OA stands for Other Alternatives I've heard it said by a very wise member of our fellowship that OA stands, also, for Other Alternatives. The surrender and inventory steps (1 through 6), if worked earnestly and in depth, show me what attitudes and actions are causing me problems and getting in the way of my recovery. I've become willing to change, only to be told in no uncertain terms that I can't change myself by myself. Like the brain surgeon who needs brain surgery, I'm going to need outside help. I can't change if I don't see any other way to think and act. I need to visualize myself differently. I need role models, mentors, even the wisdom of the OA group to show me the new, improved me. And I need to be willing to look, listen, and learn. Then I need to practice, practice, practice. As I visualize a new way of acting, then practice it, my thinking begins to change to fit my new behavior. As the thinking changes, the new behavior becomes more and more right, more and more "me." Instead of fearing the changes, I begin to embrace them. When I fall back into the old behavior or thought pattern, it doesn't feel so comfortable any more. And so, I choose the new me. I have found that my Higher Power is everywhere in this process, providing the role models, mentors, and an OA support group, inspiring new ideas, guiding me through love with love to love. This "action plan" takes willingness and work on my part, but pays massive dividends. After years in program, I'm just now learning how to do it. God willing, I will keep on learning and growing for years to come. Gratefully abstaining, Sally

"Often we will be shown actions which we are to take as each defect is being removed. For instance, we may visualize ourselves as the people we will be when we no longer have each particular defect. How will we think and act? We may find it helpful to rehearse what we'll say and do when tempted to act in the old self-destructive ways."
