INTRODUCTION

Rationale

The transition from junior high to senior high school is an important phase in a

student’s academic career. Students must choose a specialized academic strand during

this phase that’s related with their future goals and job interests. Their entire high

school experience and education may be greatly influenced by this choice. It is crucial

for themselves to understand how students make this decision and the experiences that

follow within their chosen strand. The study will investigate senior high school students’

experiences with their chosen academic strands, highlighting the disadvantages and

advantages they face as well as providing insights into the ways in which these

experiences affect their academic performance and future professional. This pivotal

choice often influences their academic trajectory and career prospects

In the contemporary educational landscape, senior high school students in

various countries are faced with the crucial decision of selecting an academic strand or

track that aligns with their interests and career aspirations. Strand selection refers to the

process by which students choose an academic or vocational pathway in senior high.

Their education will be focused on either academic subjects, technical-vocational

training, sports, or the arts and design as a result of this decision. Their future jobs

options, skill development, and courses are all impacted by the chosen strand.
A accurate decision takes into consideration a person’s career goals, hobbies, and

resource availability. The process sets the foundation for a student’s future academic

and career opportunities.

Senior high school offers these academic strands: Academic, Technical-

Vocational-Livelihood (TVL), Sports, and Arts and Design. Each strand caters to different

interests and career aspirations, shaping students’ future paths. Choosing the right

strand is crucial as it lays the foundation for academic and professional goals. Students’

experiences within these strands can vary widely, influencing their engagement and

academic success. Ultimately, their choice impacts their long-term career satisfaction.

A student’s experience in their chosen strand is influenced by factors such as the

quality of education, available resources, and personal interests. TVL strands often

provide practical training and vocational skills that directly lead to job opportunities. In

contrast, academic strands offer rigorous coursework and preparation for higher

education. To fully understand these experiences, it is important to examine how

students perceive their curriculum, their interactions with peers and teachers, and how

their strand aligns with their career goals. These factors collectively shape their overall

educational experience and future prospects.

Different strands present unique advantages and challenges. Students in

academic strands may face significant academic pressure and high expectations.

Conversely, those in TVL strands might struggle with issues related to training facilities or

job placement opportunities. Despite these challenges, students can benefit from a
more focused education, enhanced skill sets, and clearer career paths. Analyzing these

factors helps identify areas needing support and improvement to enhance the overall

educational experience.

Understanding how these choices affect students’ academic performance,

personal growth, and career paths requires researching senior high school students’

experiences with their selected strand. It assists in identifying the difficulties students

encounter when their interests do not coincide with the strand they have chosen, as

well as the resources that help them have a positive experience. The results of this study

can help educators and decision-makers design career guidance programs that are more

successful and enhance the resources that are available for each strand. Furthermore, it

offers important knowledge into students’ mental and emotional health. Understanding

students’ experiences with their chosen strand is essential for educators, policymakers,

and stakeholders to enhance educational strategies and support mechanisms. This aim

to explore and analyze the experiences of senior high school students regarding their

selected strands, shedding light on their motivations, challenges, and perceived

outcomes.

It Is important to conduct additional study on senior high school students’

experiences with their selected strand in order to discover discrepancies in the quality

and accessibility of education among various paths. Teachers can better customize

assistance and instruction for students by knowing how their socioeconomic

circumstances, personal goals, and school resources influence their strand choices.

Interventions. Additionally, this study may reveal areas in which students lack the
necessary skills for further study or the workforce. Indicating the need for extra skill-

building opportunities or curriculum modifications. Additionally, investigating the

emotional and psychological experiences in regard to choosing strands can clarify the

the value of mental health services at educational institutions. Over time, this kind of

research aims to create a more welcoming and a framework for instruction that is

student-centered and supports academic and personal development outcomes.

Statement of the Problem:

This study aims to explore the experiences of senior high school students with

regard to their chosen academic strand. Despite the increasing emphasis on

personalized education pathways, there is limited understanding of how students

navigate and perceive their chosen strands and how these experiences impact their

academic performance, motivation, and future aspirations. The primary goals of this

study are to determine the critical elements affecting students’ contentment and

difficulties in their selected fields of study, as well as the best resources and support

networks for them.

This study seeks to address the following questions:

1. What is the level of academic performance of the:

1.1 male

1.2 female
1.3 as a whole

2. What challenges do students encounter in their chosen strands?

3 . How do students’ experiences with their chosen strand impact their overall

academic performance and personal development?

Significance of the Study

This research is significant for several reasons:

Educational Institutions as its finding will provide insights into how well current

academic strands meet students’ needs and expectations, informing curriculum

development and instructional strategies.

Teachers as they have crucial and and impressive roles in the processes of

teaching and learning, who spends long times in classrooms dealing with their students

Students by understanding common challenges and success factors, students can

make more informed decisions about their academic paths and seek appropriate

support.

Parents as the study helps parents better understand their children’s

experiences and provide more effective guidance.

Policymakers as the study offers evidence-based recommendations to enhance

educational policies and support systems for senior high school students.

Relevance – The degree to which students perceive their chosen strand as aligned with

their career goals and future aspirations.

behavior within their chosen strand. Next is the Theotrical background which shows

and provides theories and frameworks that support and guide the study. Review the

existing theories and models relevant to educational choices and student experiences.

This showcase and explain ideas from existing literature that are related and

applicable to the research topic.

Design

Students at Bankal Senior High School can have their experiences with their

selected strand explored and described using this study design. The objective is to

collect comprehensive data regarding their views, emotions, and actions concerning

their educational journey.

Environment

The Bankal Senior High School will serve as the setting for the research. This

environment gives the target students the access and context they need. Getting all

participants’ informed consent and protecting the privacy of their answers are two

factors that will be taken into account. Students will be given the option to withdraw

from the study at any moment, and participation will be entirely voluntary.

This design aims to provide a comprehensive qualitative exploration of students’

experiences with their chosen academic strands in Senior High School.

Respondents

All senior high school students enrolled at Bankal Senior High School will be the

target group for this study. Based on the population’s representativeness and feasibility,

the sampling strategy will be chosen.

Instrument and data gathering

The main instrument in gathering data will be a questionnaire. To collect data,

the questionnaire will include both closed-ended and open-ended questions. The

purpose of the questions is to learn more about the students’ opinions, experiences,

and level of satisfaction with the strand they have chosen. The chosen sample of

students will be given the questionnaire.

The researcher may think about applying paper-based questionnaires or internet

surveys to guarantee high response rates. For analysis, the gathered data will be

arranged and coded.
