THE HUMAN BODY

The Locomotor System: bones, joints and muscles

Types of bones:
1) Short bones: support and stability
scaphoid, lunate, triquetral, hamate, pisiform, capitate, trapezoid, and trapezium
2) Flat bones: protect our organs
occipital, parietal, frontal, nasal, lacrimal
3) Long bones: used for movement
Femur,Fibula,Humerus,Tibia,Metacarpal
bones,Metatarsals,Phalanx bone,Ulna
Make a list and provide at least 3 examples of each type.
Joints
Types of joints:
1) Fixed joints: they do not move
2) Semi-flexible joints: allow a little movement
3) Fexible joints: allow our body to move
Ligaments: strong, elastic bands of tissue connect
bones and joints.
Cartilages protect the ends of these bones.

Fracture is a broken bone. How many joints can you think of? Please, name them.

Sprain is when we tear a ligament.

Muscles
Types of muscles:
1) Voluntary muscles: controlled by our brain.
2) Involuntary muscles: they move automatically.

Nervous System receives info from the 5 senses, controls our organs and body systems (circulatory system, respiratory…) it can produce reflex actions.

Central Nervous system: BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD

Brain:
1) Cerebrum: biggest part which controls voluntary movements.
2)Cerebellum controls balance, movement and coordination.
3) Brain Stem: controls involuntary movement. It connects the brain and spinal cord which is protected the vertebrae and
controls reflex actions.

Peripheral Nervous Sytem:

Made up of nerve cells called neurons which travel to and from the brain.
