SOLAS: Retrofit of Insulations Cus 211 • 03/05

Engine type: 32/40, 40/54, 48/60 and 58/64
=

Reason As from 1. July 2003, all engines with an output of over 375 kW have to be
retrofitted with insulations according to the SOLAS convention. This
insulation must, in the long term, comply with the legal requirements of the
SOLAS Chapter II provisions with regard to insulation effect, resistance to
inflammability and fluid density.

We have reason to inform you that most of the insulation materials available
on the market today do not comply reliably with the above-mentioned
demands.

Therefore such subsequently fitted insulation does not, or not permanently,

fulfil the legal requirements, in particular, the SOLAS guidelines, with regard
to insulating effect, resistance to inflammability and fluid liquid sealing.
Should this be the case, a certain safety risk may exist.

Attention We would therefore expressly point out that a SOLAS compliant retrofit of
our engines requires the exclusive utilisation of original MAN B&W retrofit
solutions.

Based on their special design, these insulations assure compliance with the
legal SOLAS requirements.

Additional information In order to ensure the suitability of the insulation supplied by us, we carefully
examined engine insulation after an operating time of 6 276 hours.
The result of this examination proved that there were neither abrasive spots
nor spots soaked with fluid (see the attached photos).

We would be pleased to submit an offer for the retrofitting of the insulation to

you.
