PERSONAL BEAUTY PREFERENCE AND SELF ESTEEM OF GRADE 12 HUMSS
STUDENT IN ORIENTAL MINDORO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
CHAPTER 1
Introduction
Beauty preference have been prevalent, and they continue to have a
significant impact on everyday interaction, the media, and the commercial world. They
decide what is beauty, including body shape, facial proportion, height, and weight. The
researchers of PERSONAL BEAUTY PREFERENCE AND SELF ESTEEM have
attempt to explain why they exist. There are numerous influences on our current beauty
preferences, ranging from evolution to racism to social media. A persons level of
attraction they receive from other members of the opposite sex, as well as their self-
esteem. In general, those who are less physically attractive tend to have lower self-esteem
and confidence than those who are more physically attractive, when it comes to self-
esteem, physical attractiveness is frequently regarded as more important than other
characteristics. This is evident in the various way in which people treat those who are
attractive and unattractive. People who have low self-esteem may attempt to improve
their appearance because they believe that physical beauty equates to popularity, success,
and happiness. Body image and self-esteem start in the mind, not in the mirror. They can
change the way you understand your value and worth. Healthy body image and self-
esteem are a big part of well-being. How beauty preferences affects our self-esteem. We
have little influence over what goes on around us and what other people do. Our
perception of these circumstances and actions has a impact on how we feel and think
about ourselves. The relationship between our internal and external surroundings has an
impact on how we feel like being self-conscious, conspicuous, angry or anxious,
embarrassed are different. The level of physical attractiveness a person possesses affects
both their self-esteem and the level of attraction they experience form others of the
opposite sex. Less physically attractive people typically have lower levels of self-esteem
and confidence than more physically attractive people. These preference affects the
students negatively as it heavily impacts the confidence or self-esteem of the students .
Losing confidence or faith in yourself could not only affect how you see yourself on the
outer, but also in the inside. This matter could also degrade the students into doubting
their choices and abilities in academics. The purpose of this study is to provide possible
interventions into making improvements for the students who are experiencing the issue.
This study can also give awareness to student to help prevent this issue and the issue and
realize the faults with the preferences. How women perceive themselves is significantly
influenced by their sense of attractiveness. It has been discovered in several research that
women`s self-esteem and attractiveness are positively correlated. Grilo et al. discovered a
favorable relationship between appearance rating and overall self-esteem, and Cash et al.
discovered a positive correlation between physical attractiveness and appearance pleasure
(Anthonieta Looman Mafra et al. 2022)
There are several facial features that have been found to be reliable indicators of female
attractiveness, however, only a small number of studies consider the combined effects of many
measurements. Beauty is a complicated concept that has been extensively researched throughout
history. It is frequently concept described as an inherent quality of some people that causes those
who experience it to feel a variety of emotions. (Jose Antonio Munoz-Reyes et al. 2015)
According to Sushmita Barman 2022, Women`s bodies come in a variety of shapes. A person`s
body shape is determined by their bone structure, genres, age, fat distribution, muscle mass and
way of life. Body shape of women includes 11 types, which are the straight body shape, Pear
body shape, Apple body shape, Spoon body shape, Hourglass body shape, Inverted triangle body
shape, Oval body shape, Diamond shape body, Top hourglass body shape, Skinny body type,
Athletic body type, Lollipop body shape. Also, any additional body form is either a combination
of two different body types or a synthesis of the five types body. Body types and body form are
terms that are frequently used interchangeably in blogs.

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS
Self- Determination
Theory
(Edward Deci and
Richard Ryan 1995)
Self-Determination Theory
This refers to the individual's capacity to make decisions and to manage their own life
is referred to as self- determination. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) states that man is born
with an intrinsic motivation to explore, absorb and master his surroundings and that true high
self-esteem. When you are self-determined, you feel more in charge than when you are not,
which may make you feel as though other people are running your life. This is somehow
connected to self-esteem because it gains a distinct place in the social environment. In order to
achieve this status you must have self-determination. In this theory, the idea of intrinsic
motivation doing things for the inherent satisfaction of the action—plays a significant part. How
we see and regard ourselves is a measure of our self-esteem.(Edward Deci and Richard Ryan,
1985). It is founded on our perceptions of ourselves, which can be challenging to alter. Same as
the self-determination, they have three inborn and common psychological requirements that
drive humans to evolve and grow.
Social Cognitive Theory
Social cognitive theories of personality belief learning traits is a one way street
environment that affects the behavior of students. This theory somehow relates to a person’s self-
esteem, because of the level of physical attractiveness a person posses both their behavior and
the level of attraction they experienced from others. Social-cognitive theories of a personality
also emphasize our mental process and how we think that can impact our behavior. Our
expectations, memories, and schemes can all affect our behavior (Albert, Bandura 1991).
Self-Efficacy Theory
Self-Efficacy is the belief in one's ability to succeed in achieving an outcome or reaching
a goal. This belief, specific to a task or an area of knowledge or performance, shapes behaviors
and strategies that help a person pursue their goal. High self-efficacy reflects confidence in the
ability to control one's own motivation, behavior, and environment, and allows students to be
advocates for their own needs and support. it is also connected to personal beauty preference and
self-esteem because of a person's desire to achieve something they like and because they share
the same goal of increasing self-confidence (Bandura,1997)
