonstrated the benefits of web-based attendance management systems in
educational institutions. The use of web-based attendance management systems is, therefore,
recommended for all institutions of learning to help improve attendance tracking, academic
performance, and communication between teachers, students, and parents.
