Skeptics maintain that globalization is not really a global phenomenon; they believe that globalization
is a theory (24) masks the fact that the international economy is being dominated by three
3
economic power centers: Europe, North America, and Asia Pacific. Using global trade patterns from the
early 20th century compared to now, some skeptics believe that global trade has not changed very
much at all (Hirst and Thompson, Globalization in Question). (25) , unlike hyperglobalizers,
governments are not seen as the victims of globalization; they are not passive and still have
considerable power over the global market. An example can be seen with the Eurozone debt crisis and
Germany’s dominating influence, where the governments had to (26) pivotal decisions that could
alter the economies of many countries, such as Greece.
In terms of cultural globalization, skeptics believe that it is (27) form of Western
propaganda aimed at spreading their views and (28) their hegemony. Evidence for this
can be seen by looking at patterns in global trade. 85% of world trade is still between developed
countries, and they are able to maintain this economic hegemony through TNCs, but governments still
have key roles in determining the location of global investment.

During the 20th century, immigration into Britain encouraged the development of diverse
cultural experiences and understanding within society. Cultural integration brought music, literature,
art, food and fashion from different parts of the world, particularly from places that had been part of
the British Empire and then the Commonwealth – and it also impacted things like business and sport.
An example of cultural integration in British society was the introduction of ska and reggae
music from Jamaica in the Caribbean. This was a major achievement of Chris Blackwell, who founded a
recording company called Island Records in 1958 in Jamaica. In 1962 he returned to England and
Island Records became more and more successful. In the 1970s he brought Bob Marley and his music
to Britain.
There was also a greater appreciation of the history and philosophy of other societies around
the globe during the 20th century. Originally there was an interest in these diverse cultures so that
Britain could rule them more effectively within the Empire. In the later 20th century the motives
changed and many British people realised the benefits of developing a multicultural society that would
broaden the experience and meaning of being British. The identities of migrants who came from the
West Indies, Africa and Asia were more complex and the notions of being black British and Asian
British developed in the late 20th century.
However, the development of a tolerant multicultural Britain has had its opponents. There has
been racism in society that has led to open opposition to immigration and also more covert
discrimination against black and Asian people. This racism was gradually brought under the control of
British laws when the 1965 Race Relations Act made racial discrimination illegal. However, the
achievement of racial equality remains a challenge even in the 21st century.

International trade is the activity of buying, selling and exchanging goods and services between
countries. In the twenty-first century, industrialization, modern transportation, multinational
corporations and outsourcing are all having a major impact on the international trade system.
Increasing international trade powers the continued growth of globalization. Food is one
commodity that is traded worldwide. In Longsheng, China, rice farmers have worked in these rice
paddies for almost 800 years. The rice they grow feeds people all over the world.
Countries trade produce with each other to sell what they grow in excess and they buy
commodities that are cheaper elsewhere, or that they cannot produce themselves. France, for example,
is only the 43rd largest country in the world, but it is the world’s second-largest exporter of agricultural
products, selling wheat, dairy and meat products to countries worldwide.
Competition is fierce between countries to gain a competitive advantage in the international
trade market and to get a good price for their produce. In Australia, goods are transported far across
the country by road and worldwide by ship. Australian farmers export around 60% of what they
produce, earning the country more than 30 billion Australian dollars per year. The transport involved
in international trade can, however, have massive effects on pollution and the environment.
International trade can also make countries more economically reliant on non-domestic trade
for the production, processing and purchase of goods. These Mexican prickly pear farmers rely on
selling their products in specialist food shops across the world. However, this export business has
brought money – and hope – to an entire community, by creating jobs. Without international trade,
nations would be limited to the goods and services within their own borders. So, the food produced
here wouldn’t end up on a plate.
